Seventy Christians have been found beheaded in a church in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in what’s the latest devastating attack on believers in the north east of the country.

According to field sources, at around 4am last Thursday (13 February) suspected militants from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – a group with ties to so-called Islamic State (IS) – approached homes in Mayba in the territory of Lubero, saying: “Get out, get out and don’t make any noise.” Twenty Christian men and women came out and were captured.

Shaken by this incident, people from the local community in Mayba later gathered to work out how to release those held captive. However, ADF militants surrounded the village and captured a further 50 believers.

“We don’t know what to do or how to pray; we’ve had enough of massacres”

All 70 of those kidnapped were taken to a Protestant church in Kasanga where they were tragically killed.

Muhindo Musunzi, director of the Kombo primary school [which belongs to the CECA20 church], says that prior to this incident, churches, schools and health centres had all shut their doors because of the chaotic security situation. “We had to move all activities towards Vunying,” he said.

Field sources report that, until yesterday (Tuesday 18 February), some families had not been able to bury their dead because of insecurity in the area. Many Christians have now fled the area for their safety.

“We don’t know what to do or how to pray; we’ve had enough of massacres,” says an elder of the CECA20 church. “May God’s will alone be done.”

Why has persecution increased in DRC?
Rise in violence and internal displacement
This latest awful incident is a continuation of the escalating threat posed by ADF militants in the country’s north east region. In 2014, the group intensified attacks in Beni territory in North Kivu province, and since then attacks have spread to the territories of Irumu and Mambasa in Ituri province, and now it’s affecting Lubero. In the last month alone, the group have killed more than 200 people in Baswagha chiefdom, according to a local news website.

This explains why DRC rose six places to number 35 in the latest World Watch List. Last year, 355 were killed for their faith, compared with 261 the previous year, whilst an estimated 10,000 were internally displaced, which is ten times more than 2023. Houses have been looted and burnt, schools relocated, churches and health facilities closed, and several Christian villages have been abandoned altogether. The recent activities of the M23 rebel group, reportedly ed by Rwanda, has added to the vulnerability of Christians.

A call to remain in prayer
“Open Doors strongly condemns this heinous act of violence against civilians and calls upon civil societies, governments and international organisations to prioritise civilian protection in eastern DRC where armed groups, such as the ADF, are operating,” says John Samuel*, Open Doors’ legal expert for the work in sub-Saharan Africa.

“The violence takes place in a context of impunity, where almost no one is held able,” he continues. “This massacre is a clear indicator of widespread human rights violations against civilians and vulnerable communities, often targeting Christians, perpetrated by ADF – a [so-called Islamic State] .”

“We further call on the international Christian community to remain in prayer for Christians and vulnerable communities in eastern DRC,” adds John Samuel. “Pray for an end to violence and that government at all levels will diligently, impartially, and transparently address the violence and its effects. Pray for the church in Lumbero as she seeks to bring physical and spiritual assistance to the families affected.”

That God’s comfort will engulf all those grieving and traumatised by this incident, and that Christians in the area affected by persecution will be strengthened in their faith in Jesus
For the Lord to intervene in bringing a halt to these attacks, and for national and international governments, organisation and security forces to do more to provide security and justice in the region
That the Holy Spirit will soften the hearts of ADF militants, leading them to Jesus, and that all their plans will be thwarted.

ARISE AFRICA PETITION

Christian leaders across sub-Saharan Africa are calling on the global church to stand with them against violent persecution.

This happened just a few days ago. And since then? Nothing. No one’s even talking about how Christians are being targeted all over Africa.

Christians can get slaughtered in huge numbers by Islamist terror groups, and everyone just moves on like it’s no big deal. But the second you go after these terrorists, suddenly you’re the one being accused of genocide.

You’ve got to stand up to these monsters because, sooner or later, they’ll try to bring their chaos to you. Why is a group tied to Islamist terrorists/group out there beheading Christians in Congo?
What’s the endgame here? 🤷🏼

RIP to the dead. At the end of the day, it pains me that Africa will either be totally Christianized or Islamized. These two foreign monstrous religions have a history of killing and forcing people into accepting their religions. In their ugly fight to forcefully convert all Africans into their religions, I'd say let the most violent religion win. I will not take sides neither will I condemn any of these deadly religions for killing each other as both religions favour conversion by sword.

African Christians think christianity never carried out "holy wars" . They only know about Jihad, the Islamic holy war. If the world were a sane place Christianity and Islam would have been banned for life.
Even the holy wars of the bible especially Numbers 31 are evidence of the killing nature of Christianity.

The funny thing is that muslims don't know that they are at the mercy of Christians strict adherence to the conscience of the scriptures.

The day Christians rise to react, that day, they will discover that islam can be wiped out or relegated to the slums of the dark part of the earth.

Vile monsters. That is what muslims are.

I am a Christian but I will never trade my life for a mere illusionary forgiveness

If you first attack me, I will defend myself with any weapon I can lay my hands on even if it is a kitchen knife, I will st@b my attacker and even if he kill me, I will die knowing fully well I tried to save my soul from monsters...

Out of 70 Christians, they didn't even kill one Islamic Jihadist? Christians can do better when they start responding like their Muslim counterpart....

One day, we'll all agree there is peace for the wicked, but no peace for the weak.

The idea of going to Heaven and never attempting reprisal when you're hurt, but leave the fight for God is orchestrated by the white to weaken the Africans who'll believe in it and strengthen Africans who won't.

These are both humans. The difference is orientation. One believes in conquering and by any means possible and the other believes in leaving things to God and acting peaceful.

All I know is, being too peaceful in a deadly world is weakness and you'll pay the price.

Even in marriage or relationship, do you see how women easily dump the peaceful men? Kaka, the footballer, Pep Guardiola, the coach, etc. These men are seen as weak, even though they probably aren't. The only crime is: They're too obsessed with their careers just the same way Christians are too obsessed with forgiving wicked people so they can make Heaven, which may not even exist in the end.

I pray it does. Christians have been through a lot and realizing in the end that Heaven or Hell doesn't exist will cause a meltdown. I pray it REALLY does.

RIP to the dead.

Islamists. Wow!
You just echoed the kind of rhetoric a typical Islamist propagandist would use to deflect and conceal their harmful agenda. This attack was carried out by Muslim groups who are driven by their interpretation of their religious books. Why is it that, according to you, the U.S. is only capable of sponsoring Islamists to kill in the name of their god??

Don’t you see this as an ideological issue? Instead of accepting the fact that Islamist terrorists are despicable extremists, you keep pointing fingers at the U.S. Isn’t it time to confront the reality of the problem? 🤷🏼😂😂
