There are people that just prefer eating local chicken. I know it sounds odd cos of how skinny they look, but there are people out there that prefer local chicken. If you know surulere well in lagos, at the beginning of Adeniran Ogunsaya street, there is someone that sells local chickens there. This is an area with middle class to high class people...so for that spot to be there it means there is a market for them.
There are people who buy for sacrifice This is odd too, but "ibile" chicken (local chicken) is really sort after by some people.
There are also people that eat eggs from local chicken...they believe it is the most nutritious and healthy type of egg, cos the chickens don't eat commercialised feed filled with chemicals.
Local chickens are more delicious than the broilers.
beejayodus:
Dem dey use dem do sacrifice. If he carry those fowls come Itoko for Abeokuta, those ni eku, ni eja people go buy everything, including the eggs!

This is the second hen with her 4 chicks and the main rooster, the leader of the pack.
By the way, this is a rare shut of the hen with her 4 chicks, cos after 6 weeks, she started chasing them away to go.fend for themselves and started following the main rooster around. Now she has laid 5 eggs so far...when she gets to 10 or 12, she will start the 21 day process again.
these pictures in the main post, then notify the mods to take it to the front page for better audience.
This is good content.

How do you manage their excrement messing the whole place up, especially where they roost ?
Can local chickens be kept in cages intensively?
Their excrement is very small compared to broilers...and they're on dirt ground, not concrete floor, so the excrement usually blends with the earth/soil. It's not noticeable at all.
About keeping them in cages, that defeats the purpose of having local chickens. They're meant to fend for themselves majority of the time to reduce cost of feeding.
Locals? it's a sure way to go if all the right indices are put in place; secured fenced compound with lots of space, predator free, and good moderate home for them etc. Moreover, with the introduction of Cockerels or Noilers to help improve their flock, you are most likely on the right track. You could even help raise the newly hatched chicks for at least 2 weeks before releasing them with the mother hen. That's what I do to my ducklings when I still had them in numbers; I do a month with them before releasing them outside.
Make I sidon here dey watch your progress and if you by chance happen to have pure black native chicken without blemish, abeg I will be interested to buy.

Pure black local hen? Hmm...interesting.
How do you handle heat source when you take the chicks away from their mothers? And do the mothers gladly accept the chicks back when you return them?

Oh...I think I left that part out. Often times, I move them with the mother hen into seclusion. Same applies to the ducks.
Nevertheless, I don't think I when last I deliberately added extra heat source to my brooder room when raising birds, room temperature is just fine by me. Not even with the way Naija hot like this...
Yes!!!! Blaaaaaack hen.
It fetches moooore money. Black chicken, black cats, black goats, black ducks, everything gives prices. Same applies to pure white.
kay29000:
I started in the poultry business back in 2016. i have been in and out of the business because of rising cost of chicken feed, but I love the business so much I keep going back to it. I have two spots I raise birds at; my poultry (outskirts of Ibadan), and my parents house in Lagos. Last February, after selling off most of my birds at my parents house, my mom suggested I try out local chickens instead. I felt they took too long to grow, and they don't have enough meat on their bones. But she told me there was a market for them, and they were less stressful, as we had a big abandoned garden in the compound they could forage around. When I was still reluctant, she went ahead and bought the first batch with her money, and asked me to help take care of them.
So, in February 2024, she bought a mature local hen. After watching it for a few weeks and understanding its daily routine, we bought two more local chickens.
May God bless mummy in good health and wealth. Amen
Selling them. Although they're not as expensive as broilers, they still are good business, cos the feeding is very very minimal. An adult local hen goes for about 6k.
Right now, i'm focusing on getting their population up to like 70, then I can sell off like 50 at once. Their population is currently at 6 adults, and 7 chicks. That's 13. By the end of the month, i'm expecting at least 17 chicks from the 22 eggs on ground. That would bring their total population to 30 by month end. They increase in sort of like a geometric progression. It's really incredible to watch.
I like your initiative. You already got your process mapped out. I and many others are learning sir. Please no vex o. We go dey ask questions and some suggestions too.

Interesting. I have an idea why they have higher value.

Babalawo wetin u wan use pure black fowl do. Am working on something this weekend. U have to create a separate area for the newly hatched chicks. Let's say u have 10 hen. All u need is a paint rubber as the mini home. Naturally they will go there and lay their eggs instead of laying around. One you have protected them from those wild animals. Have atleast 3 transfer cage. The mother will only be with them 2 weeks after which they stay on their own. Another two weeks in the cage before setting them free.
If u arrange the cage well the bird hatch 15. Max u lose 2. You can create cockroach box, black soldier larvae box and earthworm spot for your birds. This will be create extra nutrients for them as they look for food around.

If you were to buy a local cat (kitten), you will probably get one within the range of 3k to 7k. On the other hand, a pure black kitten goes for around 20k to 30k. Likewise, getting a local chicken (a matured Rooster) in the market right is about 9k walahi, but getting either a pure white local fowl or cock will rough go for 15k to 20k. Same applies to the pure blacks.
Let me now proceed further, do you even know local eggs are more expensive? One local egg can be sold for as much as 500naira
It's all business at the end of the day.
So once again, @kay29000, if you happen to be in possession of a pure black native fowl, could you pls sell to me.
Note: Purely native ooo...I don't want any which blood as been tainted along the line with Noilers, cockerels or broilers ooo.

That their shit everywhere is a deal breaker for me, no matter how small. Also, how can they fully fend for themselves inside compound/street? Except they're ranging into forest where there is abundant insects etc.
I thought their major advantage is their hardiness against disease. If they can be caged then it will make sense. Their droppings can even be packed as manure.

As I said, they're on an abandoned garden...lots of insects to feast on. Yeah, their hardiness is an advantage, but also the fact that they can fend for themselves. I feed them when I wake up in the morning, around 6:30 am.with guinea corn...and maybe in the evening. But it can't be compared to the feeding of my noilers at all.
If you want to cage them, you can go ahead and experiment with that, but personally, I would never do that. It just defeats the purpose of keeping local chickens to me.

Do you grind the guinea corn or you feed it to them whole?
Check out this video below. You might want to try it.
I don't know if it applies to local chickens though.
