The Department of State Services (DSS) has clarified its involvement in the security takeover of the Lagos State House of Assembly, stating that its presence was requested by the Assembly itself.

In a statement on Monday, the DSS explained that it acted on a letter from the Assembly dated February 14, 2025, which sought additional security due to potential threats.

The letter, signed by Acting Clerk Mr. A.T.B. Ottun, cited credible intelligence suggesting plans to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker on February 18, 2025.

In a copy of the letter dated 14th February, 2025, sighted by Daily Trust, the Assembly management told Security Agencies in Lagos that there was credible information that plans were afoot to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker of the State Assembly on 18th February, 2025.

The letter seen by our correspondent was sent to the DSS Director in the State, as well as the heads of other security agencies in Lagos.

Entitled URGENT: ENHANCED SECURITY MEASURES FOR LSHA PREMISES

the Acting Clerk wrote: “I wish to bring to your attention a pressing matter that requires immediate action.

“The impeached Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume to office on the 18th of February, 2025, as the Speaker, posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its .

“In light of this situation,” continued the Clerk, “we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday 16* February, 2025 by increasing the presence of your Men and as well observe a strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises till further notice. We look forward to your prompt attention Sir. Thank you.”

DSS Assures Public Of Neutrality

The DSS noted that its deployment was to ensure order and protect Assembly , emphasizing that its actions were based on the lawmakers’ request and not driven by external influence.

This development follows days of tension at the Assembly, where legislative workers clashed with security personnel amid the ongoing leadership tussle between Speaker Mojisola Meranda and impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

The DSS reiterated its commitment to upholding security and order without bias.

President Tinubu demands an unreserved apology from those that have been dragging his name into this issue disrespectfully. Mr President is currently in Ethiopia for AU meeting while many ignorant folks are linking him to what's going on back home. Apparently, it was even the acting clerk of the Lagos Assembly who officially wrote to the DSS to come beef up security at the venue to prevent Obasa from gaining entrance into the building. God bless President Tinubu, God bless Nigeria.

Since the beginning of this issue, the President has maintained a dignified silence, the President doesn't involve himself in state's matters unnecessarily. Why must you think that everything that happens must come from the President?. Does his spokesmen issue statements on River state's crisis or Kano State's Emirate crisis?. Why must they issue any statement concerning Lagos?. The President is not a talkative, the GAC are the ones in charge. If anyone has to talk, it would be the GAC.

Am I kissing a lie before... Lagos is the Political base of the King of Burdillion and he calls the shots, so it is only natural for every action and inaction to be attributed to him .. the GAC are just an advisory group for the purpose of fairness and other view point, they are not in charge of anything.

If they were certain about viewing the leaked memo, an image of the document with the Lagos House of Assembly signed letterhead would have been more credible than using bolded fonts to push a narrative.

You can blame daily trust for that because the hardcopy is everywhere.

Nigerian security agencies behave like dunces and morons. If they had received an invitation to the complex, would it not have made more sense to secure the premises while at the same time, allow the proceedings at the assembly go on unimpeded?

Secondly, isn't the DSS supposed to be the one providing the clerk of the house with Intel regarding any threat instead of the other way round? And having established that reports of such threats are credible, isn't it the right thing to do to invite for questioning or place under surveillance anyone who is suspected of intending to disrupt the business of the Lagos house of assembly?

If earlier reports are true that the speaker was not informed as to why the complex was sealed off, aren't there DSS agents attached to the speaker? Are they ignorant of their organizations directives as well?

If the agents behind the threat to distabilise the assembly are not identified and sanctioned, how long will the complex remain locked down? Will it keep being locked up anytime reports of possible disruptions arise?

A competent organisation would have handled the matter better instead of this mess that has created uncertainty and left eggs on the face of the president.
