The other day I was talking to mama. Mama is an elederly woman that sells bread on a table by the side of the only market in the rural area. In the process of our conversation she remarked "what is 500k? I made sales of 1.4 million last December". And this is me, holding a degree from a first generation University in engineering earning 160k after 6 years in the company. It dawned on me that I should have opted for the business track right from my undergrad days. Most white collar jobs in Nigeria are a waste of time and talent.

Na now you know? I worked as a manager to a businessman for over 8 years, my highest salary was 100k. Meanwhile, 2 apprentice boys who started learning trade for 5 years got their freedom, and their boss opened new shops for them. Both are using GL and the other Lexus with houses both in the cities and in their villages. Even my babe then, whom I invested 200k in setting up a business, is worth over 18M now. If I hadn't quit that job, maybe by now, I would have been their gateman. If I'm not learning or gaining experience with the job, or it is not a government job, if you like pay 600k per month, I NO work.

Abeg which type of business did you invest 200k for your babe that has turned into 18 million, and what kind of trade did those guys learn? Knowledge is power.

I just stopped my 9-5 this Month to focus on God, Family and Farming.

No regrets, I just know the future is bright once I get things right with God, Family and Farming.

This is both courageous and inspiring. With God you can never go wrong. And yes, family comes before any job. Cheers

Why do you think it applies only to Nigeria?

Besides, your 9-5 job should be just an avenue for you to get seed money for investments, 9 - 5 shouldn't be your sole way of getting income.

Female clothes, the boys were selling engine parts. But that was around 2012/2013 oh!!, 200k can't even pay for a shop currently.

9-5 get levels.. don't use your situation to generalize. You no ask mama how long she has been in the business.

And what is the certainty that you would make it with business. There are more failed businesses than successful ones, but nobody will come out to it it.

On your own case, you were likely not well informed which made you complacent.

Fresh graduate trainees in banking industry earn nothing less than 300k, and not less than 200k six years ago except for a few.

Please travel the lands, network with people, LinkedIn, Twitter. You need motivation to move away from that job keeping you hostage.

That's okay...Go through job sites. Unfortunately, most of the jobs that would pay you well are in Lagos, so you might want to consider that as well.
