visaclick: Interestingly, I came across this post on Twitter this morning and read through some of the comments. While many people offered constructive , others went above and beyond by providing practical solutions. It’s worth noting that solar technology has advanced significantly there are even solar-powered electric vehicles now. It seems like your perspective may be rooted in past negative experiences, which could be holding you back from exploring better alternatives or opportunities for resolution. 3 Likes |

fxtree: If what your resident engineer said about the in-stitu soil is correct, I will advise that you follow the advise of your resident engineer over the structural engineer ( Especially if the structural design was done without a soil report ) These and more are the reasons why it's not advisable to fill foundation with laterite in place like lekki, The soil will behave as plastic Soil test is also very important when dealing with soils like that. TeamLeader:First of all There are two types of foundation beams One is plinth beam, the other tie beam A plinth beam is the one placed on the ground and foundation blocks laid on it and primarily it distributes loads from walls and columns onto the foundation, preventing differential settlement and cracks. while a tie beam resists lateral forces and helps maintain the alignment of the structure by connecting columns. For your instance I guess you are talking about tie beam This is why and when you should consider tie beam When you have a high foundation wall, it becomes necessary that you introduce a tie beam. It helps to break the length of your walls and colomns (imagine having to build 17 course from foundation to lintel, shearing might occur at the waist. It also helps tie all your columns together making them act and settle uniformly. I am not able to attach an image but You can check out a typical example of a tie beam on our design and build project https://nairaland.unblockandhide.com/6781323/construction-droyal-apartments-charisdesigns |

I am at screeding level for my project and will like some expert inputs. I am thinking of using cement screed both internal and external. Also, please can experts comment on material quantity for 800 sqm internal and 1000 sqm exterior. I will like your advise on how many buckets (20L) of screed paint, normal cement and top bond I should budget to use. Thank you for your help. |

gbadexy: I honestly try to avoid this solar discussion but something in me won't allow it..The truth is, you guys should not downplay people's experience.. Alot of people had a very very bad experience with solar, after spending millions. My company had over 150 branch in Nig and we had solar in atleast a 100 outlet, my brother, what I notice is that everything usually work well for the first 3 to 6 month and after that na one story upon one story..We have changed vendor atleast thrice...What do we need to power? Just one AC, one Desktop, then some few POP bulb and maybe a fan, and two or 3 phones for staff that will want to charge their phone. I was reviewing some invoices recently and I notice we have spent over 250 million within 2023 till date on this venture. As at today, 80% of those solar in their respective branches are either not working at all or will give you less that 2 hour even if it's 100% charged...what we do now is to prevent our CEO from getting those info because how do we explain to her that all the solar that we spent hugely on is not working! It is ONLY here that I hear that solar is very GOOD, the experience OUTSIDE is opposite. It's okay if we need to sell our market tho. I have ed a popular solar installer here, am planning to do an audit of all the job they did for us...Approval is what is delaying us from proceeding, everyone is scared to tell madam that her 250M don enter voicemail, quite painful because we sold the idea to her, now going back to tell her stories again 5 Likes |

dapotemi: My point is this, I am not saying solar is not good o, if you have good experience with it, then I'll consider you one of the few lucky ones. From my experience and that of those around me, the ratio is 20 bad review to one good review...We need to bridge that gap if solar is actually good.. 100% of my acquaintance now uses their solar to just power their FAN to have a good night sleep...Imagine spending 5 million on solar and after one year I ask you how far and the response is na only fan and bulb I dey use am power now o...You will see the frustration on their faces.... 2 Likes |

dapotemi: solar works, however being unregulated, too many quacks jumped into it in nigeria, who have no idea of the physics behind solar/inverter, thus ruining the experience for many people.... here is a thread where we discuss solar DIY ish. ----- https://nairaland.unblockandhide.com/390522/solar-energy-complement-fta/1897 also a link of a member who has powered an 80 room hotel with solar, and even a church headquarters... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g1lyp8y28A i would advice you to engage a reputable hand or post the system design of your proposed installer on the solarforum page so we can anlyse&critique it. a good solar setup is expensive, but pays for itself after 2 to 3 yrs, depending on the size, and what is the norm in nigeria is for the client to collect quotes from 2 to 5 vendors...and then settle for the cheapest quote without understanding the nuances behind the quote 1 Like |

dapotemi:To be candid, it's more beneficial during the day with good sunlight and sufficient solar s. The major challenge as regards my experience is the use in the evening. The battery would have to be much. I would have changed batteries in the first couple year and double the battery size to use it reasonably at night as the capacity was dropping if we didn't switch to using 10 watts standing fan that works like regular fan and we use led bulb but the freezer would have to be off by 3 pm. I think it's more suited for day time use with appropriate inverter and solar capacity covering all the expected appliances. |

earthrealm:It sure pays for itself. I was connected back to phcn a few years ago to use alternatively during raining season and the first few months phcn guys came to investigate us that we weren't recharging on their system. I think I'm just recharging the second time since then and it wasn't even necessary as my wife said we still had sufficient units. I load 20k. They were bringing estimated bill of 90k monthly before then. The only future expenses is battery as the other parts of the system doesn't need replacement, at least not for over a decade ideally. |

gbadexy: A decent lithium battery can easily do 12yrs...however most installer recommend tubular battery, even the few that somewhat recommend lithium battery , a gew of them sometimes run into problems as they dont understand the physics...and fail to programme the inverter to work adequately with lithium battery... Lithium battery is the game changer in solar installations 1 Like |

kopell: He should go to iponri market in surulere lagos. That market is solely powered by solar. I mean the tailors there. They use industrial sewing machines and 1000w electric iron. And no issues. Except anyday of heavy rainfall and cloudy sky. The secret is getting the right products. For the battery liFePO4 is best advised. Avoid buying from alaba if you not know the vendor. Go to any fouani showroom, they stock jinko s, growatt, huawei inverters and liFePO4 batteries . The problem is being sold fake or substandard solar energy products 1 Like |

dapotemi:exactly what i meant thank goodness you just dropped another real life experience and its even annoying that these solar thieves will still stand on their lies that solar is good when in real life i have seen people spend over 15m on solar and still regrets it. Solar installers are like pastors, they keep recommending solutions that will have you throw in more money. The same installer that got the tube whatever batteries is now recommending lithium, then from lithium they come up with another recommendation of more s, from there they tell you the inverter isn’t powerful enough and these are where they eat more money while the costumer gets nothing in return. Who cares to power a bulb, what can a bulb do, can it pump water or power an ac ? Sometimes last year this topic came up and over 6 of them bombed my WhatsApp telling me that i am spoiling business for them, thats how low they have become. Theres a building close to mind with over 6s and yet at night the bulb is so dim and blinking, i guess they need up to 12s then. 1 Like |

visaclick:Any competent technician should know the capacity of inverter, batteries and solar s to recommend depending on the load you intend to power it from the start. There are grades of solar . There are mono and poly types also. I did some research to guide getting the right ones from the dealer. You are very correct though that some vendors have this habit of reaching out to people with contrary opinion that may affect their business while maintaining courtesy here. Mostly it's explaining there own side and trying to win over in my experience but I think everything should be done openly with clear mind. |

dapotemi: I completely understand your frustration, and I appreciate your honesty in sharing this experience. It’s disheartening to hear about the challenges you’ve faced, especially after such a significant investment. Unfortunately, experiences like this often stem from system design not matching the intended load, poor quality components, or a lack of proper maintenance plans. The major issue here could be related to adherence to the project charter, which typically outlines the specific equipment and appliances the solar system is designed to power. Once this charter is followed strictly, there should be no cause for alarm. For a system designed to handle one AC, a desktop, POP bulbs, a fan, and a few charging devices, consistent performance is achievable with proper design and implementation. Additionally, with the advancements in lithium battery technology, the era of replacing batteries every year is over. These batteries are designed for durability and long-term performance, provided they are used and maintained correctly. The widespread issues you’re facing across multiple outlets suggest a need for a comprehensive audit, which you’ve rightly planned to conduct. Your decision to investigate and identify the root cause is a critical step forward. Solar is indeed a reliable solution when systems are built to specification, maintained regularly, and aligned with the project charter. Stop relying on ants or individuals who lack understanding of the engineering field. Many installers cannot produce or interpret proper engineering designs, yet projects are often handed over to those without the necessary technical expertise. Nowadays, everyone claims to be an engineer, but when asked to provide their academic credentials, they often shy away 1 Like |

visaclick: Let me clarify a few points. First, majority of solar products from Alaba International are substandard and often counterfeit—around 95% of them. Many customers and installers prefer Alaba due to the lower costs, but they tend to avoid purchasing directly from manufacturers because their prices are significantly higher. For many people, solar has become a source of livelihood, which is why you’ll often see individuals offering one-day training sessions and walking away with certificates. Within a week, they’ll claim to be professional installers. Secondly, in 2023, Bill Gates visited a solar company in Nigeria. If renewable energy solutions were truly ineffective or if the company lacked expertise, it’s highly unlikely someone of Bill Gates' stature would have shown interest. This alone speaks volumes about the potential of the industry in the country. |

gbadexy:look at another problem right here, same lithium batteries that is said to be be the only thing that will make your solar power every appliance is what this balloon clown below on TikTok claims he can build up. This is how they go around wasting costumers money for their own gains and delivers nothing. Pov: spot the comment asking of what can power her borehole, nah cry dey load for her.
