Striking resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have challenged FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Senate President Godswill Akpabio to use government hospitals in the nation’s capital to feel the plight of public health workers and patients.

“If we are ready to fix the healthcare system in this country, I would think that every government official must use the government hospitals. Let’s start with that,” George Ebong said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday.

I would like to see the minister use Wuse General Hospital. I would like to see the Senate President use Maitama General Hospital. I would like to see the Speaker use Iyanya General Hospital. Then, we can start to fix the system. If they don’t use it, then we can’t fix it. I’m sorry but that’s the truth.”

The doctors began a three-day warning strike on Wednesday over unpaid salaries, and allowances, among others after the expiration of a three-week ultimatum issued earlier. The development grounded activities at government hospitals in Abuja from Wuse to Asokoro, Maitama, Kubwa, Zuba, Kwali, Abaji, Nyanya, and others.

Ebong, the President of resident doctors in the FCT, accused Wike and other government officials of neglecting health facilities and workers’ welfare in Abuja.

He said though Wike has been busy fixing roads, he has abandoned health institutions in the nation’s capital with many in deplorable condition.

“That’s just where we have our concerns. The minister has been very busy with projects, fixing roads, and all of that. We feel that he should also focus on the hospitals right now.

“We feel that we are the human abandoned project. No matter the things he does by fixing roads and bridges, the hospitals are the very first point of innovation and rehabilitation. They are hallowed ground; he cannot neglect them,” he said.

Ebong said, “For example, we don’t have electricity, sometimes you can’t run some tests over the weekend, we don’t have drugs, we don’t have scan machines working, and we don’t have enough manpower.” He said only one doctor man some hospitals in Abuja.

Ebong said many doctors have not been paid their six months’ salaries despite working assiduously and taking on the responsibilities of four or more persons.

“When he (Wike) first became the minister that was the only time we’ve met him but we’ve met everyone that works under him. We’ve sent him a series of letters and I am sure he is aware,” Ebong said.

He blamed the so-called bottlenecks in the system that have not allowed things to be done properly.

“I urge the minister to please try to ensure that all the wages are paid. I urge the minister to please visit all the ministers and see the state in which the hospitals are at the moment,” he said.

Ebong said the association would reassess the situation after the warning strike and if the congress felt nothing was done, “the congress will not have a choice than to go on a timeless shut down”.

This should be made a law.
Public office holders must use only public facilities while in office. Schools, hospitals etc

They will not award the contract to his company so hospitals and healthcare staff is never a priority to them. It's road, road and more road.
Next will be stadium.

Oya, make the builder of Lagos too come use Lagos hospitals, bunch of thieving clowns

Na the mumu wey dey hype and defend these criminals online dey pain me , someone puts you in perpetual and abject poverty with untold suffering, but because of religion and tribe, you think he's the best thing to happen after bread and beans

You spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and euros to get health care abroad as a govt official, while the health care system is rotting away, something you could fix with half the amount you spend yearly on medical trips abroad, and you turn around and ask Nigeria s that can afford Japan not to Japan, but instead stay and help fix the country when you as a leader is not even inspiring the people one bit

This is beyond sad, I had hoped Nigeria can still get better, but with the new low tinubu has dragged us too, it may take several generations to make Nigeria good, not even better.

So I say, if you have the means to legally Japa, don't even think twice, at least do that for your kids

The doctor themselves are more corrupt than the government, they are killing hundreds of people daily by their bad attitudes towards work, something they can not do when they get abroad.
Go to our public hospital, those doctors are getting salaries for nothing
They can complain about the government but they themselves don't deserve what they are getting paid
Government need to provide them all they want but also create a task force to monitor them, they are not working.

It's unfortunate but that is what almost every Nigerian politician does. They focus on attention grabbing project to get cheap popularity so that he can be called Mr Project.

No one will call him Mr Project if he builds and equip hospitals and schools. Sycophants and paid praise singers will go overdrive if he were to build bridges and flyovers.

Misplaced priorities of Nigerians and the led. Both are equally guilty.

Nigeria is building gradually and I think with baby focused steps, we shall get it right.

So far so good, the doctors have made known their plight, and I think the minister may look into their direction sooner or later.

Also, I noticed that the doctors are not striking because of equipment nor their under-staff, they are doing so because they want to earn more. While earning more is good, they should not put the life of the citizens at risk.

If a loved one looses someone, he can't get him/her back but, the strike can always be addressed. They should add wisdom in all that they do.

how much do you pay your doctors?

Do you provide enabling environments for them to practice?

Are the hospitals well equipped?

Is the govt prioritizing doctors like other countries do?

Why do you owe your doctors salaries for month?

Doctors are humans too, some of them use their personal money to run few things in the hospital, above all they still get owed salaries for month.

But here you are opening your mouth waaa like a donkey blaming doctors, when you should direct the blames to the very govt that have bastardized all of our institutions

That is why we have ministries of health to ensure doctors do their jobs.
