Hello everyone, in this thread I'm going to show how to plant sweet potatoes.

If you'd follow me, I'm going to show practically how lucrative sweet potatoes farming has become, this is not going to be a theory based analysis but practical as I'm going to keep updating on the development of the sprouts from planting, up until harvest begins

what plant spacing did you use for the sweet potato planting.

how much does the vine cost to cover like one acre?

Good morning, I space 8-10 inches apart with a depth planting of 2-4 inches deep. I cut at the 3rd to the 5th node

However, during shortage of vine, I plant as if I'm circling the very tiny vines round the heap. That's what I do, though one can still cut those vines and plant.

I started noticing that if planted with other vines the same way, the rest would start sprouting and cover them while they're still struggling to survive. This is a practical experience

While circling the vines to plant, make sure that the nodes (eyes), are facing up. At the tip, the eyes are left uncovered 3 inches in length.

Some bear sprouts as well, do not cover with sand, leave them uncovered 3 inches in length as well. I will give a pic of this (if I no forget)

Your second question depend on the size of your heap or ridge and the spaces apart.

Secondly, it depends on if you are getting a processed vine or the unprocessed one.

Some Research Institutes sell per 100 processed stems

This particular vine was short so I had to plant it that way.
Also notice that the eyes (head-end) are left uncovered. If long enough to go round the heap, I'd plant it that way and wherever it has sprout out-shoots, I'd bring them out and keep them u covered

This farm was done 31 of August 2024

Mr OP, where have you been since. Come and update this thread please.

Question: which research institute can I get the vines for planting?

Secondly, what do you mean by processed or unprocessed vines?

Thanks in anticipation. Beautiful thread by the way.

Sorry bro, I was supposed to be here sincebut work never allowed me. I almost forgot I have such a thread on nairaland.

The thread would continue this year.

The harvests have been made already.

Processed vines are the ones that were cut and made ready for planting.

Which state are you

@OP well done keep up the good work.
Please any idea where one can get the processed vine. I got some vines which I planted last year from an experienced farmer but the potatoes had lots of leaves but there was no tuber when it was time to harvest.
I asked the farmer that gave me the vines. He said his own didn't turn out well too.

So I am thinking of getting from more reputable sources this year.
