A devastating fire has completely destroyed the Cross River State High Court in Ogoja, located at the Government Reserved Area (GRA), News360 Nigeria reports.

The fire, which broke out on Sunday around 7 PM, reduced the building to ashes, leaving nothing behind.

Eyewitnesses, including Sani Mohammed, who was present at the scene, have stated that the fire was not related to bush burning, despite the ongoing dry season and farming activities.

“The front of the court is tarred, and the back is far off any bush or dry grass, so it cannot be bush burning that caused the fire.

“Also, there was no power supply at that time; in fact, Ogoja barely had light, so it cannot be an electrical fault.

“People here are suspecting that it may be someone who has a strong case in the court,”
he said.

Mohammed stated that his effort and that of others to quench the fire proved abortive as no fire service was present to put off the fire.

“There was no fire service. Meanwhile, their office is close to the court, but that place is moribund; it needs complete rehabilitation and massive funding.

“We were fetching water in buckets to quench the fire, but the fire overwhelmed us, and that’s how everything burnt down. It’s so sad,”
he fumed.

Efforts to reach the State Fire Service in Ogoja for comment proved abortive at the time of filing this report.

However, the Comptroller of the Federal Fire Service in the State, Mr Cletus Makers (Retd.), decried lack of funding for the service in the state.

He said the only fire truck in the state is in Calabar, about 200km away from Ogoja.

“I know the logistics problem; we don’t have equipment. The only equipment we have was the one I was able to fight to bring down which is in Calabar. That’s the only equipment we have in the whole state.

“Even if they want to move to Ogoja, the possibility of doing anything is not there,” Makers said.

On his part , the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Augustine Grimah said the matter would be thoroughly investigated as an arson case.

LMAO!

No be only cctv, na dstv.

Them dey tell you say ordinary nepa light no dey place, you dey talk of cctv. Ogoja looks like a town where government presence is entirely non-existent. If not for fine road infrastructure that has occasioned building of modern houses by the town's inhabitants, the only significant government establishment in Ogoja is the Okuku campus of the University of Cross River.

That town defies logic and no one seems to know what the actual problem is. Maybe that's why they've been clamouring to be made into another State, because the government abandonment is an SOS situation.

Just like you know how bad your leaders are,but you failed to do nothing about it. I am sure you are worse than your leaders.

The question is what if someone in the community knows the culprit, but can't do shit?

You and I knows that, if anyone goes to report to the cops on the condition of anonymity or what they call it.. same cops will tell the culprit who came to report him. And you know what might likely happen to the reporter after then..

That's the same example I gave with you,and your leaders. No dey come hear come run mouth, when you never remove log when dey your eye.

Ogaja, I did my senior secondary school there, federal science college ogoja, guess that's the place that's been turned into a university campus. I akampa and igoli if my spellings are right. The era of odumale, where those akampa boys obtain us and the rival war between them.

I visited Ogoja twice in December. Even did small toiletries shopping at that Jopal. That town has enormous business potentials, but the lack of government presence is very worrisome.

I spent two hours driving round that town looking for where to eat proper "bolë and fish", I no see. E shock me. The annoying part is that the town is even expensive to live in, especially that Okuku and Abakpa axis.

Then it was crazy, not like now I think there's more exposure. All those boys then knew nothing more than obtaining, fighting and problems. One day I will surely go back there.
