Tinubu Named THISDAY Man of the Year for Resilience and Bold Reforms

Tinubu's bold reforms, resilience, and determination to take tough decisions has earned him THISDAY Man of the Year 2024.

On a balance of scales and given all considerations, it is hard to find anyone, who could fairly challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the THISDAY Man of the Year commemoration.

Determined and unfazed in the face of mounting challenges and attendant hardships, the president marches on with his audacious reforms to change Nigeria.

In his first and only media interview, he told the nation "you can’t be doing the same thing and expect different outcomes."

With that, he served the nation notice of his resolve to stick to his reforms.

The president, who ran his election campaign on the mantra of emi lo kan (it’s my turn to be president), has waltzed through some of the most troubling phases of his less than two years old presidency.

From merely providing leadership to introducing very unpopular but promising reforms, Tinubu has proven to be that daring and gritty leader, who is driven more by convictions of his choices than pandering to sheer sentiments or the crowd.

Although the removal of subsidy from petroleum had been settled by the previous istration of Muhammadu Buhari, and as a matter of legislation by the ninethNational Assembly, owning and managing the consequences of that choice had been Tinubu’s hardest job since he took over as president.

The floating of the naira to enable it find its level against other currencies, particularly against the dollar and by extension, engender the stability of the market, was an equally difficult decision that Tinubu had to make.

No doubt, the economic situation the country found itself was desperate. There was no need postponing the evil day. Tough choices needed to be made. With courage, nevertheless, Tinubu dared the consequences and took a decision he reckoned was in the nation’s best interest.

Tinubu knew from the get-go that fighting for the financial autonomy of the local government system was going to set him against the governors. This much he knew being a former governor. But after weighing his options, he knew better than to continue to perpetrate an aberration and he did that which was for the collective good.

His controversial tax reform bills that are currently before the tenth National Assembly have almost set him up against a section of the country, which, according to some of its leaders, was designed against them, and made to favour a particular region in the federation.

But at his recent presidential media chat, Tinubu made it clear: There’s no going back on the tax reform bills.

Yet, conscious of the many challenges the country has since faced, particularly the hardship believed to have been occasioned by some of the economic decisions taken by his istration, the president has continued to introduce measures to cushion the effects and across all sectors.

There was the introduction of the CNG buses as buffer for subsidy removal. He has given state governments more money than any istration in Nigeria’s contemporary history, and is constantly assisting the states with palliatives to help ameliorate the situation.

It was also the year external reserves swelled back up beyond $40 billion and trade surplus resurfaced and moribund refineries sputtered back to life. Methodical, yet forceful in his approach; deliberate and single-minded in his style, even his most implacable foes concede that Tinubu is a different kind of leader.

The president’s place and roles in global politics and governance, especially in Africa and the subregion in particular, are evident. His role as the ECOWAS chairman has been a difficult one given the unconstitutional change of governments in some of the neighbouring states, including Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, which has created a degree of instability in the regional body polity.

Notwithstanding the notice of exit served on the three nations of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, Tinubu, who recently promised the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, that the regional body would embrace wisdom in addressing the matter, has begun to consider a way of bringing them back into the fold. Talk about thinking leadership!

There might have been a few slips here and there while testing the waters on assumption of office and trying to get a hang of the state of play, a determined Tinubu has kept his eyes on the goal and was not moved by the uninformed clattering around him.

Whether lampooned as T-Pain or lionised as T-Gain, Tinubu could not be accused of lacking courage to take tough decisions or the will to stay the course.

Without a doubt, his approach to reform and governance could benefit from more rigour, consultation and inclusion, and his interventions could be better paced and executed. But it is difficult to argue that Tinubu did not earn his stripes as the most consequential Nigerian of 2024.

Overall, the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has by every note, caution, indication and inaction, earned the THISDAY Man of the Year, because of his doggedness, resilience and his ability to take tough decisions, even against the grain.

What are the lessons?

Recall that during the 2022 to 2023 presidential campaigns, Arise News and ThisDay used every opportunity to attack Tinubu.

Ms Ojynika Ojy Ope brought every Tinubu's gaffe to amplify on her gossip segment of their morning show. Rufai Oseni said all sorts and asked Tinubu to bring himself to their studios so he (Rufai Oseni) could cross-examine him. Tundun Abiola abused people who spoke for Tinubu. Abati sometimes got carried away and ed the fray. Even their proprietor wrote a scathing release where he specifically said that Nigeria must avoid a "Noriega moment", in reference to Tinubu's unproven drug dealings. That press release was in bad taste that the duo of Dele Alake and Bayo Onanuga took the owner of Arise News to the cleaners over his unethical business practices. The owner of Arise News even tried to control public opinion by insisting Tinubu must be interviewed by them or other media house.

We must that the media house gave positive press coverage to PDP, Atiku, LP, Peter Obi and Godwin Emefiele as the latter contributed his quota to bury tye Nigerian economy.

They even lied that APC Presidential Campaigns had asked ThisDay/Arise Media Group to remove Rufai Oseni from the Morning Show and Shaka Momodu as ThisDay Editor in favour of patronage should Tinubu win.

After the heat from Bayo Onanuga and Dele Alake, Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria had to intervene to reach a settlement as the owner of ThisDay/Arise found himself in hot water.

The morning after the results were declared, Rufai Oseni exhibited a sad and forlorn look as he could not conceal his pain.

Following Tinubu's victory, they brought all sorts of human beings to their media station to discredit the elections and discuss a matter in a court. When all that failed and the handwriting on the wall was clear, their boss started making moves to ingratiate himself to the leaders of the day. For example, he invited himself to attend a Nigeria-Saudi Investment Forum to catch the eye of the president.

Only recently, they tried to discredit the coastal highway by jumping from one issue to another without questioning someone for allocating public land to himself.

What has changed from the antagonistic media group to bromancing the president?

What are the lessons:

1. Put your eye on the ball and believe in what you do and do what you are convinced in. Had Tinubu allowed himself to be misled to the biased media group, they'd have messed him up.

2. Many organizations take editorial decisions to favour the business interests of their owners. Do not be deceived that they are giving a voice to you or your feelings. They are doing what is politically expedient at that time.

3. I think it is unethical for a media house to dish out awards. A media is a business, but how can they be objective in coverage when they give awards to people they ought to report?

4. How come Channels TV, TVC, NTA, VOA et al do not give awards to people?

5. It is clearly a battle of business survival which makes this award in bad taste, unethical and unacceptable.

Let's look into the future:

1. Atiku and Obi would condemn ThisDay/Arise for giving Tinubu the award.

2. Tinubu should thank them and reject it.

3. I am ashamed of Tinubu's enemies eating their words. Why can't they stand by what they claimed to have believed?

Brilliant piece from Thisday. No doubt BAT is my man of the year 2023/2024. I greatly ire strong leaders determined to push reforms for the betterment of a nation

Wonders shall never end
Recognizing him as THISDAY Man of the Year underscores the significant impact of bad leadership in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Same man whose policy raises concern and debates is crowned THISDAY Man of the Year

Unbelievable, when MNK was busy discrediting the Media team in Nigeria, I chose to see it from a loopsided view of baseless banter and attacks
But now I know more
It's a pity we sunk this deep

Happy new year

Great.

This day is not even pro APC or the President.

So, this is a surprising, yet welcome recognition of the President's determination, courage, and fortitude.

If you are a Nigerian who has been frustrated that Nigeria has not made the sort of progress it should have since independence, give this President a chance.

He can't change everything that has gone wrong in the last 50 years in less than 2 years. And unless he is a miracle worker, which he is not, and nobody is, it is unlikely that he will be able to change Nigeria into Eldorado in 4 or even 8 years.

But one thing is sure, in just 18 months, this man has shown that he is probably the best President Nigeria has ever had.

If you doubt me, please name any Nigerian President that has done in just 18 months what Mr Tinubu has accomplished in the same time frame.

This man is setting the foundation for Nigeria's economic greatness, but that greatness will only be achieved if future Presidents after him continue to build on the foundation.

Do not be in a rush to vote in another President in 2027 that will destroy the foundation Mr Tinubu is building.

She only treats what is trending in her own fish head not on social media.she liked it when the name Tinubu or Igbo victimhood appears on her YouTube thumbnail
