Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Nentawe Yilwatda, has blamed poor organisation for the food queue stampedes recorded in parts of Nigeria during the 2024 Yuletide season.

Yilwatda, who was a guest on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-End Review, said food queue stampedes were not only limited to Nigeria but have been recorded in advanced parts of the world like the United States.

Stampedes have taken place in more developed countries than Nigeria,” the minister said.

If you recall, Hurricane Katrina in the US, when they had food distribution because of poor organisation, they had stampede.

Also, in the school food distribution in Texas, in the US, the same thing happened. It has happened in several countries that are more developed than Nigeria where you have poor organisation.

In December 2024, three major food queue stampedes were recorded in Oyo, Anambra and Nigeria’s capital city Abuja. About 70 lives were lost in the unfortunate incidents which many have blamed on hunger and the high cost of food. The private organisers of the food distribution programmes have been detained by the police.

The humanitarian minister boasted that the Federal Government is the biggest distributor of relief materials to the poorest of the poor in Nigeria. He said the government distributes relief materials more than private individuals yet no stampede has been experienced in government programmes.

Yilwatda encouraged private persons willing to donate relief items to Nigerians to get the proper organisation right and seek the ministry’s help.

In other words, if you want to distribute anything, hand it over to government officials to do it as they get the job done without occurence of stampede or death grin

They always look for ways to justify wrong doings and bad things in comparing with other nations.

They will not compare the benefits and good things other progressive nations are enjoying

Office.

He wants people to donate what they want to give to the public to the ministry so they can distribute them. No one knows the millions that have benefited from government relief distribution. The internally displaced people camps fund mismanagement come to mind.

The only problem here is people want to be seen doing good. They want a public show and that has to be controlled.

Getting a list of people they want to assist and making financial gifts to either their s or cash handouts without throwing up an event would solve this.
There is lack of trust between the helpers and the helped. If they want them to buy rice, they might end up buying garri.
Noone wants to help you with your needs. They only want you to have what they want to give you.

Everywhere there is free things, it's human nature to rush there and want to get more than the other guys. Hence the reason for stampede.

USA own is usually drugs/fentanyl.

If you are sharing free fentanyl, they will rush you.

Their comparative analysis with other countries is always hinged on negativity, they carefully exclude all the good deeds worthy of emulation and hold on to one negative incidence to claim parity with successful nations. It's a shame.

How foolish can this person be?

When it comes to failure, we start competing with western countries, but speak of success anf they will tell you Nigeria can not be compared to these countries

Now is the time not to compare ourselves to any country, but to find ways of making sure such nonsense does not happen again.

As you are comparing the negative aspects, to compare the positive aspects too like uninterrupted electricity, good roads, standard Healthcare, security, etc.

You are quoting Hurricane Katrina as a major cause of food shortage in a sane clime. Right, so what was the cause of food shortage in Nigeria without a natural disaster. Ok, Hurricane Tinubu I guess 🙄

They won't tell us how these countries enjoy 24 hours electricity a day. How the citizens are well taken care of health wise. Good road network and others. But once they mess up they will start their negative comparisons

Ok.
We know but govt should take the responsibility of not enacting a law that will obligate organisers of food distribution to do it accordingly.
