Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, Chairman and CEO of Chisco Group has rejected the title of Mayor of Ndigbo (Lagos) initially scheduled to be conferred on him. The ceremony slated for December 16, 2024 was to take place at the Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island Lagos.

In a press release personally signed by him, Chief Anyaegbu expressed deepest gratitude for the honour of selecting him for the title. He however decided to "step back" from the opportunity, due to "the politically charged nature of this position".

It will be recalled that an Igbo business community had planned to install the businessman as the first Mayor Ndi Igbo "as part of efforts to address longstanding business conflicts and foster economic growth."

The Media and Publicity Sub-Committee of the Organising Committee’s chairman, Ifeanyi Agwu stated that the Coalition of Concerned Igbo Business Community and the United Igbo Elders Worldwide selected Anyaegbu because it was necessary to have an office mediating between Igbo businesses.

He stressed, “The conferment of Mayor Ndi Igbo is borne out of an urgent necessity that time was way overdue. The republican and enterprising uniqueness of Ndi Igbo has sometimes been misunderstood by some elements of our host communities. Consequently, relationships have strained to boiling points. Many times Igbo businesses have been challenged, provoked, harassed, and economically assaulted by some in our host communities, in and outside Nigeria.

In the invitation cards sent out, the organisers said Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and many states' governors will attend the ceremony. The Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe was to serve as royal father of the day, amongst other royal fathers.

The Obi of Onitsha has however dissociated himself from the ceremony. He dismissed claims that he will serve as royal father of the day.

According to a statement by his Chief of Staff, Osita Anionwu, the monarch said he had neither been approached nor consented to participate in the event. “His Majesty does not understand the purpose of the event and would not want to be associated with it."

cheesy

No be only Mayor, na Duke

For a group that claimed not to fancy having a unified leader/head, they have too many Eze-Ndigbo and Mayors than any other group living outside their home region

Chief Chidi Anyaegbu is an intelligent man. "Mayor of NdiIgbo" is an utterly useless title that only jobless loafers would consider valuable, meanwhile the good chief Anyaegbu controls a multibillion Naira business empire that will not afford him even a minute of free time for such empty pursuits. I am a proud Anambra man but here I must call a spade exactly what it is.

You're right. It was organized by jobless loafers and noisemakers. I am proud to be an Igbo man but sometimes the actions of a few among us causes me to hide my face in shame.

I’ve come to realize that the wealthy Igbo folks in Lagos understand the environment and sensibilities of the people and I have a number of them as friends and partners

As such, they never thump their chests, berate the Yorubas or do anything that will cause strife so their businesses will remain safe

But you see the scavengers among them, especially the ones that have never crossed Ore into the SW, they are the loudest despite being the brokest and the ones who sit in forests of Alaigbo insulting and denigrating Yorubas and what we’ve been able to build for ourselves
