French and the New Strategic Partnership with Nigeria: A Departure from the Old Order -Prince Nixon Okwara

In a world rapidly shifting towards a multipolar order, where emerging powers and old alliances are being redefined, Nigeria must strategically reassess its international partnerships. The recent shift towards a new partnership with signals an important departure from the old order, reflecting Nigeria’s readiness to engage in meaningful collaborations that align with its national interests.

Just as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on restructuring Nigeria’s institutions, which for decades have been operating on a faulty foundation, it is equally critical to forge new international partnerships that can strengthen the country's global standing. Continuing with past alliances that have shown limited results would be akin to doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different outcomes.

The Modern Multipolar World and Nigeria’s Position

In the current geopolitical landscape, power is no longer concentrated in a few countries. The emergence of a multipolar world, where nations like China, India, and blocs like BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) challenge traditional Western dominance, has reshaped the dynamics of global governance, economics, and diplomacy.

This new reality requires Nigeria to align itself with partners who offer strategic benefits without compromising its sovereignty. , despite its historical challenges in Africa, presents an opportunity for Nigeria to renegotiate relations from a position of strength. ’s waning influence in its former colonies and Nigeria's growing prominence in West Africa provide the perfect conditions for a recalibrated partnership.

Why the New French Partnership Matters Enhanced Bilateral Relations

The new French deal offers Nigeria an opportunity to focus on mutual economic and security benefits rather than the exploitative dynamics of the past. President Tinubu’s understanding of international politics ensures that this partnership is negotiated from a position of strength, not dependency.

Neutrality in a Divided World

Given the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the evolving dynamics of BRICS, aligning with Russia or China at this time may not serve Nigeria’s long-term interests. A neutral, pragmatic partnership with allows Nigeria to maintain strategic autonomy while reaping economic and diplomatic benefits.

Strategic Investment and Innovation

's focus on renewable energy, infrastructure development, and technology innovation aligns with Nigeria's developmental goals. This partnership could lead to investments in critical sectors, helping Nigeria diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil.

Regional Security Collaboration

With the ongoing security challenges in the Sahel region and the fight against terrorism, ’s military expertise and resources can complement Nigeria’s efforts in ensuring stability in the region.

Global Powers and Their Modern Interests

The world powers today, including the U.S., China, Russia, and regional players like the European Union, have clear strategies and foreign policy objectives:

United States

Focused on maintaining its global leadership through economic influence, military presence, and strategic alliances, the U.S. prioritizes regions where its interests align with democratic values and free-market systems.

China

Driven by its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China seeks to expand its economic influence by investing in infrastructure and trade networks across Asia, Africa, and Europe. However, its debt-trap diplomacy and opaque agreements often lead to concerns over sovereignty.

Russia

With its Ukraine invasion and strained relations with the West, Russia is focused on projecting power through BRICS and alternative alliances. However, its aggressive foreign policies may not align with Nigeria’s need for stability and peaceful growth.

European Union ()

, while dealing with diminishing influence in Francophone Africa, is looking for partnerships with rising powers like Nigeria to stabilize its foothold in the region.

Why the New Deal Is Better

The partnership with allows Nigeria to negotiate from a position of strength. Unlike past alliances, where Nigeria played a ive role, this new deal acknowledges Nigeria’s regional dominance and economic potential.

Reduced Overreliance on Old Allies:

Traditional alliances with Britain and the U.S. have often sidelined Nigeria's priorities, while BRICS nations may not offer the necessary stability.

Leveraging ’s Needs: With losing influence in its former colonies, Nigeria can demand fairer and establish itself as a strategic partner.

Conclusion
Diplomacy is not just about alliances; it is about redefining relationships to serve national interests. Nigeria's shift towards a neutral but strategic partnership with positions the country to maximize its regional and global influence without being entangled in the ideological clashes of other world powers. By prioritizing national interests, fostering ability, and strengthening diplomatic ties, Nigeria can emerge as a key player in the new multipolar world order, forging alliances that reflect its aspirations and potential.

You can't trick the west.... is one country that is created to dominate and suppress smaller countries....

They will never give Nigeria that opportunity to be a key player in the scheme of things in the world.

Tinubu should tell us the truth.... The real agreement he signed with the French president... Because I am not buying this lies.

Nigerians aren't that smart. We are far from coming out of our predicament because we don't know the difference between what is good what is bad. We cannot differenciate between good and bad decisions. Anything these leaders say it's good we follow like zombies. We have a crumbling economy, we have a dilapidated security, we have brainless leaders, the conditions keep getting worst, these so called leaders have been coming up with Policies that only increases the gap between the rich and the poor. Sadly we have people like you that will keep blowing their trumpets and keep telling Nigerians they are doing the best things for us. FYI, Niger Republic broke ties with and became the fastest growing economy. So could not help them after all the years of friendship? It's nigeria they like most? Is this a difficult maths?

Just look at the writer's agbado face
APC has degraded Nigeria internationally
Biden came to Africa and he's going to Angola
This has become the norm since APC entered the scene of Nigerian politics with their bitterness and hateful attitude which made them undermine a sitting Nigerian president in the international scene multiple times between 2013 to 2015.
Where is the Nigeria that saw visits of two US Presidents and two Prime Ministers of the UK within 8 years?
Where's the Nigeria whose president got multiple requests for state visits to the US, UK, and got itted to UN security council, G20 summits, hosted WEF which was disrupted by the politicised terrorist group?
Today we're going after in a macabre and brazen manner like orphans. Same that has been totally and roundly rejected by our neighbours who are their colonial subjects until recently. What benefits can we really get from when others couldn't get anything tangibls in the past 60 years of servitude? They largely impoverished our West African landscape!! Nigeria should be showing leadership among Ecowas in asking for reparations of the commonwealth of our west African brothers from instead of this cosiness that tethers on the brink of betrayal of the west African emancipation cause

Sometimes I wonder why our leaders feel they must attach us to a "superpower"to succeed.
Most of these Superpower countries are already waning..on their last ebb. Countries like UK, , Spain and most European countries can't offer anything to Africa save Russia.
A new wave of Countries are rolling in as the next boys in the hood..only the US is still doggedly holding on but it too will fade into economic oblivion soon enough. It's just how things work since the dawn of time ..from the Egyptians to the Persians, to the Greeks, Romans, Mongolians, Vikings, Spanish, French,British, German, now US..Empires rise and fall.
What we need to do as a country is to develop our own unique plan as country just like the Chinese did..it took them a generation to convert from dirt poor 3rd world to mega super 1st world power..in just 40years.

In what way is Nigeria equal to any former French colony? Size, GDP, population? By the way, Nigeria has been largest trading partner in Africa for many years.

Yes Nigeria is happy that French hold over its colonies has weakened ( but Russia is not an upgrade) but this is precisely the moment to sign MoU's with a weakened and its President who is facing challenges in

The opinion of a tinubu sycophant.

The French military just offloaded their 1960s "fighter jets" to the Nigerian Air Force at a huge price.
They have been looking for how to sell those artifacts and they finally did.

Even their colonies were smart enough not to buy those relics.

They just got a mugu in Nigeria.

As far as I know Tinubu or Chagoury do not have any criminal convictions over their relationship.

I believe partnership is about, give and take

If this is really a good deal and we "negotiated from a position of strength"

What are the Frenchs getting in return ?

If the Frenchs weren't nice with their other old colonies, who kissed their a** for more than 60 years, why would they wanna be nice to us ?
