A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday local time. Israel agreed Tuesday to the ceasefire to stop the war it has been fighting with the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon for more than a year.
"The Security Cabinet approved the United States' proposal for a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon this evening, with a majority of 10 ministers in favor and one opposed," the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement late Tuesday.
The announcement came during some of the heaviest fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in months, with Israeli airstrikes hitting Beirut and Israeli troops pushing deeper into southern Lebanon on Tuesday, as Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel.
President Biden welcomed the news, saying, "This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities."
Hezbollah — a terrorist and political force in Lebanon backed by Iran and listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Israel and several other countries — started launching rockets into Israel a day after the Palestinian militant group Hamas led an attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, setting off the war in Gaza.
Israel has launched extensive airstrikes across Lebanon, including one in September that killed Hezbollah's longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israel also sent ground troops into southern Lebanon, saying it was fighting to push the Terrorists away from the border so that thousands of evacuated residents who fled Hezbollah's rockets in northern Israel could return safely.
Almost 14 months of the Israeli military campaign in Lebanon has killed more than 3,700 people, many of them civilians, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, and close to 1 million people have been displaced across Lebanon, according to the United Nations.
Lebanon's first responders say Israeli strikes target them as they work to save lives
In northern Israel, about 80 people, including soldiers and civilians, have been killed in the fighting and about 60,000 residents have evacuated since October 2023, according to the Israeli government.
Before the Cabinet vote, Netanyahu laid out his reasons for ing the ceasefire, including saying that Israel has dismantled much of Hezbollah's fighting capabilities and killed many senior officials. But he warned that Israel retains the right to attack Hezbollah again if necessary.
"In full coordination with the United States, we are maintaining full military freedom of action," Netanyahu said in his TV address. "If Hezbollah violates the agreement or attempts to rearm, we will strike."
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati welcomed the ceasefire, thanking the United States and for helping facilitate the deal.
"This understanding, which outlined a roap for the cessation of hostilities, was reviewed by me this evening, and I consider it a key step towards establishing calm and stability in Lebanon and enabling the return of displaced people to their homes and towns," Mikati said. "It also contributes to promoting regional stability."
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden Tuesday, Biden explained that over the next 60 days, the Lebanese army and state security forces will take control of their territory, and Israel will gradually withdraw. The United States, and other countries will work to help ensure the agreement is implemented, but no U.S. troops will be deployed in southern Lebanon, he said.
The Lebanese military — which is separate from Hezbollah and has tried to stay out of the fight with Israel — and a United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon are expected to deploy thousands of soldiers in southern Lebanon, as an international monitors compliance by the different sides, The Associated Press reported.
But concerns in Israel and Lebanon remain about how long the ceasefire can hold and whether civilians can be kept safe.
"This agreement is not good because it does not require the Lebanese army and government to disarm Hezbollah," Avigdor Lieberman, an opponent of Netanyahu who is a lawmaker in Israeli parliament, said Monday before the vote.
"It's going to be difficult for Netanyahu to sell this" to the northern Israeli evacuees, Amos Harel, a former nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., and a journalist at Israel's Haaretz newspaper.
And the deal left questions about what happens next for the war in Gaza.
Biden said the U.S. would make a push in the coming days with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and others to reach a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza.
He also said the United States remains ready to conclude an agreement with Saudi Arabia that would normalize relations with Israel and include a security pact and economic assurances, with a pathway for a Palestinian state.

It's bloody hilarious how Nasrallah was going on and on about not stopping until Palestine's a state and Israel's gone. Now, where's he? Died under the rubble with his mates like cowards.
This ceasefire's is a shame on hezbollah. Doesn't even include Hamas, so Hezbollah's just left them high and dry. And now, Hezbollah's gonna pull back and let the Lebanese army take control, but if they try any funny business, the strikes are gonna keep coming.
Thousands of Hezbollah terrorists are six feet under, their ammo's been destroyed, and their tunnels are gone. And what did they get out of it? Nothing. They wasted their time fighting a lost cause and achieved squat. Now, they're worse off than when they started. People of northern Israel will possibly return to their home soon, while hezbollah managed to lose everything they worked for In years. Tunnel, leadership, ammo, Southern Lebanon stronghold, it's literally in Israel's hand now!😂😂
If only they'd kept their noses out of it, they might still be relevant, But now, the ceasefire's the only thing keeping them alive, and they're relieved about it.
Israel's smashed their stronghold, taken out Nasrallah and his crew, launched a ground invasion, and they're still going strong. So, what's Hezbollah actually achieved?

Have some shame small now
The heavy losses suffered by IDF is the only reason they quickly agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah
They thought hez na Hamas, even Hamas is still able to fire missiles and is still holding more than 100 hostages even with the mad rage Bibi was using.
October 7 really demystified IDF.
Just so you know, the fight has moved from Palestine to everywhere, Jews are a target of attacks everywhere now even in USA and all because Nethanyahu feels his political survival depends on elongating the war.
Jews are more unsafe than they were on October 7 and Bibi's mad rage is to blame for that
Hezbollah actual achievements include ensuring most part of northern Isreal is not livable, even bibis home there was hit
Than Hamas is still able to carry on resistance even with the seige on gaza for over a month now and most importantly A WARRANTY OF ARREST WAS ISSUED BY THE ICC FOR BIBI , unprecedented but would have been avoided if bibi listened to even his closest ally

What are you on about? Every army takes losses. Even Russia's lost thousands of soldiers. So, why's Hezbollah acceptin' a ceasefire if they're winning the war? They're supposed to be fighting for a Palestine state, but that's not exactly happening, is it?
And, let's be real, if Hezbollah's so strong, how did Israel manage to smash their stronghold and tunnels? That's not exactly a sign of strength, is it? Now, I know Hezbollah swore not to withdraw, but it looks like they're doing just that. That's a bit of backtracking. 😂😂
At the end of the day, it looks like Hezbollah's lost all sorts of key assets, and they still didn't get that Palestine state for Hamas. Let me repeat the question.
1. If the IDF was suffering heavy losses, why did they manage to take out Hezbollah's leadership and destroy their tunnels and ammo dumps?
2. How can you say Hamas is still "carrying on resistance" when they're just firing off a few rockets and gettin' smashed by the IDF?
3. If October 7 "demystified" the IDF, why are they still standing strong and defending the country?
5. If Hezbollah's "achievement" is making northern Israel "unlivable," why are they the ones who are actually suffering heavy losses and getting their tunnels and ammo dumps destroyed? From Nasrallah to the pager attack to the other cowards! Lol
6. How can you say the ICC's warrant for Bibi's arrest is a legitimate "achievement" when it's just a politicized move that's not going to achieve anything?
7. Lastly. If Hezbollah's so strong, why did they agree to a ceasefire?
Explain to us since you are so smart! 😂

Israel has shown that the only way to eradicate terrorism is through heavy military pressure.

Correctly stated.
And for those who claimed that Israel did not make much of their ground attacks, they must note that for the first time in over a decade, Israel got to the Litani river. It the area where the Israelis consistently asked Hezbollah to move away from. Give the Israelis another six months and nothing would remain in Lebanon.
Sadly Hezbollah cost Lebanon so much in deaths and destruction of infrastructure.
Israel must put an end to this and let there be peace again in the Middle East. Iran must stop their evil plan to see to the destruction of Israel in 25 years.

Northern Israel remains empty.
Hezbollah added Haifa to the empty cities.
Several Idf bases were destroyed.
Several idf thugs killed (far more than 2006).
A few hours after the ceasefire, thousands of Lebanese are returning to the South.
A few hours after the ceasefire, Israelis CANNOT return to Northern Israel and Haifa.
There's a sense of betrayal and anger among Israelis who see the ceasefire as a huge win for hezbollah.
Once again, Israel lost to Hezbollah.

What's your definition of lost?
Far as I can tell, Israel still got control of it's cities. Unlike hezbollah stronghold that's no more.
No Nasrallah, no ammo, no tunnels for terrorist activities, pushing Hezbollah from southern Lebanon and their stronghold. No Palestine as of now. Israel was able to launch a ground invasion, hezbollah couldn't. The people of northern Israel are returning home, plans will be made for that.
Again, Israel never had any problem with the people of southern Lebanon, just the terrorist ing and aiding hezbollah. Now exactly what did hezbollah achieve? 😂
