First, his beneficiary only gets one leg of the policy if he dies, that is the insurance leg. The investment if forfeited to the insurance company.
Lets also look at fees.
Under a Universal Life Policy, your $600 monthly payment for the first 2 years goes towards fees. The insurance company paid the insurance agent $3k for your policy, paid his uplines (because they sell via network marketing) and incurred other costs. So for the first 2years, you practically have almost zero investment despite the fact that you have paid over $14,000. In addition, they charge the highest annual management fees compared to other mutual funds, meaning that in reality, your investment will not even grow at 5% because their annual fees are constantly eating into it.
Adding this picture to add context to your write up. For the first 6/7 years you are only getting insurance coverage while nothing goes to your investment until year 6/7 (cash value)

Wow! This is even worse than I thought. So I pay into an investment for 7 years but get zero $$$ if I stop investing by year 7.

Ivari/WFG are the products pushed by immigrants for immigrants. I personally prefer buying from insurance companies owned by the big banks because they have a reputation to protect, have a larger pool of fund and a $1m payout will not shake them as much as a smaller company that will start looking for excuses not to pay.
Life insurance is very important, but buy term life policies. The primary goal of life insurance is to protect your family so that they can maintain similar lifestyle if you early. If you were intentional with your investing in your working age, your family will not need life insurance to protect them when you are 65years because your savings will be significant and your children will be of working age themselves. Life insurance is to bridge the gap whilst you are still accumulating your investment.

My question is, are these agents selling to fellow Nigerians including extended family unaware of the investment losses involved in the insurance products they are promoting to newcomers, or are they just ignoring it? Many newcomers, including myself, are poorly informed on this topic, and itâs painful to learn the truth now!

1. [b]Most of the agents are not knowledgeable about the product they are selling. Once they meet with financially savvy customers they tend to run away.
2. Most of the agents by virtue of buying the policy are enrolled into the system (MMM) and they are lured into bringing new customers/ recruit new agents.
3. Some of the agents, are just outright greedy. They know the product doesnât suit majority of their customers yet they shove it down the customers throat because of the high commission they will get.
NB: always do a thorough research before you path away with your money. There are a lot of schemes/scams out there (Pot selling, Vaccum cleaner, water purification etc)they deceive people with the low monthly payments and trap them with high fees and costs that are not commensurate with the product. Some told me to come buy vaccum cleaner for 8k cad, another told my spouse to buy cooking pot of 10k cad.
Pls donât fight with your âextended family memberâ that sold you the product, he or she may not know better.

See wickedness that is packaged as an insurance/investment product and sold to family and friends
From the above CTVnews article:
A key part of problem with the financial strategy, said Vaneesa Cline, a financial planner in Calgary, is that the cost of the insurance ramps up rapidly with age. That diverts payments away from the investment side and saddles buyers with a lifetime of rising costs for a product they may not even need, she said.
Cline said she's helped several former Greatway clients sort out their finances, including one man who was initially paying about $250 per year in s, but by the time she met him in his 60s, he was critically ill and his family was struggling to make payments of $600 per month.
"It's potentially devastating," said Cline. " When (clients) get to retirement and they need the money the most, the cost of the insurance inside these policies is so high that it quickly depletes the cash value that has built in these policies, to where these policies lapse."

I'll consider that. I'm thinking of going for a $1m term and just $200k permanent, and see if I can add illness or something to it. Na ivari o, it's well.

I will try to summarily break down Whole life/Universal/Permanent Life Insurance (will refer to them generally as ULP) and compare them with a 20year Term Life Insurance Policy for the average 40yr old with no major existing health issues.
Under a ULP, the policyholder pays for both insurance and investment. However, the policyholder or the beneficiary can only get one benefit and not both. If the policyholder dies, his beneficiaries get only the insurance payment and forfeit the accumulated investment to the insurance company. Alternatively, the policyholder can end the policy and draw his savings or he draws the accumulated savings using various loan schemes.
Let me clarify with an example. For the average 40year old, healthy male, a ULP policy will average $600 - $1000 monthly or more for a $1m insurance policy. A portion of that payment goes to investment, while a portion goes to insuring him. If he dies at 55yrs, his beneficiaries will get only the $1m payout but will not get the accumulated savings. The insurance company will payout $1m and the accumulated investment will be forfeited to it. Practically none of the people selling this product will tell you this.
If that same guy bought a 20years Term life policy, he will pay $70 - $100 monthly as insurance . He invests $500 monthly in an S & P 500 linked mutual fund (which has returned an average of 11% over the last 20years). If he dies at 55years, his beneficiary will get $1m payout from the insurance company and $220,928.29 from his investment.
Like you've said i think I will just do term policy say 20 or 25years. And put funds in a mutual funds rather than concentrate investment in one insurance product.

Several insurance marketers have tried selling those products to me but they have not been able to convince me as to why it is a good investment.
1. I would suggest that before you buy any form of permanent life insurance (whole or universal life) ensure that you have maximized all the available government forms of investments (TFSA, RRSP, RPP, RESP etc).
2. It is better for you to buy a temporary life insurance (term life) 20/ 25years for very cheap say $30 - $40 per month than buying a permanent life insurance for $500 per month. you can diligently invest the balance of $400+ in the options listed in 1 above.
3. Majority of the insurance marketers are just interested in the huge commission they make. They earn an Average of 50 to 90% of the your first annual . Donât fall for their pressure. On various whatâsapp groups u will see at least 10 Nigerians selling insurance.
4. Permanent life insurance products (whole life and universal) are for the rich folks and established biz owners, who have exhausted all the available govt investment options and are seeking ways to enjoy tax free investments. It is not for new immigrants, folks trying to get their feet established. Infact, for the universal life policy to make financial sense in the future, u need to be putting in at least $700 monthly into it..
Hmmmmmm.........thank you for this.
I'll go with term.

It's easy for people to say, "Why didnât you do your own research" But when you arrive in a new place like Canada, and the people you trust most are extended family and old trusted friends with experience there, you tend to rely on the information they provide. The problem is that most of these agents only think about their own commission and nothing else. They don't really sit down to understand the product they are selling. I recently relocation from Western Canada to Eastern Canada, many of our people have approached me to sell such products thinking I am a new immigrant. Once they realize that's not the case, they step back.

Intellectual scam? Will you like to go back to where we all came from?
I don't think k any of us were promised automatic jobs.
We are all from a 3rd world country, not everyone will be lucky to come and start at same professional level he or she was at in Nigeria, in Canada a 1st world country.
Most people will have to start afresh, or start at a lower level, or even go back to sch.
No one lured us, we all searched for better environment and found Canada.
There are success stories all around. My frnd was a bug guy in Halliburton years ago in Nigeria when he left and started as a security man because you cannot practice engineering without licence here. After his licensing he got 180k role and after two he realized 180k is too small for him. Today he drives truck and owns two trucks and decides how much taxes he pays as a business owner. Will u say the country has scammed him?
If we are complaining, what should Doctors do? After years of study and they have to write exams for three years? Nurses have to write exam as well?
There is a reason they say they want highly educated people, people who will come face the challenge and intellectually carve a way for themselves and survive. Not because there are jobs on the street waiting for us from Nigeria.
Your truth doesn't negate his. Two things can be right at the same time. There's a reason there's no STEM in the category based draws for next year.
The PhDs, doctors, nurses they so called need are driving taxis.
The LMIA scams, TFWs driving down wages etc. Just like the US, Canadian immigration has missed some marks, it's ok to it it. Doesn't mean we're ungrateful to the system. It's the system we hope to see our kids and the young ones grow up in, it's alright to criticise it with the aim of improvement.
Now, what happens when a good majority who wish to climb up the ladder can't? Why is how terrible Nigeria is, always the benchmark for how much we should or shouldn't criticise here?

Just go for insurance and leave investment. If you are wealthy enough yes. I think this issue has been overflogged. Agents are not wicked, we tend to run down our own people over. I believe they also have regulators and Govt will not approve licence to any scheme that is not genuine.
I also did insurance with a little investment tied cos the risk i want to insure against is dying before 65. If i do my family gets insurance, if i don't i get all my investment cash value and enjoy life cos my then all my kids would have been working and also doing well.

Na so most of them dey do. They will tell you that they have partnered with companies and you will land a job after their masterclass/bootcamp. They will even show you various testimonials of âpeopleâ that have gone through their programs and are now working.
When youâre done, youâll now see reality. No partner companies, no jobs. They would work on your CV by adding bogus work experiences at companies you never worked at. Some interview prep here and there and e don finish.

Stop it. The criticism stems from self entitlement. That's the problem. Canada, like every developed nation, gives you opportunities and the tools to achieve your objectives. Objectives and dreams are two different things. You're ready to compete in naija, but once you land in Canada you expect things to happen for you ?
Lastly we live in the information age. Ignorance is not an excuse anymore. You don't leave your home country if things are going well for you. Look at things as a whole. That taxi driver in Canada is making more money, and lives a better life than that doctor when he was back home. That doctor who just came abroad is still sitting there, crying that he was a doctor back home.

Comparing an Uber delivery driver in Toronto, whose wages barely cover their billsâas evidenced by the recent protests by uber drivers in the cityâto a doctor in another country is simply unfair. Iâve followed your posts for a while, and in one of them, you even compared a floor cleaner in Canada earning more than a bank manager in Nigeria without even comparing the cost of living . Itâs clear that your perspective is heavily influenced by your experience of living in abject poverty in Nigeria. However, arriving in Canada, working as an Uber driver, and living on minimum wage doesnât give you the right to criticize others who came here with professional qualifications, striving for better career opportunities, even if theyâve faced challenges or disappointment along the way.
Youâve also shared in your posts that you come from a "wicked" family that sabotaged your business back home. While thatâs unfortunate, not everyone shares those experiences. Many of us come from decent, ive families with different aspirations and expectations. Your past hardships shouldnât become the standard by which you measure othersâ success or ambitions in life.

I'm simply telling people to look at the whole picture. Again, ignorance is not an excuse. If jumping from naija to Canada, why doesn't this person do the full research ? If they did, they'd know nothing is guaranteed anywhere you go, and there may be a chance you'll never practice X (insert profession) in Canada.
My friend let's stop playing games and be direct. A typical Nigerian coming to Canada for example, wants the big boy title, then the money. I'm saying nobody cares about the big boy title in Canada. Chase your objectives not your dreams. That objective is making money and having a better quality of life. The superior complex ingrained in a typical Nigerian is showing in this post.
That "floor cleaner" is a professional building service attendant. He earns 100k in Canada, lives in a better house than 99% of doctors in naija, holds a Canadian port, and when you compare cost of living; that doctor in naija is living in poverty compared to that "floor cleaner".
That Uber driver can package his skills and become a professional driver, while moving out of Toronto. He can work for the TTC or any municipal transit driver and make up to 100k per year with a government gold plated pension. But they'd never take that advice because they're too busy looking for a "Better career opportunities", aka trying to impress people who don't feed them or their family.
I don't understand how my family is part of this discussion, yet I'm projecting ? Not all your family are perfect sir. You can't migrate to Canada if you come from poverty. ive family with different aspirations and "expectations". Just say you're too insecure to work certain jobs because of what your family would think of you. Again I repeat, the same family that doesn't feed you here in Canada.
My past hardship has allowed me to put things in perspective at all times. Again I repeat. Ignorance is no longer an excuse with most people having access to the internet. And Canada owes you absolutely nothing. If you don't know how to hustle in Canada or you can't make it in Canada, just say so. Stop trying to blame the system. Nigerians never look at themselves in the mirror.

Most of your conversations over the years seem to stem from hatred, trauma, and personal struggles, especially toward your family in Nigeria, as reflected in your tone. Please consider seeking therapy to address unresolved emotional pain. Focus on personal growth and channel your energy into productive activities. Avoid generalizing about groups of people, as it hinders constructive dialogue. Let go of resentment and embrace forgiveness to achieve emotional healing and peace. Forget the internet blabbingâyou are clearly not at peace!

My point exactly. Gaslight and change the topic, instead of looking in the mirror. It's the Nigerian way. I share my vulnerabilities and it my mistakes. Hence my success in Canada. The same effort those have used to dig up old posts, and follow me throughout nairaland, have they used the same energy to be successful in Canada ? This is not about me at all.
