Alex Ikwechegh, the federal representative for Aba North and South in Abia State, is scheduled to appear before the Kuje Magistrate Court at noon today over an alleged assault on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

The incident, which occurred on October 27, has sparked widespread criticism, fueled by a viral video showing Ikwechegh in a physical altercation with Abuwatseya.

The Inspector General of Police’s Special Investigation Unit is leading the investigation into the case, following public demand for ability from the lawmaker.

Prominent human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju, who is representing Abuwatseya, confirmed the court appearance and urged the media to cover the proceedings.

“We are on our way to Kuje Magistrate Court for the arraignment of the honourable member who assaulted our client, Mr. Steven, a Bolt driver,” Adeyanju stated.

In the wake of the controversy, Ikwechegh has issued a public apology, expressing regret for his actions.

“I am deeply remorseful for my actions and am committed to taking responsibility,” he said.

The lawmaker also disclosed that he is receiving counselling to address his behaviour, which he acknowledges has caused harm.

The arraignment is a closely watched event, with Nigerians hoping for justice and a demonstration of ability by public officials.

The court’s ruling is anticipated as a potential landmark for cases involving misconduct by elected representatives.

Pride and anger can ruin in a second what you have labored for in years. Smh.

I understand the gravity of his mistake but let us please temper justice with mercy since he has apologized and shown remorse. He is a relatively young guy and will learn a serous lesson from this his misadventure and misbehavior.

I pray that his victim(s) will find it in their hearts to forgive him. Sincerely, it's a very difficult place to be when you have ever experienced the humiliation and injustice similar to what that Bolt guy suffered in his hands and the mere thought that others may have previously suffered same or even worse form of injustice from him but got no justice.

I hope many others have learnt from how pride and arrogance brought this young man down and will not boast about in their wisdom, might and riches.

They will not get anything out of the case. The so called bolt driver was already recording him before the assault began. Who records a man by pointing a phone to his face inside his own compound without permission?

Ofcourse there is also a provocation angle to it.

The guy is smart the evidence is there weither intensionally or not. Well only a failed country or a zoo won't jail him or make him compensate the driver.

your argument is trash. Recording someone in his house is illegal and being allowed to walk away with such recording proves the reps member is not troublesome. It doesn't work that way. In law, it's not just about what happened but the cause. The bolt driver might end up getting into more trouble.

Court case over what? No need politicizing this abeg. The guy is a human being like the rest of us and he has apologized. The bolt driver should sit down with the lawmaker and resolve the matter like men. No need allowing attention seeking activist like Deji Adeyanju to start using the case to seek public relevance.

Pride and" nothing will happen "attitude from the honourable made him to allow the guy to record him.

The assault precede the recording, from what the driver said which to me, make sense,he said he started recording when he was no longer sure of his safety because as at that time the man had started threatening him.

This is commendable! There should be consequences for stupidity. The man was using philanthropy to deceive his people. Now he has small power, he is showing his true colours.

INEC has to teach Nigerians how to active the recall button. That button has been so numb that it has become totally useless in a country that has practised democracy for 25 years.

Nobody is politicizing anything. He felt he could do whatever he liked because of his position as a member of the house.

His facing the court to defend his actions is a welcome development and must be applauded, who knows it may serve as a deterrence to others who like to belittle others.

Jesus loves you. Repent!

I hope this is not the same brain you are using to cross the road?

Because how can you make this kind of comment despite the video evidence showing where the heartless govt official was itting to all the assault on the bolt driver.

The fool saw that the bolt driver is pointing camera to him and he was still saying "yes, video me". I will deal with you and nothing would happen. Now, something has happened. Stupid law-maker. The court has slammed him with N500,000 bail and to appear in court again in few weeks. He doesn't know the power of social media.

The more we tamper justice with mercy, the weaker our systems become. Assault is a criminal offence and should have consequences for it to act as a deterence.

Tomorrow we will talk about saner climes. Sitting down to resolve the issue because he got caught and called out? He verbally and physically assaulted the guy and should be held able.
