Hello, everyone! Please I need guidance on how to go into farming for a complete newbie.

Here's the thing: I commonly see people recommend farming on this forum when someone asks for business ideas, but such people almost never tell you how to go into it in detail.

I believe that knowledge is critical when you want to start any venture in life. It's absurd to just start something without prior knowledge. I believe more in understudy/training or having proven step-by-step guide and that's what has been missing (the problem).

So, could anyone provide recommendations on how to get ground knowledge on agriculture? I prefer something practical instead of just reading ebooks - something more like learning from someone already into this.

PS: I feel more drawn to crop farming - probably because I went to that type of farm when I was very young (up to about 11) - but I am open to suggestions. Also, I am based in Lagos but open to farming in a neighbouring state. Thanks in anticipation!

Farming is very wide ranging from animal husbandry (goats, poultry, pigs etc), Crops ranging from easy to hard, from annual, biannual and monthly harvest types - Farming is a massive course brother- I'll suggest you find someone offline to load u up with details

Online details won't open you up the way u ought to be opened up. In farming, focus on the negatives of whatever u choose to follow. The positives will remain positive. Knowing all cons n difficulties allows u to knw aw to plan n tackle and to knw if u r capable of a start up.

Good luck

Farming is wide. And so, You need an entry point as a newbie. Do you want to deal in crops or livestocks? It's natural to want both and of course as you progress, you will naturally understand what and what you can gum together. However, back to your original question, after picking an entry point, the best way to start us to align yourself to a reputable practicing farmer close to you. He or she , hopefully, will guide you on from there.

Thank you for your responses!

Natbrowny, you're right. Online instructions are usually inadequate for many things - practical is the way. But I am just not totally sure of how to go about it.

I had even thought about ing training/internship opportunities in the past but one issue or another, including age requirements, deprived me. There was a time I even paid for some agropreneurship programme but that money remain uned for till today because the organizer later complained about financial difficulty.

GideonOludayomi, I wrote in the postscript that I feel more drawn to crop farming - meaning I prefer that. However, I am open to other areas as well. The critical thing is to have a solid guide.

And, of course, guidance by a practicing farmer is what I am more after - someone I can understudy. How to find such is the problem; I don't know anyone.

If anyone can help here, please do.

U r welcome sir.
If u r drawn to crop farming, what crops exactly as we both know crops is also wide.

U neeed atleast to be interested in some Specific crops. Then we'll know what u need and don't need. Dos and donts, merits n demerits, difficulty level

U could start practically by ursef in a small way to knw things ursef..

For instance.. I heard many tinz about poultry n rabbits.

I started in my backyard as a test run.
All what i heard, i haven't experienced it till date
10 years n counting.

Some said i was lucky, some said i followed d rules. But instead of following some rules. I created mine

I don't really have a specific target when it comes to crop farming. Well, let's just say food crops. Those are what my big uncle that I stayed with back then specialised in - cassava, coco yam, yam, vegetables, plantain/banana etc.

Where are you based, please? In Lagos here, you don't always get to enjoy the luxury of backyard farming when you are not the landlord. smiley Not even in Ikorodu.

Questions for you:
1) What type of farming are you talking about- subsistence or commercial?

2) Exactly what crops do you prefer?

2) Exactly what crops do you prefer?

At this point:

1. I'd say subsistence for starters. I could go commercial if I am impressed by the initial run. At this point, I am more interested in having something to use my idle time on - even as a hobby.

2. I don't really have a specific crop in mind. The main focus are just food crops, so it can be any of those ones I wrote earlier that the uncle cultivated or even any other. The critical thing is just to have a guide on how to start.

Thank you!

Thanks, but I am not looking for ebooks. They're everywhere. I prefer something practical.

What exactly do you want? Someone to invite you to their farm to intern? How far away are you willing to go? Duration? Have you sought out farms and farmers in your area?

Thank you. What I needed more are recommendations on places I can go to and learn the processes.

I prefer somewhere around the South-West. Could even be a practical learning institution (if not a farm) but not a university because I wasn't a "science student."

Duration isn't really an issue because I don't expect this to take years any way. It's more about finding somewhere.

And, as I noted previously, I don't know anywhere to go around here.

Thanks for sharing.

However, age is a hindrance - as I stated in one of my previous posts. I had seen several similar ones in the past, even with higher age thresholds.
