Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who served as Chairman of the then National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, has ed away.

The NEC is now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Born on October 2, 1941, Nwosu died in a hospital in Virginia, USA.

He was appointed by the then military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, and oversaw the June 12, 1993 election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.

In that presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) triumphed over Bashir Tofa of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC).

Nwosu’s commission introduced the innovative Option A4 voting system and the Open Ballot system.

Despite releasing many election results, Nwosu was ordered to halt further announcements of the June 12 election by the Babangida regime.

In July 2024, the House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to honour Nwosu for his role in conducting what is considered the most credible election in Nigeria’s post-independence history.

For those that care to know or don't care to know... he was an Igbo man ... he did not play tribal politics..this is for that tribe that keeps on calling Igbos out. We can see who the real tribalists are in this country....

He announced SDP as winners of the election, despite Babangida telling him not to ... he was beaten black and blue by soldiers for defending democracy....defending an election a yoruba man won ... igbos voted massively for MKO .... but these yoruba people still decide to have so much hate for the igbos ... reason why I don't blame igbos that do same to them ... its obi that's their problem .. reason all other tribes should judge this matter and dine with a Long spoon while associating with them... u can all see what they did to Jonathan.... used propaganda to destroy his government, so they can get power ... despite a yoruba man ruling from 99 to 2007 ... while the one in asorock used tribal politics to get power ....very divisive and destructive tribe

Always that an Igbo man conducted the fairest and most free election in the history of this country ...but they choose not to give them presidency or even let them go ... one day all these will change for good

You are absolutely right sir. May God console his family and associates. He was a true Patriot.
I am so happy he lived to such a ripe age in spite of the battles he faced.

The man that showed he can never be a coward like Mahmoud. He defied Babangida to announce the results of 19 states that showed Nigerians Abiola won as against the military junta’s expectation and for that soldiers took him into dodan barracks and beat him until he fainted. Young soldiers placed his head on the floor and were stomping his head with their boots . The scars and Injuries from that he suffered coupled with threats to his life and family from Arthur Nzeribe and his group who never wanted Nigeria’s progress through out his lifetime until he died. Without him story that Abiola won the election would have been like that of Awolowo in 1979 and 1983 elections. Tinubu in his democracy day broadcast never mentioned him because he was Igbo but he found it convenient to use the opportunity to condemn Igbos before he fell face flat on the podium

grin lol, the dumbo I quoted claims we hate them yet he created a Yoruba-themed nickname on a Yoruba-man owned forum. Looool. Such daft people. grin lol, you people and your gaslighting, blackmailing and calumny. Lol

Listen Ojukwu, no Yoruba man anywhere cares about you people. We do not send you. We don't even mind what you chose to do with yourself. I dare say no Yoruba thinks about y'all enough to hate you. If Igbo man wins in Lagos and Hausa man wins in Osun, while Igbo man won in all of South eastern states then it's easy to see the cheap, unintelligent blackmail. Bro, Yorubas don't care about your existence or even the air you breathe in!

Look, we're Yorubas and education is our watchword, from the days of our founding fathers, because we're positioned with exposure. We learn from and model towards the Whites, rather than staying logged with our bitter neighbours at home. It's this reason you see Yorubas excelling in the White men's lands at a ratio astronomical than other tribes around.

My dear, every hate you think Yorubas have for anyone in Nigeria is imaginary. I swear it only exists in your people's mind. In fact, most of us Yorubas still patronize your people (ahead of ours) like we don't care, especially if you sell at a better price than ours for the same thing or it's convenient for us because we don't even see you as rivals–this is rare among non-Yorubas. Our goals are to be great, to go far in life and achieve great things along the White men like Soyinka did, like Tope Awotona did, like Gbenga Agboola, Adebayo Ogunlesi, Eniola Aluko, Tion Wayne, https://nairaland.unblockandhide.com/6531702/victory-yinka-banjo-gets-19-scholarship, and so on. We are not poised to embroil with some petty lowlifers back home who are comfortable with being local champions and winning little things. Goodluck to una sha. We'll never hate you because we're never competitors. We're not in the same calibres or lane at all.
Too many people are quoting me and referring to the last election and bla bla bla. The way you people usually quickly allude to 2023 election like we did something unheard of. As though the below didn't happen in Amanbra during 2023 election. https://nairaland.unblockandhide.com/7585504/elderly-man-assaulted-voting-apc

Always playing the election cards, yet I know no other candidates who won in the SE than the fraud Obi. North and West had different winners in their fold yet the gaslighters think others are tribalistic. So ignorant people. Only God knows what Obidients do with their brains apart from hate.
Anyways, goodluck to una o. E ma wa okay. It will never be a duty for me to educate people who can barely read, or even understand a simple concept if they lack any worthy education. My point in a nutshell is: Yorubas do not hate or care about you nor your existence, Igbos! Try to move on, because we have bigger fishes on our tray to fry. Ire o.
