Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that denying the Igbo people the presidency due to past secession attempts is unfair.

Obasanjo made the remarks during a meeting with the League of Northern Democrats led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

Obasanjo said that Nigeria’s three major ethnic nationalities – Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo – have all, at some point, attempted to break away from the country. He cited the North’s strong move to secede through the Araba movement, revealing that his friend Ahmed Jooda had confessed to being part of the plot.

“I think all of us in Nigeria have to rethink… It bleeds my heart when people say because the Igbo had carried out a secession, an Igbo man cannot be the president of Nigeria.



“I say what nonsense? There is no section of Nigeria that has not planned a secession. What is ‘Araba’ in the North? The North planned to break up Nigeria. Ahmed Jooda, a very good friend of mine, said that.

“What is treasonable felony? So, who among us can say I am better than the other? None! So, let us put our heads together and build a country together,” he said.

Nonsense selfish old man.

If u know this all this while you should have stepped down for ekwueme during 2003 PDP primaries after your four years.

The same noise was made about Yoruba Muslim and how they will make wonders as MKO was denied a chance to showcase to Nigerians that Yoruba Muslims will bring the needed change.

The office of the president is not contested, but it is decided and given by the king makers of the country. So, if the king makers want to give it to any tribe or region they wiil come together and do the job.It is not thumb printing on ballot paper on election day that produces the president. You can't be bragging of something you don't have. After all, it's not Kanuri, Nupe or Ibiobio people that have been governing South East for decades hence no development to show for it. And please save us the story about the civil war, Rwanda civil war was more recent and they have moved on.

And you will always hail anyone stroking the ego of Igbos as "telling the truth". Are Igbos prevented from contesting election? Did OBJ himself not defeat an Igbo to be PDP candidate in 1999? Why did he not step down for the Igbo man then if he feels strongly they are being "denied" the Presidency. Should he not have led by example when he had the chance?
