The number of Nigerian universities in the top 1,000 spots of the Times Higher Education (THE) world universities ranking has decreased for the third consecutive year.

In the 2024 rankings last year, two Nigerian universities –Covenant University, Ogun State and the University of Ibadan— made the top 1,000 spot. The year before in 2023, three universities –University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Covenant University – were in the top 1,000 spots.

In the latest ranking for 2025, however, only one Nigerian university, Covenant University, made the ranking. The private institution has consistently featured in the top 1,000 spots since 2019.

Top universities in Nigeria
Among Nigerian universities, Covenant is followed by Ahmadu Bello University, ranked between 1001–1200. Other Nigerian universities ranked between 1001-1200 are Landmark University, University of Ibadan, and University of Lagos. Bayero University, Federal University of Technology Akure, Federal University of Technology, Minna, University of Benin and the University of Ilorin are ranked in 1201–1500.

Global Ranking
Dangote Refinery
On the global stage, Oxford University maintains the number-one spot it has held for about a decade. “The institution’s performance has been bolstered by significant improvements in its income from industry and the number of patents that cite its research, as well as its teaching scores,” THE said in a statement announcing the rankings.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States (US) moved one step to emerge second as Harvard University, US, emerged third. MIT was in third place in the previous ranking.

Stanford University, however, fell from second place in the previous ranking to sixth place in the latest ranking, its lowest position since 2010.

Methodology
THE said on its website that the rankings are based on the three main missions of university activity: research, teaching and impact.

In calculating, THE said it used 18 “carefully calibrated performance indicators”. It added that the indicators are grouped into five areas Teaching (the learning environment); Research environment (volume, income and reputation); Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry (income and patents).

The Quality of Research takes 30 per cent of the points and the Research environment makes 29 per cent. Teaching makes up 29.5 per cent and International outlook takes 7.5 per cent. Meanwhile, a university’s ability to help industry with innovations, inventions and consultancy makes up 4 per cent of the points.

A Covenant University established in 2002 toppling a University of Ibadan of 1948 shows that nothing should be left to the government to manage in Nigeria.

I wonder what private universities like Igbenedion University and Madonna University that are older than Covenant University have been doing.

Does the British government own or manage Oxford? NO. It’s a private university. Same as Cambridge.

Same as other ‘top’ universities like Havard and Stanford in the US.

It is only in NIGERIA that we expect the govt to be everything and do everything.

The other day I learned that in the USA, not only are most rail networks and train stations owned by private operators, even the RAIL TRACKS are owned by private companies, and govt-owned networks like Amtrak need to pay them to use their rail tracks.

That’s why that country is super rich. The private sector is heavily involved in the development of the country.

Here in Nigeria?

Of course it’s the “government’s fault” that Nigeria has only one university in the Top 1000.

The private sector who should do their jobs by building world class universities are free of criticism.

Ridiculous country.

Not everyone expects gov’t to be everything and do everything! It’s the greedy central gov’t that wants to have its fingers in all the pies and be all controlling! There are some who prefer the status-quo to remain because they don’t have the confidence to manage their own region using their own resources…the unitary kind of gov’t Nigeria runs enables them not only to take a disproportionate share of federal resources and opportunities, but also enables them to sabotage and hold down the fortunes of those they see as the ‘competition’!

There are reasonable countries where the government runs a lot of successful corporations. For instance, Saudi Aramco is the world's richest oil corporation and it is owned by the government. Give it to the Nigerian government and watch politicians use its proceeds to settle their harlots.

The problem of this country is NOBODY (yes, it's in caps!) actually loves Nigeria. We've been living with this one Nigeria deceit since 1914. When a people love their country, there's no way their institutions and businesses won't thrive because they'll give their sweat and blood to protect and see them grow.

It’s a LIE.

Is Covenant university not private?

Did govt stop them?

What we need is for the PRIVATE SECTOR to step up to the plate, and start building WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITIES here in Nigeria.

Just like they’ve built a world class oil refinery via Dangote.

We have so many billionaires. They should use their money to build top class universities like their mates are doing elsewhere!!!!

You’re blissfully ignorant of what actually goes down in Nigeria! Either that, or you know but feign ignorance! It comes as no surprise that the continual decline in the ranking of UNN coincided with the emergence of APC in 2015!

We need to cut our government some slack sometimes.

Are we ready to pay for the quality education we so much desire? Is ASUU ready to align with the new economy and industry-centered curriculum that NUC and other stakeholders have advocated for? A lecturer fails to appear for his classes, ASUU arises and threatens to go on strike if disciplinary action is taken against such erring lecturer.

A student is denied a class of degree he or she merited and some other students and lecturer see it as normal. It gets worse when some of these students begin to condemn schools that award the appropriate classes of degree to deserving students. Some of these students tag these normal schools as being too easy failing to understand that they already started seeing and calling a misnormal what it isn't.

I had my first degree in UI, second in Unilag and currently in Covenant. The difference between the public schools and CU istratively is similar to the difference between light and darkness.

Lol. Africans and needless supremacy battles. Even if the top 10 schools are from Nigeria and we remain poverty capital of the world, what have gained?
Let personal brilliance translate into prosperity and result.

The main force driving CU is God through honest people. If left to the forces prevailing in UI and other public schools, CU will be a centre where angry lecturers get even with the elites by victimizing their children.

Convenant university cannot top any federal university in Nigeria, tell me how? These universities don't have lecturers, would you take employement with private in Nigeria as a professor? That is no no , most of their lecturers are gainfully employed with federal university....
papyjaypaul: 9:21pm On Oct 09, 2024
How many professors from the government universities did Covenant and other private universities use

How many doctors from the government hospitals do the best private hospitals use

There lies your answer.

Anyone that tells you don't blame the government but can clearly see that CU was founded in 2002 was definitely not born in the era of when Government-Owned universities were among the best in the world. That person will tell you not to blame government for anything, that the government of the past that provided fantastic education in this Nigeria can no longer do the same due to corruption is the one we should excuse. Poor attempt. Such a person has a poor knowledge of Nigeria's history and thinks we can forget that we once had a country. Government owned universities were among the best in the 50s to 70s. Nigerians went abroad to come back home. In fact, Nigerians rejected issions abroad because home was sweet and attractive to local and foreign. Foreigners schooled and taught here in Nigeria. You hear people talking about how Nigerian universities ed South Africans against apartheid, you think say na beans

Things started crumbling from the 80s and now the irresponsible people who have the opportunity to lead have allowed government owned universities to deteriorate while private ownership is the order of the day. Please don't get me started with such a lame attempt at wilful destruction.

I have other things to do but sycophants should not litter this forum and assume some people are not watching. Not all of us here are fools and don't know where we are coming from. Here is some education to read and know what happened. Government owned universities were that used to be part of the national development plan, now we are struggling to get Education's budget to UNESCO's requirement. Please don't insult our intelligence. Public good will always be better than private efforts. When they want to cite examples, they cite examples from capitalist systems that are working. When we cite examples of countries where government funds education because they know why they are in government, they find another excuse. What universities were Nigerians running away from when Russia Ukrain war started

Why don't you cite countries like Sweden, Norway where Government invests in public education

othermen: 5:51am On Oct 10, 2024
Compare the fundings received and available for the institutions. Even in Europe, government institutions funds excellent frontier research in private universities. Compare the investments. You would realize that the ROI in Nigerian federal universities are probably the best in the world.

No investment, no infrastructures, no incentives. Yet you find lecturers expend personal resource for research, publication and conferences. It’s not so in saner climes. Is it so in Covenant university? I don’t think.

ASUU basic needs are unmet. Thus, a drive and harvest of our very best minds from the federal universities. When covenant university head-hunt a professor from OAU, his academic history is part of the services they have harvested. It enriches them. It won’t get better.
