In the second quarter of 2024, Nigerian bonds experienced significant sell-offs as investors prioritized good governance over high yields. This shift reflects a broader change in risk appetite among global investors, particularly in emerging markets.

Key Highlights:

Bond Index Decline: The S&P/FMDQ Sovereign Bond Index dropped by 7.82%, falling from N593.86 billion in March 2024 to N547.61 billion by June 2024.
Governance Concerns: Investors’ worries about governance overshadowed the attractive returns from bonds, especially as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) raised the Monetary Policy Rate to a historic 26.25% to combat rising inflation, which hit 34.19% by the end of Q2.
Increased Borrowing: The Federal Government auctioned N1.23 trillion in bonds during Q2, leading to a temporary retracement in yields.
• Pension Fund Investments: Investments in Federal Government Securities rose by 6.22%, growing from N12.20 trillion to N12.96 trillion in the same period.

The second quarter of 2024 marked a volatile period for Nigerian bonds, driven by investor concerns over governance and the economic environment. While the Federal Government ramped up bond sales, the overall sentiment reflected a cautious approach among investors,
impacting bond performance.

Just like the little fall in dollar exchange rate that has failed to reflect in the price of goods and services?
When will the little fall reach Tinubu's NGN300/USD1 short term target

No one wants lies and deceits especially when the numbers aren’t even adding up. Everyday borrowing to fund a blurted government. In addition to excessive interest payment.
How long will this be sustained before there will be default?

======> Big problem ahead ======>

One big function of government is to sell HOPE! This government have done nothing but sell hopelessness!
If and when investor stops buying into whatever the government is selling, as they are already doing, then there will be a VERY big problem funding the government.

When a writer uses the words "suggest" or "reflect" in an article, take caution. The article is a personal opinion and not a matter of fact.

A wise man once said: I've never seen a country where its yesterdays are always better than its tomorrows, as is the case with Nigeria.

A little fall? Obviously, you know nothing about how the markets work. This is a serious issue, shows there are massive underlying problems.

They are cashing out big time and many probably have rebalanced their portfolio to take advantage of the first ever dollar denominated local bond.

Investors are in it for the money and Nigeria is doing great for them.
