Former Nigerian international Taribo West says Augustine Eguavoen possesses techniques but lacks grace, which is preventing him from achieving success with the Super Eagles.

Eguavoen, who also serves as the Nigeria Football Federation Technical Director, was handed the reins of the senior men’s national team after the deal with the proposed German coach, Bruno Labbadia, fell through.

This is the 59-year-old’s fourth stint in charge of the team, having previously managed the dugout from 2005 to 2007, in 2010, and again in 2022.

In his first stint, Eguavoen led the team to third place at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and despite winning all three group games at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, the team crashed out of the tournament in the round of 16 following a narrow defeat to Tunisia.

Eguavoen’s tenure has often been defined by near misses. Under his watch, the Eagles narrowly failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after crashing out on goal aggregate to Ghana. In his fourth and current spell, the team has started their 2025 AFCON qualifiers on a bright note, claiming four points from a possible six. But Taribo believes there is an element missing from Eguavoen’s coaching approach.

Speaking on Brila FM’s ‘No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze’, Taribo, founder of the Shelter in The Storm Miracle Ministry, said, “Anytime Eguavoen leads the team, he brings a certain touch, taking the team back to those glorious days.

“In major tournaments, where you expect them to cross the line, something always happens. What Eguavoen is lacking is only grace.”

While West acknowledged that Eguavoen’s tactical approach often brings out the best in the players, he stressed that results haven’t consistently followed.

“The team will play well, but the results won’t favour them,” said West.

He added, “I don’t see why we go for foreign coaches when we can invest more in our local coaches.”

Eguavoen, who recently denied stepping down as the interim coach of the team after the two 2025 AFCON qualifiers against the Benin Republic and Rwanda, is expected to remain in charge for their AFCON qualifying doubleheader against Libya in October.

Hmmm.

This kind of remarks can be demotivating for the Coach but I will advise him to ignore all the discouragement and work very hard to prove his opponents wrong. Most people will never appreciate you until they see concrete results from your efforts so you must be ready to be your own cheerleader and keep only quality people around you.

If I am in the position of Coach Eguavoen, I will just ignore this remark , work extremely hard and insulate my players from having the fear that they can't achieve anything great under my leadership. The contest first takes place in the mind before it's played on the pitch.

May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs!

Please, it's too early for all these childish contemptuous talks!!

Foreign coaches like Gernot Rohr, Jose Peseiro, etc. Don't lack grace but your fellow Skin does undecided. Most Blacks suffer from inferiority complex but normally, we would all pretend we don't know. A white man is leading the team, you would never hear shi from black men, well except it's a fellow Black sad...

Stephen Keshi of blessed memory still remains my favorite local coach of all time...

Eguavoen no too get luck together with Samson Siasia, for the super Eagles role its best the position be reserved for foreign tacticians until our local coaches step up their game to command respect from the players....

we need grace in this life to excel.

But you see for competitions? you need more than grace. You need preparation, intelligence, hardwork, tactics etc.

If na by just grace we for kuku appoint Pastor Enenche as our coach.

Taribo should be running a football academy.
He is by far the best defender out of this country.
The Rivers state or Bayelsa states government or the Nigerian Football Association should find a way to get him help coach the young ones.

They have started again. Useless people. Any time NFF gives one of them opportunity, others will start castigating him. Amokachi and Taribo always lead the attack on their colleagues. Very unfortunate

That's speaking from a pastoral perspective. Taribo West should focus on his church and leave our football coach alone.

This is a morale-damaging comment from Taribo.

&some "pastors" are guilty of this. Next, such pastors will make it look like only them can impart that grace on you.

That's how most of us humans reason. The moment Nigeria UNFAIRLY sacked Rohr and appointed Eguavon to manage the supper eagles at the Nations Cup. Like all Nigerians Eguavon was a man of grace when we won Egypt in our first match and playing so well to be the only country to earn 9 points in the group stage.

We were sent packing by a disorganized Tunisian team. Of course, Nigerians like Taribo begin change mouth.

When we recently won Benin nko, he was man of Grace but a draw with Ruwanda undecided

But the fact that he gets to be appointed as super eagles coach most of the time, it a lot of grace on it's own.

In MFM, this pattern of near misses when it matters most is labelled FAILURE AT THE EDGE OF BREAKTHROUGHS not a lack of grace.

Misleading headline. I was already wondering why Taribo would criticize a fellow teammate he had no known beef with in such a manner.

Obviously he meant that Eguavoen is missing the "spiritual grace" to take his team over the finish line even though they do well during qualifiers and all. It's the pastor in him that's talking.
