MelaninGemstone: To avoid stories that touch, no one should use all the money they have for investments. Your uncle should use like 10 to 20 percent of that 250M to do it. He shouldn't toy with his life savings oh. Greed no good. Between 25M to 50M is okay. Many have lost all from billions to poverty due to greed and putting everything they have into business investment 2 Likes |

dalass:High risk in MMF or you mean other mutual funds? Even our life is not guaranteed. We can die anytime but should we stop living? Of course, it is advisable that he spreads his investment. However, that business too has a lot of risks. For me, you can only lose your money if Nigeria stops existing. 1 Like |

noony926: I think you should your bank with a proposal in that regard. If it is viable/feasible they will want to invest. A merchant bank can also come handy here. In all be prepared to demonstrate how the money will come back if given. 1 Like 1 Share |

dalass: What would you have wanted the uncle to do? No doubt it's good to diversify as it engenders risks management in a way. At least some of amount invested in perceived risky areas like stock markets and equity fund may bring more returns and probably other amount invest in fixed income and MMF could be shock absorber too. But going fully for MMF should tell you that he a risk aversed person whose main objective is the return of his investment rather than the returns on his investment. Which is absolutely fine and the least risky thing to. So there is nothing to be afraid of there. Make uncle no go hustle for America finish then one idiot go come up in the name of investment come swindle him life savings. E go bad. So MMF is very ok. Maybe he can be to use his quarterly interest on MMF to start try out other viable investments when it's due. 3 Likes |

emmasoft: Could you please comment on the Ghana debt restructuring and Eurobond defaults. What does this even mean for individual investors like you and I? I hope Nigeria will not suffer a similar fate in the near future? Your thoughts |
emmaodet: 7:06am On Sep 19, 2024 |
Gvstavo: Hello Gustavo. See below explanation - Ghana's recent debt restructuring and Eurobond default have significant implications for individual investors holding these bonds. Here are some key points to consider: 1. **Haircut on Investments**: Investors are expected to take a nominal haircut of 37% on their Eurobond holdings². This means that the value of their investments will be reduced by this percentage. 2. **Interest Rate Changes**: The restructuring offers two payment instruments with different interest rates: one with an initial 5% interest rate and another with a 1.5% interest rate². Investors will need to choose between these options based on their risk tolerance and financial goals. 3. **Debt Relief and Economic Recovery**: The restructuring aims to provide significant cash flow and debt stock relief to Ghana's economic recovery¹. This could potentially stabilize the country's economy in the long run, which might positively impact the value of the restructured bonds. 4. **IMF Program**: The restructuring is part of a broader IMF-financed program aimed at bolstering Ghana's macroeconomic stability¹. This program includes measures to improve fiscal responsibility and investor confidence, which could benefit bondholders in the long term. 5. **Risk and Uncertainty**: Despite these measures, there is still inherent risk and uncertainty. The success of the restructuring depends on Ghana's ability to implement sustainable economic policies and maintain fiscal discipline¹. For individual investors, it's crucial to carefully review the of the restructuring and consider consulting with a financial advisor to understand the potential risks and benefits. Let’s break it down with a $10,000 bond investment: Haircut on Investment: If there’s a 37% haircut, the value of your $10,000 bond would be reduced by 37%. Calculation: $10,000 * 0.37 = $3,700. New bond value: $10,000 - $3,700 = $6,300. Interest Rate Changes: Suppose you choose the option with an initial 5% interest rate. Annual interest earned: $6,300 * 0.05 = $315. Alternatively, if you choose the option with a 1.5% interest rate: Annual interest earned: $6,300 * 0.015 = $94.50. Long-term Considerations: The restructuring aims to stabilize Ghana’s economy, which could potentially improve the bond’s value over time. However, there’s still risk and uncertainty, so it’s important to monitor the situation and consider consulting with a financial advisor. 1 Like |
