The Lagos State Government has approved Yoruba Language as a subject for testing the knowledge and thinking ability of Pupils sitting for the Placement Test by Continuous Assessment Scores CAS) in the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, made the disclosure while speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Conference Room of the Ministry in Alausa, Lagos.

The permanent secretary noted that the study of Yoruba Language is already embedded in the Education Curriculum of the State, adding that primary six pupils transiting to Government Public Junior Secondary Schools would be tested in Yoruba Language in the Year 2025 placement test by Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS).

In a statement by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Examinations Board,Bakare Fatai said the permanent secretary stressed the need for encouraging the teaching and learning of Yoruba as an indigenous language in schools, pointing out that this would add value to the culture and total ways of life of the people.

According to himi, the new policy was the outcome of a consensus reached by stakeholders including the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in the State, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools ( NAPPS), Conference of Private Schools Association in Lagos ( COSPAIL), Curriculum Services Department of the Ministry, Lagos State Examinations Board, Association of Christians International, Egbe Akomolede ati Asa Yoruba, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) and Basic Education Services Department of the Ministry.

He also noted that UNESCO had adopted the Motion/Policy of using the child’s language environment in schools until the child gets to primary three in his/her education career to strengthen the teaching and learning of the child’s indigenous language.

Abolaji assured stakeholders of the state government’s commitment to addressing the problems associated with the teaching and learning of Yoruba language so that the language could be taught and learnt with ease.

The permanent secretary also revealed that for the Year 2025 Placement Test by CAS, Pupils would be tested on Mathematics and Language, pointing out that Mathematics would comprise Quantitative Reasoning and Primary Science while Language would comprise English Studies, Yoruba Language, Verbal Reasoning and General Paper.

Now all non-Yoruba kids living in Lagos must learn Yoruba and be tested in an exam to evaluate them.

Sanwoolu took Lagos is no man’s land delusion by those guys to another level.

From official point of view, the English language is Nigeria's lingual franca. Imagine if the children of Lagos are now being subjected into rhe same harsh treatment by other 370+ ethnic groups across Nigeria?

So Lagos is your template for one Nigeria? Is Igbo not required by student in South East states? So why must Yorubaland own be different?

Anambra is so clannish they openly call for state recruitment of only Anambra indigenes but you’re here preaching to Lagos on how to govern because of one Nigeria.

The thing is we dont want our Language to perish

There's a Tsunami coming from the Indian ocean and its sweeping effect is so strong that peoples culture are being washed down the drain so easily. We dont want that here

This language should survive the next 1000years and we hope to Acculturate every single non-Yoruba person into the culture

Take our names, learn our language

Making a typo error while texing in a foreign language is the hallmark of illiteracy?

That means every non-speaker of English language is automatically an illiterate

Is that what you mean? cheesy cheesy

I guess we now know those that went through a terrible Educational system

Not all kids are students.

The directive is not for every child.

Secondly, it's for primary 6 pupils going to government secondary school.

This is quite funny. A whole lot of Igbo people learnt yoruba language years ago before these funny power grabbers came to be. We learnt it because it helped us in our businesses and communicating better not because any bigot or power grabber persuaded us to.

Even before I came to Lagos, some of my kinsmen when they come back for xmas, speak Yoruba fluently in the vliiage. Trust me Igbo kids will speak both Yoruba and Igbo fluently, obviously having advantage anywhere amongst their pars. They will always excel EVEN in Lagos.

Thank God also this is limited to the dilapidated low standard, low quality Public schools. Private Schools to the rescue for other non speaking Yorubas.

Imagine an Indian, German, American or Hausa child being told to speak Yoruba before they will access education in a state the Lingual Franca is English, they will dump the already shitty public schools for quality education in Private Schools

Private schools to the rescue. Shitty Public schools for Shukura, Ayomide, Basira, Oluti, Rukka etc.

That’s what we want. Yorubanize them so they can think differently from people of the places they came from and assimilate properly, respect the tradition, and eschew bitterness.

This is applicable to all non-Yoruba ethnics, whether Hausa, Ibo, Fulani, Ijaw, or etc.

The superior culture must be taught to the kids so they can start “thinking in Yoruba” at their early stage so we won’t have people with bitterness for Yoruba amongst us in their numbers.

This is a flex to the individuals involved but it doesnt help the tribes/ethnic groups they come from

Why do colonial masters care more about forcing you to speak their Language?

It helps preserve theirs and also help swallow yours

I would rather have the whole country to be Yorubanize than vice versa

I think we have 250 languages in nigeria?
I think we heard National conference and sovereign National conference?.
All of us must be careful in this Nigeria because Lagos population is 70% strangers.
If you people want to quietly divide this country,we are 100%ready and waiting for you people. This New imposition of another language to people with another language is anty people. And also a bad move to deny people their human rights...

I speak Yoruba fluently, I know ur culture but it doesnt dilute one once of my Igbo blood. If you are conversant with events in Lagos, You would have noticed that a lot of Igbo people in Lagos speak Yoruba fluently. It is even a great advantage. Lol.
