One of the major differences in societies in Africa and The West is that the people in the latter always hold their government responsible, and whenever their government enacts a law that will bring hardship to them, the people will collectively come together and demand a change. Currently, the Israelis are demanding that their government cut a deal with Palestine, bring home the hostages and end the war - this has resulted into a general strike in the country.

When I stumbled on the news yesterday that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company will be the sole buyer of the Dangote refinery product and then later resell to independent marketers, I realized that the Nigerian populace are not ready to change their realities. The leaders of Nigeria are visibly hell-bent on making life less enjoyable or their citizens.

Petrol as we most foundly call it in Nigeria is arguably the singular product that has an instant knock-down or push-up effect on every other commodity in Nigeria. And while Dangote was constructing its 650,000 refinery capacity, scores of millions of Nigeria were looking forward to a lowered price of petrol since the initial reason for the high price was that it was imported and bought in US Dollars and understanding that Dangote refinery is Nigerian and would not need the US Dollars, we expected a price drop. However, with the NNPC stepping in to become the sole buyer of Dangote petrol product, it is obvious that having the sixth largest petrol refinery in the world inside Nigeria will not make the price of the commodity to be cheaper.

Do you think that NNPC becoming the sole buyer of Dangote's petrol is an economic sabotage move against Nigerians? Should Dangote Refinery be responsible for selling its petrol products directly to whoever is interested?

The NNPC is buying the product so as to regulate the price of petrol in the country.

It's a nice move

Petrol is a base denominator product in Nigeria, why is the NNPC regulating the price and not the forces of demand and supply?! undecided

It is a bad idea because with Nigeria having the 10th largest oil and gas reserve in the world, the country should not be suffering! Have you listened to the people? Would they prefer to buy the petrol at 350/litre or at 1000/litre?

Subsidy

Nigeria has the 10th largest oil and gas reserve in the world, and the 6th largest private refinery while the state government also have 4 refineries across the country, why should the government be paying subsidies when all the products are local?

Okay, the reason is that when NNPC becomes the sole buyer of petrol from Dangote, then NNPC instead of demand and supply would determine the price of the commodity, which in-turn undermines the presence of the world's 6th largest refinery in a country with the 10th largest oil and gas reserve.

Now, you tell me why it is not a bad idea. Your turn.

You make some valid points. However, we should also consider that the government is trying to stabilize the market.

Don't be stupid, Tinubu said he removed fuel subsidy which means the price should be determined by the force of demand and supply, what business does NNPC has with that? They are only doing that because Subsidy is really back, the landing cost of petrol is over 1000 so they'd buy at 1000 and sell to suppliers at below 600 which means for every 1 litre of fuel you're using in Nigeria Government are subsidising it with at least 400 while maintaining the lies that subsidy is gone! The reason it's bad is because NNPC will continue it's subsidy scam running into trillions of Nigeria while your president is shameless enough to broadcast recently that there's nothing like subsidy, he's confused and not bold enough to it that he's failed on his number one promise of removing fuel subsidy.

It would have made sense if the Government agreed that fuel subsidy is back, there was no single Kobo budgeted for fuel subsidy, where is the money coming from? How much are they spending on subsidy monthly? Without all these the subsidy regime continue to be shrouded in secrecy which is nothing else but promoting corruption in large scale, you know this but your head is not working well, that's why you're defending corruption.

He made no point until I interrogated him.

If people cannot give clear reasons for something, it means being sentimental rather than logical.

What is my stance?

Is it that the educational standard in Nigeria is so poor that people cannot even understand why statements need to be x-rayed.

Our problem in this country is not lack of refinery coz Dangote has proved them wrong, but leaders.

I don't care either NNPC or marketers will be selling it to me directly to my car as long as it will be sold not above 100

The NNPC is not buying out Dangote's petrol. This is a huge misunderstanding of the market dynamics and the role of NNPC. The NNPC will only buy from Dangote and sell to the marketers, that's the essence of the petroleum subsidy removal.

Why is the NNPC involved with Dangote? Why can't they fix their own 4 refineries and let demand and supply determine how much Dangote sells?
