Why Japa Is Not The Answer To Nigeria’s Problems (1383 Views)

I’ve read several posts made by many defeatists advising Nigerians especially the youths to run away (Japa) from Nigeria, telling them that the only way they can live a decent life is to migrate to other countries, I wonder how a great nation and people like Nigerians have allowed themselves to be defeated, so docile and cowardly to the point that their children are now only thought to hate their father’s land and prepped to leave the country at early stages of their lives to become “slaves” in other countries in the name of japa syndrome?

Nigeria remains the best West African country with so much potential…. It is unfortunate that the japa syndrome has become a culture in many parts of country to a point that it is on the verge of destroying what is left of the future of this country as many of our best brains continue to leave in mass…. This country was founded on the basis of mutual respect and ethnic synergy, our founding fathers believed in the power of our diversity this unfortunately became the bane of our development as overtime Nigerians allowed tribalism, corruption to reign supreme ushering in the worst set of people among them to rule, loot and destroy the country. Instead of uniting to take back the country, many Nigerians today prefer to runaway and live as third class citizens in foreign lands with the hope that Nigeria will magically fix itself before they can return…. If the citizens of the foreign countries that Nigerians are running to and currently living in did the same thing by “japaing” when their country’s situation was bad, would any of us “japa” to their country today? The answer is “NO”…. It is a fact the no one can fix Nigeria except Nigerians and what is happening today, especially the new culture of japa among our youths is a betrayal to our heritage, our founding fathers, those who fought and died for the course of this nation and our forefathers who fought the colonialists to ensure that future generations of this country can live free and be prosperous…. We may run to UK, USA or over the economic crisis in Nigeria, change our native names but we can not change our Nigerian DNA or the blood of our ancestors that is within us. Many people are saying that Nigeria is dead and there is no hope for our youths, this is not true as the major reason why it seem to be hopeless is because of the lack of unity among Nigerians, many of us choose to foster deep tribal hatred and religious extremism towards other Nigerians, for some, it is a politically motivated choice while for others it is a sentimental choice… this dangerous way of thinking have brought this country to it’s knees as corruption and bad governance continues to thrive…. The truth is that Nigerians have a choice to fix their country if they choose to let go of these vices that divide them, making this country work for all Nigerians is achievable when the majority of us are willing to love our country and fight for the best for her…. What it takes is genuine patriotism which is lacking and this is why our people continue to suffer…. Just like the great patriots who fought to make America, UK and other countries we love to run to what it is today…. We have a nation blessed with abundant resources if harnessed and managed properly none of us will find these foreign countries attractive as life will be good in Nigeria…. Already, you can see many foreigners like the Chinese milking some of our resources illegally are living large in Nigeria while our people cry of hunger. There is no other way we can guarantee wealth and prosperity for ourselves without fixing our country, Nigerian youths should understand that the fate of this country is in their hands and what they choose to do will shape the fate of future generations…. These bad leaders we have today are in power because Nigerians especially our youths failed to hold them able, instead of fighting for a better future, our people have been robbed of their identities, defeated and brainwashed to accept “japa” as an achievement, a salvation to their failures…. Why live as slaves in foreign lands doing menial jobs when you can live as kings in your father’s land if we unite to fix our country by chasing away these evil politicians destroying it…. Nigerians are better off living in a prosperous Nigeria then living as slaves in another man’s country…. All that is required is for us to stand together, take our country back and fight for a better future that will benefit everyone…. If the people of USA, UK, Canada and other advanced countries did it, we can do it…. The Nigeria of today and tomorrow is in our hands to shape….

This post makes me YEARN to smack you silly.

First for the ABSOLUTELY stupid nature of its contents. Then for your FAILURE to employ something as important as a PARAGRAPH.

Back to the post:

You keep yapping and yapping about being "slaves and third class citizens" in a foreign country. EVERYBODY knows this is an 80s argument.

Getting VISAs is not as simple as it once was. Current immigration policies DEMAND that you have a clear and definite purpose before you are granted a Visa.

For MOST people, that either takes the form of STUDY or WORK. Both of these require sponsorships from institutions or employers who believe in you.

Nigerians abroad WORK to improve themselves either through local certifications or educations. But while working towards their education or certification, they make take some "menial jobs" like driving for UberEats or waiting tables.

Which brings me to your point about shitting on menial jobs. That is CLASSISM. Your post shows that you DISREGARD and look down on people who do jobs you consider "menial".

Meanwhile, they are considered an integral part of the country they reside in. For context, the average income of a waiter in the US Is about $31K and that's not including the tips they get.

The point is most "menial jobs" abroad is SUFFICIENT to live a decent life, unlike in Nigeria. That is why ONLY about 35% of Americans have a Bachelor's Degree.

I suppose your "third-class citizen" also alludes to the RACISM that Nigerians face abroad. That is LAUGHABLE.

Nigerians at home have to deal with TRIBALISM which is even dumber than racism. As a Nigerian abroad, you may need to cross the racism hurdle to get a good job.

But Nigerians in Nigeria have to deal with TRIBALISM, NEPOTISM, FAVOURITISM, CORRUPTION and FAKE job postings by RITUALISTS and RAPISTS to get a good job.

We have seen reports of Nigerian-born black people in position of political authority in foreign countries. Let someone from a different TRIBE try to become the VC of a common state-owned University in Nigeria and all hell would break loose. grin

Another aspect of your "third-class citizen" probably relates to Police treatment of black people. But it's NO different from the way Nigerian Police and other security agencies treat Nigerians.

Police could GUN you down because of #200 in Nigeria. Nothing will happen. Your family can't sue anyone for SETTLEMENT which is something that can be done abroad apart from the personal consequences the offending officer would have to face.

By the way, I like the fact that you mentioned that Nigeria is the best country in WEST Africa. You knew better than to say Africa. cheesy

But even that is PUSHING it. We all saw how Nigerian citizens in Ogun State had to cross over to Benin Republic to get access to POTABLE water.

In ONE day, we've read news of a KIDNAPPED commissioner and TWENTY kidnapped medical/dental students.

But that's not even the worst part. You want to know what the worst part is?

The worst part is that people DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO TO CALL! People are helpless in the face of a BRUTAL security threat because there is no DESIGNATED and RELIABLE number to call in case of an emergency.

Emergency call in Nigeria does NOT exceed screams of "egbaami ooo" and "ewoooo ooo". That's it.

The summary is this:

It is EASIER to be patriotic when you don't feel like there is a LOADED gun to your head.

It is EASIER to be patriotic when you don't feel like something is CONSTANTLY choking you.

It is EASIER to be patriotic when you don't feel like the system is actively working AGAINST you.

That is why people JAPA!

Life is too SHORT to be blindly loyal to a society that SUFFOCATES you.

Flight attendants tell people to put on their own oxygen mask FIRST before trying to assist ANYONE else in an emergency. Even your own CHILDREN!

That is because you don't run to put out a fire in your neighbour's house when your OWN leg is still ROASTING like suya.

Advice to anyone reading this:

If you can AFFORD it, JAPA! Bleep patriotism and JAPA!

Not sure who you are referring to but even if so many have “japa” there is no way over 200 million people can run away from their country…. Majority of Nigerians have no choice than to fix their country…. These evil politicians occupying public offices oppressing Nigerians are not more than 1000 people….

Not every one of 200 million Nigerians want to fix their country. Many more would rather become these so called "evil politicians occupying public offices oppressing Nigerian". And to think they "are not more than 1000 people" just shows you don't understand the extent of our problem. After all, millions of us elected those 1000.

I'd say it is our 200 million Nigerians that need to be fixed for our country to be fixed. From the civil servant who collects a bribe to do their job, to the streetwalker who throws rubbish on the street, and the fool who ignorantly votes emilokan or tribe or religion instead of policies and credibility.

We create our unfixed Nigeria, and once we stop unfixing Nigeria, Nigeria will begin to be fixed. We must start by fixing the brain in our heads, and that, the search for a good education, is a reason to japa, in my opinion.

Tinubu evil government can end today if Nigerians want it to end…. Everything bad happening in Nigeria is because the people allowed it to happen…. Once Nigerians stand together against these tyrants then Nigeria will move forward….

This is a social network and I do not need to write with paragraphs as I am not writing a PHD or Masters degree thesis…..

In reply to your post, there is no country without challenges and there is no perfect economy as far as I know…. Every nation was built by the genuine efforts of its people… your long epistle reeks of cowardice, a clear attempt to demarket the country and divert attention from the real issue…. I will ask again if the citizens of the foreign countries that you are advising Nigerians to japa to decided to run away and not stay back to fix their countries when situation was bad I do not think you or anyone will go to these countries…. It is not by accident that these countries are advanced, it is the hard work, patriotic actions and deliberate sacrifices made by the people…. You should be advising Nigerian youths to let go of stupid tribal sentimental biases and without fear hold the leaders able, all the problems you highlighted in your posts are solvable if Nigerians have leaders that are competent.… Those traveling for the sake of education if they did not get a solid educational foundation in Nigerian schools to read and write how would they be able to pursue or advance their education qualifications abroad….? As I said earlier japa is not a sustainable strategy to fix Nigeria’s problems as everyone can not run away from this country…. Nigerians should stop this defeatist agenda of running away from the country and instead stay back to build just like how people in those countries did to be where they are today…..

I do believe in this quote by Samuel Adams

“It does not take a majority to prevail… but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brush fires of freedom in the minds of men.”

Nigeria will be saved not by the majority but the patriotic fearless tireless minorities who will do whatever it takes to stand against injustice and bad governance….

Well, that minority will need to be a significant fearless few to stand up to the majority who perpetuate the injustice and bad governance. And I strongly believe that day is nigh, though it may be after worse days than today and after many have died of the hunger and starvation that injustice and bad governance enables and promotes.

What is the long term benefit? So you succeed to japa with your family then once you start working in the foreign country, you will still need to bear the consequences of Nigeria’s bad government and economy you ran away from by contributing on a weekly or monthly basis for your relatives or parents you left behind by sending part of the little money you make over there back to Nigeria for them…. Imagine if Nigeria’s economy was great and these bad leaders are forced out by the people…. We finally build a nation that works for everyone…. Even if you decide to migrate to another country, you will not feel any burden of fending for your relatives you left back home, they won’t be a liability as everyone will be able to earn and live decent life in Nigeria without depending on you…. The fact is that both Nigerians outside and within Nigeria will benefit if this country’s economy is good…. The first step towards solving Nigeria’s problems is ensuring that people of questionable characters do not occupy public offices and if they succeed then it is the responsibility of the people to push for their removal from office…. This is what our people should stand together against and fight to take back our country instead of running away from the country….

Yeye Dey smell… patriotic my a$$

Those who are part of decision makers and who run the affair of this country aren’t patriotic, it’s me that will be patriotic.

If they are patriotic they won’t be stealing our common wealth and put masses in a hopeless situation

Patriotic to a country with failed government that has no plan for me and my kids. A country where dreams are being killed because it’s run by useless politicians who don’t care about the masses but themselves .

I have got just one life to live, I want to live it to the fullest with no regrets by the grace of God.

Like I always said. Those of us who can’t bear the heat of that failed country run by useless government have left that country.

I won’t fold my arms and let some useless politicians mess up this one life that I have. While these politicians are living comfortable.

E go better, e go better that’s what some people are still hoping for. They are already 40,50 years of age with nothing tangible to show for it.

Are these people lazy? No. People with great potentials but that failed country run by useless government mess up their lives.

Buhari wasted 8 years of masses life, all in the name of give him time. He is BABA GO SLOW. What did we get ? Nothing..

Come to sane country and see how you will start to unleash your hidden potentials and you'd be surprise what you’re capable of.

Why are you trying to derail this thread discussion? Nigerians don't need Osinbajo as he was part of the government that destroyed the country's economy.... when Buhari singlehandedly removed chief justice Walter Onnoghen in a ploy to subvert the law what did Osinbajo do or say about it....? Nigeria failed Nigerians not mainly because of the useless leaders but the nonchalant selfishness and extreme tribalism of the people…. The same selfish mentality that you’re displaying here in your post is why there is little or no national progress since 1999…. It is the responsibility of all Nigerians to hold politicians occupying public offices able if we fail as a people to uphold our rights then we have no one to blame for current dire consequences we are facing due to our nonchalance and selfish actions towards nation building…. You don’t expect leaders to be patriotic if you as a citizen is not patriotic, you run to countries where its citizens are patriotic and are always ready to hold their government able since you do not want to do the same or build your own country…. No country can develop without sacrifices made by its people…. You and a few other Nigerian may get the opportunity to “japa” from Nigeria but many others won’t and can’t leave…. Nigerians will continue to go round in cycles over bad leadership and failed policies until we understand that the only way we can truly thrive as a nation is when we as a people unite and let go of hateful tribalistic sentiments, selfishness and religious resentments towards each other…. The truth is that Nigerians must be ready to fight for their freedom, we must be ready to demand good governance without fear or prejudices no matter what it takes…. There is no other way as this is the only sustainable way to ensure we have a country that works and benefits everyone…. Just as someone pointed out in this thread that “Japa” is a luxury, mainly those who are rich or comfortable in Nigeria can afford to migrate easily. Japa is not and will never solve our national problems….

I am not saying that migration is bad… I am only saying that it is wrong to push the malicious narrative to our people especially the youths that they have no other way to live a decent life than to runaway from their country…. This is not true because Nigeria is a blessed nation and only needs to have the right people in positions of authority to ensure that Nigerians enjoy the country’s wealth…. This can be achieved if we encourage our people to stay back and work towards building the country instead of running away…. These evil people in power will be forced out if our youths are encouraged to rally together and demand for an end to the carnage and injustice going on in Nigeria…. It is glaring that the “Japa” ideology is increasing crime in Nigeria as many people are desperate to engage in criminal activities to raise funds to leave the country…. It is setting a dangerous precedence that will destroy the people…..

HellVictorinho8:
