Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has openly backed the nationwide hardship protest slated to start on August 1, 2024.

He assured peaceful citizens of his and vowed to personally receive demonstrators at the Government House on Thursday.

At a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf emphasised the democratic right of Nigerians to protest but urged the youth to conduct their demonstrations peacefully.

“For us, protest is a democratic right of every citizen. I want the protesters to carry out their procession with caution, as some criminal elements plan to hijack the protest. If you embark on a peaceful procession, I will receive you, and if you wish, I’ll you.”

The governor’s for the protest comes amid growing concerns over the role of security agencies in handling civil unrest. Governor Yusuf expressed frustration with the Nigeria Police Force, accusing them of insubordination and failure to follow directives of the state government.

“I can’t understand why the security agencies, especially the police, will not obey our orders,” he said. “When we tell them to do this or that, they will tell us they received an order from ‘above.’ Who is the ‘above’? I am the chief security officer in the state. If you have a problem with that, go and change the Nigerian constitution.”

As the protest looms, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has also weighed in, urging the government to take concrete steps to alleviate the economic difficulties faced by the people. “We must find proper ways to help the needy and ensure that what is given to them reaches them,” the Emir remarked during the meeting.

The protest has sparked a debate among various groups, with some ing the action as a means to address the country’s economic challenges, while others advocate dialogue to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Right from the beginning it is only politics of bitterness that they always use the man for. I when they posted him to Kwara state before 2019 election to make sure Saraki doesn't return to Senate. So no be today.

Every sensible person right now would do the same... I'm always baffled when I see people saying the northerners didn't protest during the regime of Buhari but they seem to forget that Buhari's regime wasn't as bad as what we have now......... Common man can't even walk into any restaurant with his last #500 and eat a meal again angry

I wasn't in of the protest initially but right now, I'm in full of it....

Na wa o! This governor just found a new hobby. Instead of fixing the issues, he’s busy backing protests like it's a new trend. What next? A protest for protest’s sake?

That Tinubu could not win the presidential election in Lagos that he governed for 8 years and has been installing Governors since 2007 till date is a testimony to the fact that even as Governor, Bola Tinubu was a monumental failure. Lagos was in the mud until Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN became Governor in 2007 and began the clean up and infrastructural developments we have in Lagos today. I give it to Tinubu that he is good in politics but he is very poor in governance. His idea of governance is settlement, just as he is trying to use rice to settle people protesting for hunger, it is typically Tinubu style in Lagos. I was surprised how during last election, all the achievements of Fashola, Ambode and Sanwo Olu were ed together and made to look like Tinubu's. They used propaganda to sell the man without knowing that propaganda has an expiry date, Tinubu's propaganda has expired, hunger has woken everyone from slumber

Abba Yusuf should focus on governance instead of encouraging protests.

Protests won't solve the hardship issue; they just create more chaos.

It's funny how politicians like him quickly jump on the protest bandwagon when it's convenient.

Instead of backing protests, he should be working on real solutions for the people suffering in Kano.

Protests are not the answer; they only distract from the real problems at hand. Let's see some action, not just words.
