IbeOkehie: What has government involvement and intervention have to do with refineries degradation . That occurred due to typical lack of foresight with your leaders and corruption . If your population is not in check and you do not produce more than you spend or provide jobs for your growing population you get Nigeria . This is logic. Look to china or places like Canada that are not having enough children to help with social security funding and with baby boomers retiring 1 Like |

rickleye: Come on dear sir!!! You really can't be asking this question. What kind of thing is this? As at the 1970s Nigeria had several cement companies. All were 100 % owned or majority owned by government. Nkalagu Cement, CCNC in Sokoto, Benue Cement, WAPCO. Yet up to 1999, Nigeria was still dependent on cement imports. Cement scarcity was a real thing just like petrol scarcity. Starting in 2003 or so, the Government sold off almost all cement companies to private investors. Within 10 years, Nigeria became self sufficient in cement and also an exporter of cement. This happened in our lifetime. Bonus information - the ONLY one of the old cement companies NOT producing anything today is Nkalagu Cement. The Ebonyi State Government refused to hand it over to Ibeto Cement Company even when they had paid the full negotiated price. Anyone can simply peruse the internet for reputable sources of info and confirm what I've written above. Now if that doesn't impress, the recent history of the crude oil industry in Venezuela can definitely point to the answers. Hopefully you can understand why Nigerian oil refineries are largely dormant 🙂 Na wa o. Nigerians, PLEASE get enlightened. Good Luck to Nigeria |

jaxxy: Most Nigerians have this same delusional thinking. You guys are pitiful but it's important that someone tell you the truth. The Nigerian Government has been paying fuel subsidies since 1973. In the USA and most of Western Europe consumers pay full price PLUS TAX for fuel. The average annual cost of educating a University graduate in a Federal University is $3,000 and most of that is paid by the Federal Government. The average Federal University student in Nigeria pays less than $100 or some ridiculous amount. In the USA students pay much, much higher tuition and fees. Just go to any USA university website and check. You mentioned water. For your information 20% of USA homes dig their own wells for their own water. I actually looked up that data, it's accurate. Yes, 20% of household water in the USA is NOT supplied by any water company public or private. In my own home I pay over $150 per month to the city for water. And how many Nigerians pay income taxes? Wanna discuss that? In fact Nigerians make fun of those abroad who have to pay taxes. Dear Sir please stop all this. Nigerians need to grow up. Government isn't Daddy or Mummy, it's not meant to supply your consumer needs. Good Luck to Nigerians |

IbeOkehie: Nigerians pay income tax if u work with a cooperate organisation or bulechip. I paid income tax.. We don't have power u forgot to add that which is the most important thing for business to survive and make profits. I still stand on the fact that if Nigerians are provided with the amenities and systems in the US we will do better. Most Nigerians who relocate to the US do far better than when they were in Nigeria despite pay taxes. My position is valid. |
IbeOkehie: 6:49pm On Jul 31, 2024 |
jaxxy: Your position is not valid. The USA became an economic giant by operating a classical free market economy. After the USA became rich, it started engaging in socialist spending such as subsidies. Even then, the CONSTITUTION of the United States still provides for and protects PROPERTY RIGHTS, an essential element of economics that encourages investment. Nigeria has zero property rights so most productive investors avoid investing in Nigeria, which explains Nigeria's low productivity. The USA is the producer of USD, the dollar currency. Yet the US government does not set prices or regulate the price of the dollar. It's Nigeria that actually tries to set the price of a currency it doesn't produce, Nigeria actually subsidizes the availability of dollars in Nigeria by fixing naira value for dollar. Absolutely stupid policy. Meaning, Nigeria regulates the price of capital. Another major reason Nigeria isn't productive. On tax, I asked HOW MANY Nigerians pay income tax!!!! That's the issue, how MANY, the PREVALENCE of tax compliance. FIRS runs adverts begging Nigerians to pay tax, I've seen those adverts. Next, how much do Nigerians earn? The last reputable survey I've seen, extrapolated to current conditions likely means that less than 0.5% of Nigerians earn over ₦500K per month. How much is that...to wit, there's not even a lot of income available to tax. Do you earn over ₦500K per month? You're one of a very few lucky Nigerians. THE SOLUTION to the Nigerian Crisis lies in adopting free market principles, which will increase income and create wealth for the government to tax. Then the government can use the revenue to start playing socialist politics. ![]() I already gave the major solutions - 1.) sell off all government companies to private investors 2.) Privatize ownership of land. 3.) Deregulate ALL prices including forex, labour, education and healthcare. 4) Allow States to become more autonomous, delegate more power from the federal government to the states and LGAs. States should even have power over residency, voting rights and police. 5) Abolish all tariffs and controls on imports and exports of legal products 6)Abolish ALL income and property tax and replace with flat VAT or sales tax capped at 10%. If there must be an income tax let it be 1% on the top 1% of earners. 7) Constitutional Amendments that make goverment jobs & political offices unattractive. One I hit on is to make it illegal for the family anyone who serves in government in any capacity to live or own property outside their native state. I'm sure there can be many others. Make new laws and even Constitutional Amendment to impose all the above basic conditions. It doesn't have to the exact outline above but the intent is clear - FREEDOM for the people of Nigeria. This is the solution. The problem is Nigerians will never any government that tries to make it happen. So they will continue to suffer this artificial poverty. Most Nigerians have no idea of economic principles. Vast majority of Nigerian graduates have the intellect of a cement block. That's why the country is the Poverty Capital of the World, it's logical. Go open an economics text, peruse the internet and get educated on economics. Good Luck to Nigeria. |

IbeOkehie: I'm so sorry to say as much as what u said make sense in a normal or sensible forward thinking and progressive country, Nigeria in question is not one or even close to America in any of its economic era. For 1 America was not ruled by kleptomanics and fantastically corrupt leaders, America an aby of its economic era built systems that they developed and created to grow and function independently. America didn't happen by luck or chance but deliberate will to learn and do the right thing. That was how they built the democratic system of government and and became an economic giant. Nigeria even in the next 200 years with thus set of criminally corrupt leaders will never be even half of America. Even these current ones doing copy and paste economics and polices whole stealing and looting are all deceiving themselves. Nigerians have tried and endured nonsense for more than 60 years building no systems and going in circles or corrupt and incompetence misfit leaders and u are comparing that to Americans? U comparing onions to Apples. The difference is crystal clear. 1 Like |

jaxxy: The politicians that govern the USA are no more honest or corrupt than Nigerian politicians. They have exactly the same morals, they are human. The difference is the BASIC LAWS and the evolved CULTURE of each nation. Read about this USA kleptomaniac, do a deep dive and see real corruption that no Nigerian politician can dream of fomenting.... https://www.google.com/search?q=speaker+madigan&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS1037US1037&oq=speaker+madigan&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqCggAEAAY4wIYgAQyCggAEAAY4wIYgAQyBwgBEC4YgAQyCAgCEAAYFhgeMggIAxAAGBYYHjIICAQQABgWGB4yCAgFEAAYFhgeMggIBhAAGBYYHjINCAcQABiGAxiABBiKBTIKCAgQABiiBBiJBTIKCAkQABiABBiiBNIBCDI4NDhqMGo0qAIAsAIB&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 I've repeatedly mentioned how Nigeria was dependent on CEMENT importation how cement was scarce DESPITE the presence of so many government owned cement factories. Around 2003 or 2005, the government of Olusegun Obasanjo implemented a policy of privatization & deregulation prices The result is crystal clear, to use your own descriptor....Nigeria is self sufficient in cement and even has become an EXPORTER of the commodity. This is too simple, that it's so hard for most university educated Nigerians to accept explains a lot of the Nigeria Crisis. Let me make it clear - GOVERNMENT OWNERSHIP DESTROYS PRODUCTIVITY, GOVERNMENT REGULATION OF PRICES DESTROYS INCENTIVES TO INVEST & OPERATE. PRIVATE OWNERSHIP PROMOTES PRODUCTIVITY, FREE MARKET PRICING ENCOURAGES INVESTMENT AND OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY. In the USA that you cite as an ideal, the government doesn't own any factories, it's a rarity. Even NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS are privately owned. That's the real reason for USA prosperity - private capitalism & free markets. That's all and if Nigeria implements such a system the results will be the same. The problem is the majority of Nigerians are exactly like YOU, you're all ideologically opposed to capitalism, private property and free markets. You like to PRETEND you like free markets but cite every excuse NOT to adopt such an economic system Here's some news that is real and predictable - so long as Nigeria continues to operate the present socialist system, it will continue to be poor. On the other hand, the USA is adopting more socialist policies and culture and is becoming poorer. Very predictable, no surprise to me. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |

IbeOkehie: Sorry but I do not pretend to like free markets nor do I look for excuses to oppose such economic systems. It seems u haven't been understanding my point or reading it to respond. Even by ur own ission u said US politicians are no different from Nigeria's which I have always said in some other discussions, I have never said one these ones are superhuman or saints and the other are more corrupt by default. I said the US built systems that can function independently and these systems includes laws and policies which guide various establishments are they are built to be effective. This is why the US was able to achieve prosperity. But u are telling me whe should adopt such oe same free market economic systems while we don't build any strong systems or rule of law and I am telling u it won't work. The results will never be thesame or at best be temporary. Cement industry survived privatisation majorly because of the tenacity of dangote and very few major players. Thst is not thesame for Nepa that's has been in comatose state despite deregulation. The investors also want to get their ROI back as quickly as the telecoms industry which is not possible because there are many power and distribution infrastructure lacking and it a more intensive industry than telecoms. The US built the right and necessary systems so the citizens do not get taken advantage off by capitalist but also more importantly do not suffer for nothing because of systemic corruption which Nigeria currently is engulfed in because of our system and laws. If Nigerians saw transparency and genuine changes they would gladly embrace the temporary hardships knowing when it will ease off and get normal. The Oil and power industry in Nigeria currently is not transparent or genuine even with the so called deregulation and removal of subsidy. The agricultural sector is abandoned and behind the oil sector for decades because nobody wants slow ROI they all want Fast ROI where they can easily rip Nigerians off by takings advantage of the weak systems and monumetal corruption in those sectors and in the country generally. Nigerian are fighting against unfair capitalism and the corruption within particular systems. |
IbeOkehie: 4:49am On Aug 11, 2024 |
jaxxy: Nigeria is a feudal-socialist nation. Nigeria is NOT a capitalist nation. Capitalist nations have property rights....Nigeria has zero property rights. That's factual. NEPA was broken up. Parts of it were sold but the most important unit of the NEPA system is still owned by government. It's called TCN, the Transmission Company of Nigeria. TCN and its sister company NBET is the ONLY legal buyer and seller of electricity in Nigeria. The major input for producing electricity in Nigeria is natural gas and it is completely owned by government. Since the price of electricity is STILL REGULATED, the above conditions mean the entire electricity sector is COMPLETELY controlled by government. So despite the tinkering and buzzwords, NOTHING has changed in the electricity sector and it was President Yaradua that made it that way. Imagine you own your private shoe making company. The government makes a law that you can only sell your shoes to government AND consumers can only buy shoes from government. And government sets the prices. Just think about this for a few minutes and tell me if that's a free and private market for shoes. So many Nigerians cite electricity as an example of the failure of privatization and free markets. It shows Nigerians have little understanding of markets, the Nigerian economy or economics in general. Thanks for the exchange though. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |
