The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has asked youths of Niger Delta extraction to file out and take part in the planned peaceful protest against bad governance slated to commence on August 1.

President of the IYC Worldwide, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, made the call in a statement made available to Vanguard.

He was reacting to statements issued by the Chief of Army Staff, Inspector General of Police, state governors, ministers, and other top government functionaries asking Nigerians not to stage any protest.

The IYC president said Nigerians had at various times, from the colonial era to the present dispensation, protested to their displeasure against bad governance and wondered why the present istration is kicking against citizens’ rights to express their dissatisfaction over the current hardship in the country.

He recalled how the APC government rode to power in 2015 on the crest of protests against the then Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led federal government for its inability to tackle rising insecurity, unemployment, and corruption.

According to him, protest is a universal right of citizens to draw attention of those in authority to examine their conduct, programmes, and policies and tailor them for the country’s overall development.

The hardship faced by the people of the Niger Delta, particularly those at the hinterlands, is becoming unbearable as a litre of fuel now sells for over N2,000, one pure water for N100, and other essential commodities have gone beyond the reach of the people.

“Sudden deaths have become a common occurrence in rural areas due to hunger and untold suffering
,” he stated.

Dr Theophilus advised security agents to be cautious in their approach and urged them not to be overzealous and brutal while monitoring the protest in order to maintain law and order.

There is nothing like protest peacefully in a country without security like Nigeria.

For one, the hungry people who have criminal intents will use the protest as opportunity to loot peoples businesses, Rob, kill, kidnap and rape. It might just turn to an exhibition of crime.

Secondly the rulers may throw in some paid thugs to attack the protesters, and it will turn to a fight, there are just too many likely outcomes that may escalate into big fights, retaliation and revenge killings.

Thirdly, what are Ijaws aiming to achieve as a people with the protest? Nothing. If they are hungry, will th3 government feed them or pay them money to feed themselves till the next 8 years?

Zamfara has a good reason to protest insecurity. They will also use northern population to harass Tinubu into giving them more northern appointments.

1.ing a protest is not an illegal thing, don't allow anyone tell you otherwise.
2. As a Nigerian, you have the constitutional right to protest in any part of the country, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
3. Tinubu protested against every policy of Goodluck Jonathan's policies not minding how beneficial it was to the nation.
4. If you don't come out and demand for good Governance through protests, nobody will do it for you

He said the Ijaws are buying a litre of fuel for 2k, is that not enough reason to protest?

Tinubu's calamitous policies have taken away people's purchasing power, and i think he's doing it deliberately for his personal gains and that of his close associates, friends, and family .

We shall protest. We won't allow him to finish us patapata.

Change is a gradual process. Endsars was a preamble to August 1 protest. We will get there. Once the people realise the power they wield the politicians will straighten up and do what they are supposed to do.

So keep your f**king cowardly ass home and stop discouraging others from protesting.

When they told you IREV suddenly malfunctioned and a fishy result announced in 2023 elections, why didn't you protest to build on the protest of endsars?

You should thank Peter Obi for the peace and quiet you experienced that period.
He erroneously believed he would get justice from our decayed legal system. APC did threaten worse during Jonathan's time even threatened to form a parallel government. Today you guys are so jittery of a peaceful protest.

You see this protest the masses know who they are up against so you can threaten all you want even sponsor counter protest as usual. Hungry and aggrieved Nigerians will shock you come August 1.

Bro, am not talking of what Peter Obi did, I am talking about why you people (my fellow Nigerians) decided to keep quiet in the face of one obvious injustice and are now ri in the face of the inevitable follow up injustice?
