How time flies, its been 31 years since June 12th 1993, the day Bashir Tofa of NRC, and MKO Abiola of SDP, squared up to battle for the Presidency. The elections were later annulled, the fall out would claim MKO's life

However, June 12 is not something that is celebrated amongst us Igbos in the East, for two main reasons.

1. Igbos bore the brunt of the violence that followed June 12th annulment. Various armed Yoruba militias such as OPC sprang up, and wrecked violence all over the West, particularly Lagos. Igbo businesses were looted, burnt or destroyed. Overnight, thousands of Igbos had to jump into vehicles and run back to the East as the violence grew worse, in a phenomenon known as "oso Abiola"(The Abiola run). Some Igbos never returned with their lives.

2. June 12th also exposed to Igbos a certain hypocrisy they see in Yoruba's. It was Northerners that annulled June 12th, it was under the custody of a Northerner that MKO died. On the contrary, Igbo men like Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who conducted June 12th elections, nearly lost his life trying to defend MKO's results. But the Yorubas rarely ever call out the Northerners over June 12th and the death of Abiola

Had it been Igbos that annulled June 12th, had it been under the custody of an Igbo man that MKO died, heavens would have fallen.

June 12th holds no place in the hearts of us Igbos, we are still counting our loses.

The above is a lie and a revisionist narrative!

During the June 12 crises, I was old enough and had reached puberty. I witnessed what happened. The majority of Igbo actually left the West not because they, or their businesses were attacked. They left because they feared escalation of conflicts between the West and the North. Those returning to the East were actually attacked in the East leading to many of them loosing the property being taken home. Why the lies?

MKO Abiola actually lost the majority of States in the East to his rival Tofa. The East had four States then. Abiola only won in Anambra out of the four States. So, he was not popular in the East even before election. So, it wasn't any attack on Igbo businesses that made them to 'hold no good memories for Igbo', he wasn't that popular among them before and during the election.

My first ever girlfriend was a beautiful Igbo girl. She was selling Okrika for her parents then. She left for the East during this period which was very painful. No attack directed at Igbo or their businesses during the period. It was fear of the unknown and bandwagon effect that informed the mass exodus.

No one gives a Bleep about it except Yoruba people.
It is a day for them to celebrate shame and weakness to further tell the world why they're cowards.
Why do you think something bad or a bad omen always befalls them on this day?

First their Hero Abiola was executed by a Fulani

Now their president disgraced the whole country internationaly with his weak knees and old blind eyes.

Anyone seen celebrating June 12 should be picked up and thrown in jail.

I know about the June 12 violence, but have never heard it was targeted at Igbos. I however will agree that Igbos have always borne the brunt of most crisis in Nigeria for no justifiable reason except Igbos patriotic spread all over Nigeria.

Throughout the June 12 struggles, Yoruba majorly faced IBB, Abacha and their goons. Even though the likes of Arthur Nzeribe, that goatlike late senator Chukwuemeka and Kanu of YEAA are anti MKO, no Igbo was targeted by Yorubas. Can OP mention any igboman who lost his life or was attacked by Yorubas?

Igbos were attached in the east by easterners who are arm robbers taking advantages of people rushing back from various part of the country.

And why would a conflict that wasn't their concern have made them scared of running and leaving Lagos?
They were going back to the east because they don't want to be part of the anticipated battle between the South West and the North. This is the fact. If you lay your hand on newspaper of the time that is what you will read. Not the revisionist you are hearing now.

Read this piece, you will understand why Igno left the West enmass

https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/04/why-igbo-should-not-go-home-for-census/
.
This is a quote from that piece:

I was here, in 1993-4, when the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, presumably won by Chief MKO Abiola, threatened to tear Nigeria apart. I was a witness to the mass exodus of millions of apprehensive but misguided Igbo people who assumed that Yoruba secession, followed by armed conflict, was inevitable. Off they went; those with their own vehicles, as well as those going with public transport. Anything that could move was boarded at shylock fares in the desperate bid to leave the South-West and get home

Sorry, your aspirations and chances already perished with your god, abacha. Ask Daniel Kanu, ask Nzeribe, ask chukwuemeka etc. The same thing is playing out with your current leaders and agitators. If you know you know.

Exactly. I was old enough too. I believe I was in primary 4 or so, and I recall all the riots. All the ibos in my class had even disappeared before the election. After the election and annulment, I was still going to school till the school shut down. We always had to drive through the rioters, and they let people go once without any harm once you have a tree or any green plant branch fixed on your car.
