1. The OT was written in Hebrew (and Aramaic). The Hebrew word 'ebed' means slave, servant, bondsman etc.

2. That's patently false... Some western countries like have been making moves to ban slavery in the 14th century - long before the industrial revolution. Long before industrial revolution, there are have been Christian movements campaigning for the end of slavery. Abolitionists made it loud and clear that the reason why they opposed slavery was due to their religious beliefs - unless perhaps you know better than them. Even with industrial revolution, if the Westerners do not have the conscience to end slavery, they could have found other menial jobs for slaves to do.
