A yet-to-be-identified man has been killed in a road accident that occurred close to Igbariam Junction, along the Onitsha-Nteje-Awka Expressway in Anambra State.

According to an eyewitness, who refused to disclose his name, the accident occurred at about 8:30 am on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the accident involved a commercial-loaded Benz truck with registration number, UKP381ZU and a green private Toyota Sienna with registration number, KRD429AG.

About 10 persons, comprising seven males and three females, were said to be involved in the crash. While one person, a male, lost his life, one person was injured.

A staff officer, Public Education, Federal Road Safety Corps, Charles Iyiegbuniwe, who confirmed the development, said the probable cause of the accident was “speeding and collision.”

Iyiegbuniwe said, “At about 8:26 am, a report came in that a crash involving a sudden breakdown of a commercial-loaded truck Benz 1513 with Registration Number UKP381ZU and a green private Sienna of Liveth Vatten Limited, with registration number KRD429AG, carrying 10 engers, seven males, and three females, whose driver’s name is Rufus Chime, happened.

“One male adult was injured while one yet-to-be-identified male adult was killed. An eyewitness reported that the Sienna was approaching the road with speed, but unknown to him that the truck broke down, he tried to swing, but could not control the motion. As a result, he collided with the truck.

“Before the arrival of the rescue team, sympathisers had taken the injured victim to Toronto Hospital, while the one killed was taken to the morgue at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku.”

He added that the Sector Commander in Anambra State, Adeoye Irelewuyi, sympathised with the family of the deceased.

“The corps commander raised a sound warning to the drivers of articulated vehicles to endeavour to place the caution triangle and reflective tape that will indicate signs of cautionary alert to other moving vehicles,” he added.

Irelewuyi buttressed that they should always carry loads that the vehicle and driver can control and always fix their vehicle to suit the road standard and explicitly advised that the only way to kill fatality of a crash is to drive in a controllable speed limit manner.
