South-West farmers, Miyetti Allah sign peace pact

Farmers and herdsmen in the South-West, on Saturday, signed a peace pact to end clashes between the two warring groups and promote food security for the benefit of all.

The Coordinator of Commodities Farmers Organisation in the South-West, Segun Dasaolu, and the President of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Othman Ngelzarma, signed the peace pact on behalf of the two groups at a Commodities Farmers Organisation Summit, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Saturday.

The theme of the summit is ‘Sustainable Food Production in South-West Nigeria: The Way Forward.’

Speaking separately while g the agreement, Dasaolu and Ngelzarma said the step became necessary to ensure that peace reigns in the zone in particular and Nigeria at large.

Dasaolu said, “The summit focuses on ensuring that the South-West farmers return to the farm, and also to promote food security in the country. This summit brings together farmers and herders across the six states in this region. This is to allow them to proffer solutions to challenges faced by both groups and the need for the government to carry us along in providing , policy formulation, and assistance.

“We have signed the peace pact to put a stop to farmers/herders clashes. The first step we are going to take is to identify who are genuine herders in the South-West. We have also agreed together to collect or collate data in that regard.”

Also, the President of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ngelzarma, said, “Nothing works when there is no peace. So, we will work with farmers to promote food security in Nigeria. We will also work in collaboration with them to fish out kidnappers in the South-West zone in particular and Nigeria in general.”

A former Governor of Oyo State and the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, and the Iyaloja General, who is also the daughter of President Bola Tinubu, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo were among notable Nigerians who witnessed the g of a peace pact.

Making peace with terrorists is INSANITY.

Criminals invaded your farmland with their demon cattle to trample on your crop and livelihood. They kidnap and rape your wives and daughters.

YET you signed a peace pact with them. INSANITY!

ALL herdsmen should be tracked down and KILLED until they beg for peace. Then CONTINUE to kill them.

This agreement is a JOKE. And a show of SPINELESSNESS.

Cowardice from yoruba farmers. The herdsmen have oppressed them into submission. They will now have to share their farmlands with herders.

If the measures taking so far is capable of ending the endless herdsmen killing of farmers in the area, then is a welcome development tongue

The content of that si called Pact/Peace Accord or whatever the name they call it should be publicized. it could be that the man signed off half of Yoruba land for a tail of cow and no one knows. Anyway, I hope this agreement doesn't mean that when Fulani invaded your farm you should be looking for Miyetti leader to report to rather than destroying their cattle too.

So it is your suggestion that all other regions should sign similar 'peace agreements' with invaders who ocuppy lands without paying for them, graze their cattle on farmers farmlands and attack anyone who questions them. This is exactly how the British signed similar agreements with the different parts of Nigeria shortly before they colonized Nigeria. It's clearly Yorubas don't learn from history and are repeating it again but this time with a non-progressive people like the fulanis. Tufiakwa!
Others will be extremely foolish to follow the Yoruba example and suggestion.

No, other regions can escalate things and continue with the back and forth fracas.

God please give us courageous new sets of leaders in the southwest.

Any leader who taught of this before even g it, God will punish them all.

As for we in Ondo state nothing like peace for herdsmen. Any one who comes near your farm kill them all. Start acquiring weapons my people. Don't accept this. It will be bad for us in the future.

Dont do evil thing in another state and tag Ondo state to it, please.

That's not bad,but nevertheless the Yoruba communities should never let their guard down, just because a peace treaty was signed.
In fact they should be even more vigilant, proactive and go the extra mile on their own to forestall any slightest hint of Herdsmen crises.
They should set up forest guard teams and all that and should learn to deal ruthlessly with any herdsmen who tries to put their hands into the open jaws of a basking crocodile.
