So reducing university fees will make people eat? The universities are complaining seriously that they can hardly even afford diesel bill and UCH was thrown into darkness for owing electricity bills yet the university Labour unions have had their concerns as their own priority instead of putting heads together with management on how their universities can increase their funding in creative and innovative ways.

Should they shut the universities? I don't think so. The best option is to raise fees but should make it moderate enough for most of the students still able to afford it. Some of these students use N200k-worth or more mobile devices and can afford this new fees while some from even modest families will get to school and face other things apart from their education and ultimately the taxpayers don't get the real value on subsidizing their education.
I the call for reducing the hike but the universities can increase fees to give quality services and education to the students. Quality education is not cheap o. Alumni should come in to assist the universities too.

As harsh as i am going to sound, the fact is universites are broke, and despite ASUU trying hard over the years, including g an agreement in 2009 with government that up till this hour has not been fufilled....there fore fees have to go up.

Nigerians like to complain that our universiites are poorly equipped and cannot compete globally, and they are not among the best in the world. The problem is, money is needed for the universites to be the best in the world, and it has to come from fees.

Our education budget is 1.4 bn dollars. Meanwhile SA is spending 17.5 billion dollars on basic education, alone, with an additional money for teacher salaries. Let that sink in.

Yet we are expected to produce schools and universites that sur south africa on one seventeenth the budget. Magical thinking?

The thing is, either government raises earnings drastically to something like 200 billion dollars per annum, or fees go up.

The target for education should be more about quality than quantity. As much as it is important that everyone who desires to attend a tertiary education does, it is even more important that those who do presently get the best possible. If we have to make a compromise between the two, we should sacrifice quantity of graduates for the quality of the graduates. But we should also improve the quality of public basic education that one does not have to have tertiary education in order make it in our country. We should make the system so good that we can have our own Richard Bransons, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who all have gone on to be world-changers despite not having university degrees, but public basic education in their countries.

I believe that reducing the subsidy levels on tertiary education will free up more money for governments to invest in basic education, especially states and local governments. Public basic education systems should be given the highest priority possible. This is because it is the only vehicle that can deliver education en masse. The norm should be that everyone should be comfortable going to public primary and secondary schools, and private schools to be only for the upper class. The federal government should set the overall policy for education but leave it for the states and local governments to implement it. They should provide funding for implementation of specific policies, such as increased science education and so on as the policy states.

States should individually craft policies for better basic education delivery, either through the creation of school districts or making sure, for example, that there is a minimum of one primary school per ward and a secondary school for 3-4 contiguous wards. Also, these schools should have the best infrastructure, from classrooms to laboratories to workshops and so on. There should be upgrading of curricula to attracting the best into the teaching profession. Each state should set targets for measuring improvements and quality, upon which funding should be dependent. These targets should also include the percentage of graduating students that go on to tertiary institutions. Also, local governments should be better strengthened to improve primary education, with the oversight and funding of the state.

Beyond that, we need to change our approach to education, which is solely defined by many as excelling in the classroom. True and proper education goes beyond that. And what about sports, technical skills and the arts? Not every student is the excellent classroom-type, but every student and person on earth is imbued with natural gifts which can be used to add value to his society and himself.

The focus of these things is to improve educational quality from the bottom up, so that those who go through schooling, whether they stop after secondary school or go on to acquire a PhD have received quality education that they can use to their productivity and that of the larger society and economy. This is the only way we can afford the poor kid the opportunity to start at rock bottom and not just go through school, but also receive quality education all the way

Pandora was right. Education is not for the poor. It is expensive and costly.

As Pandora will probably also wisely tell you...that is why in some countries, everyone is either heavily taxed to ensure the poor can go to school on the same footing as the rich..AS SEEN in denmark and , OR loans are made avaialble for students to go to school (No, loans are not good in the long run)...which is what they do in the USA.

Think that most US and European students are footing the bill for university from their parent's pocket.? Think again.

Here in Nigeria, when we had less than 10000 students nationwide in university, we could afford to use oyel and groundnut and other money to fund their education almost free of charge. Even give them comfortable living self. Now, we can't do that because our populaiton is too too large, and student numbers have increased.

(MY parent's generation, a minority of young people went to university.. Today everyone goes to university. My generation, most of us went to uni or poly. Less than one percent went to work. Even the one that went to work after sec school, within 2-3 years I saw him processing his ission, lol.)

We cannot charge every Nigerian tax because most of us are too poor to pay a goodly amount in income tax. And the loans system is coming, but I don't expect it to last long.

So that leaves fees.

We can all complain and make fun of tinubu and obi , but the fact is, university costs money. This goes beyond politricks.

I think we should understand that the university needs the hike to remain in the business that brought the students to the school in the first place. Secondly, it is much more difficult for citizens in other countries too. Biden has been cancelling students loan regularly because most of the students could not pay back after graduation and most UK universities are currently strained financially, so bad that some universities have started folding up in the US. Do you want UI to fold up ni? Hike yes but the hike should be affordable is better than blackmailing the school with people who have economic challenges. The school is challenged financially at the moment and needs help to save itself and then save the students. I believe that the hike is necessary but it should not be too much.
