In Nigeria, the tradition of exclusive primary education catering to the desires of affluent families has long been established. However, the unveiling of Charterhouse Lagos, a new primary school targeting children aged five to eight, has stirred up a storm of controversy on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter). While Charterhouse School has been a prestigious institution in the UK, the launch of the school in Lagos promises to offer parents the opportunity to provide their children with a top-tier educational experience, boasting slogans such as “Privilege, Prestige, Presence” and “Inspired by Britain, delivered in Lagos.” The construction of Charterhouse Lagos in Lekki is still underway, but it’s the exorbitant price tag that has ignited outrage. Prospective pupils must undergo a rigorous application process, including a hefty ₦2 million application fee, which does not even cover tuition costs. The cost is way exorbitant no matter what. 2 million should be the maximum tuition to pay for any child below 10 years no matter what. Even if the child is the son or daughter of the richest man in Nigeria, paying 40million tuition fee for a child in Nursery or primary or even secondary school is madness raised to the highest level, it's pure extortion, it's a criminal act, Nigerian government through the Universal Basic Education Board should stop them, it is not good for Nigeria. Government should stop them by all means please ![]() 6 Likes |

franchasofficia:Words like "exorbitant", "costly", "expensive" are all relative . Meaning that it depends on the situation and persons involved. What is expensive for one person may be too cheap to buy for another. What you pay for a pair of shoes might be another person's full wardrobe cost. Your one feeding budget might be another person's annual income. Asking government to stop the construction of a private school because it's too expensive is a bit of a stretch |

thesicilian:I don't have strength now to enlighten you. Basic education is different from luxury fashion wears. If the 40million per annum tuition fee is true, it is madness to establish such nursery school in Nigeria, that is being insensitive and foolish. 1 Like |

If there is truly something like this, then we have no government. That is about $34k and it makes no sense whatsoever. Where are the UN SDGs?Even colleges and some universities aren't charging that high abroad for a higher education. If I were the government I'll find a way to tax them heavily since they don't want to have sense. The British will keep milking us since we decide not to use our heads.

BigYash:Sadly so. I better my neighbour. Big man. Odogwu and all foolish competition. I checked the fees for this school in UK which is for 13-18year olds. It is 47,535 pounds per year for boarding. I don't know what model they want to use but everything they will do favors the Brits. British curriculum my yansh. Colonial enslaved mentality. We many times as Africans don't know where our priorities lie. A lot of our kids arr missing from their African knowledge and customs but we teleport them to be European minds in an African body
