Nonsense what have we gained since our borders were closed, how many local companies are selling their products cheap to Nigerians

I agree with your submission, until the Nigerian citizens make noise about stable power ( electricity 💡 and mechanized farming this nation won't move anywhere.

What fatoba wrote up there is not new to many of us, why? We are used to the suffering, smiling and oppressive lifestyle. He should have pinpointed the " how, when & what the FG must do to regain their strengths. What happen to restructuring all the MDA's and what his he doing in his own capacity in Ekiti.

Nation building is not rocket 🚀 science that I know, if the leaders of this nation are righteous they will do the needful to please the masses. You can't tell not to open borders because we need to produce good and services, what and what have your principals put in place for the smooth running of production en mass in Nigeria. No power, the only means of transportation is by road, which are porous, the environment is not saturated for business to thrive, inflation happen almost every day. I don't like re occurring stories that dosn't bring a reliable change, get to work make impact and you will be blessed at it.

It is obvious that the Nigerian leaders are monumental failures in nation building and it's a deliberate attempt to keep the nation on the floor. No country as ever prospered either without a great leader or a popular revolt.

Apus:
Nigeria defies economic principles.

Buhari closed Nigeria's border for almost eight years leading to shortage in consumable goods and increase in prices of these goods, part of which we're still suffering till today. Imported goods even became cheaper in most cases.

Truth is, we're yet to attain self-sufficiency, until we deal with power and energy problems as well as security.

They are fools, what he said is not new, what pains most is stories upon story without input or action.

Imagine a legislation stakeholder saying the border must remain closed without an enabling environment even the agricultural sector is not looking juicy to graduate. To slap fatoba dey hungry me hah

That rep is useless. It will boost the economy rather. We Nigerians are very wicked. We take advantage of everything.. How can we close our borders and food stuffs like local rice, beans, grandnut oil etc will still be expensive.

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY BORDER IN NORTHERN NIGERIA.

NORTHERNERS OPEN THEIR OWN BORDER BEFORE AND SINCE INDEPENDENCE ERA IN NIGERIA.

The regulation is only at Border in Western part of Nigeria and Cameroun Border.

NOBODY CONTROL THE NORTH.

Let him be deceiving himself and be speaking with DOUBLE MOUTH.

If this our so called leaders in both arms of government failed to repent, I pity them and their families because the hanger of God is hanging on them. How would a set of people that import virtually everything they consumed saying we should not open border. The closure of border has made monopolist like Dangote and other to make abnormal profit. The man advocating for non reopening of border failed to realize that they only close the borders in the south, while northern borders were wide opened for all forms of import and export of goods and services. The Nigeria law and policies are not binding on some section of this country, particularly when they are in power.

If Niger Republic border is open, other borders must also open. Or at least open to items that are too expensive in the market. Citizens need relief ASAP. Prices are too high.

Even if we produce ours, insecurity and the cost of fuel and transportation would still be a problem.

They must have been paid to say such rubbish or they are highly benefiting from the border closure. Open the damn borders and watch how the price of basic commodities plummet.

rice produced in india, indonesia or maleysia will travel all thw way from asia and will still be sold for profit at a price less than ₦10k, but the one grown here will be rebagged as foreign used and be sold for ₦90k by our devilish farmers and markers..... na we dey do ourselves

He sounded like a stupid person.

Let's produce what we eat, for years, we've not been able to attain sufficiency or food security.

They're quick to blame every increase on the dollar, but when the dollar is coming down, they're slow to reduce prices and quick to increase same.

I'm sure he's speaking on behalf of cement manufacturers. Our economy even did better when we were importing of these things we placed embargo on.

They should build our capacity to produce what we eat before thinking of shutting the borders.

And the rest of the population should suffer because of a less than 3 million farmers who are always increasing prices and can't even go to farm to harvest in some cases.

Like i've suggested, let's import what we need, when we have enough, we send to the farmers in their villages and when they farm their own and government buys it from them.

CaveAdullam:
The article and concern of the rep are everything that can't make a country experience economic prosperity.

Opening your borders will reduce the price of goods and services. Because there will be inflow from many sources who intend to capture your market. Even many of the indigenous citizens can see it as an opportunity to act as wholesalers, retailers, or distributors of such goods.

Opening your border allows your citizens to focus on the absolute or comparative advantage of goods and services. Rather than try to reinvent the wheel, they can focus on goods and services they have higher powers compared to other countries.

By opening your border and allowing the free flow of goods and services, that both import and export, you make life easy for the common man because producers will compete for them by lowering their prices. If the citizens can get their basic needs met they can focus on other things like innovation, invention, and research.

Any economy regulated by the government makes both imports and exports difficult. The result is hardship. The people favored are government businessmen and their friends and families. It gives room to monopoly. It makes local manufacturing and production difficult.

The function of government is to check for standards and quality and maybe bail out in tough economic situations. By the way, those difficult economic conditions are a result of useless government policies.

The free market is what built, America, China, Singapore, etc. Allow the market to decide what will happen in the economy. Give it a free chance. The free market creates more prosperity than anyone can think of.

Greed and exploitation in the free market is a fallacy. A fallacy we've all swallowed as truth. When there's competition, which is a result of the free market, there can't be an unnecessary hike in price. See Air Peace and other airlines.
Again we don't also consider the cost of production. We only see the price and start shouting "greed and exploitation".

However, in a free market, a capitalist market, every manufacturer will maneuver costs to ensure that the price for goods is on the same par with similar goods in the market. Or better still switch to another form of business to avoid loss.

Nigeria should open its border. Reduce the amount of import charges. Reduce tax rate. And the economy will grow.

There was no country when they were poor that closed her border that ever prospered. No country on earth. No one.

Thanks.

I don't agree with your view, we have to encourage local production through tariffs( import duties), government policies ( loans for start ups, infrastructure), close the borders and let competition be among local manufacturers to stabilise prize, foreign goods that we lack the technology to produce should be imported but if we are smart we would steal their expertise and start production of them, I believe this what China did to become a world superpower
