Which Of These Two Careers Can Help Me Migrate To The US? (22828 Views)
(1) Go Down)
2braithe: 8:49pm On Apr 02, 2024 |
Hello all. I am a fresh ing graduate awaiting NYSC and I need to make a life changing decision that I will not regret. I plan to go into Finance, Investment Banking specifically. It resonates with my degree and I can prepare for an entry level role during NYSC. I picked up Web development during my final year. I have a solid knowledge of HTML, CSS and basic JavaScript now. I plan to go to the USA through the study route (Masters) and stay back legally. For Finance: Within Nigeria, I can get an internship and later an entry level role in one of the numerous investment banking firms in Nigeria. In USA, I'll need to do MBA. After, to get an employer to sponsor me for H1b visa is war because there are tons of capable citizens better than me. I was even told if I'm not in the STEM field, I should forget sponsorship from employers. Even if I get sponsorship, there are only 85k H1b slots per year, in 2023, about 483k people applied.😠For Tech: Within Nigeria, I barely saw any internship opening. Remote internships in foreign companies are the worst. Within 5 hours, 1k people have applied. The job requirements alone will take me over a year to achieve. Same as normal junior job openings... Supply is more than demand. In USA, I'll need to do Masters in Computer science(I can only work with a degree related to my field of occupation). Coming from an ing background, they may not pick me. If they pick me, I'll do a hell of advanced maths courses. I can't cope with Discrete mathematics, Linear algebra, Calculus I, Calculus II, etc. If I manage to cope and I get an employer to sponsor me for H1b visa, I'll still face the lottery of 85k slots and overwhelming applicants. I can't spend that money and come back to Nigeria again. Please advise me, what should I do? I'm considering Canada but I don't know if she is better. 5 Likes |

Focus on finance. Go with your internship and entry level role and shatter every KPI! Finance is big EVERYWHERE. If you can demonstrate your competence and have a track record of success in investment banking, you'll NOT have too much problem with getting a foreign employer. Everybody wants MORE money. If you can make it happen, you'll DEFINITELY get sponsorships. Unless you want to build products or SAAS that solve problems, FORGET tech in the US. A lot of people in the US already have CS Degrees and they are competing for the same jobs. Plus, several tech companies have been laying off workers like a rocket shedding its expended booster. Focus on the one where the foundation is already laid and blow up every hurdle. 46 Likes 2 Shares |

I understand you're considering applying for the H1B visa and are weighing your options between finance and tech. It's a significant decision, and I empathize with the uncertainty you may be feeling. From my experience, the H1B visa process can be challenging, with no guarantees of selection due to the limited number of visas available each year and intense competition. While both finance and tech sectors offer opportunities, it's essential to consider the current demand and trends in each field, as well as your own skills and preferences. Additionally, exploring alternative pathways like the EB visa route or pursuing further studies could provide more stability and options for your future. Whatever path you choose, I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!"

oluwaseyi0: Tech is overrated...everyone is now going into tech. Go to linked in, once a company posts a tech job, you will see 1,200 people have already applied. Tech is becoming saturated 16 Likes |

Oga, you better choose a career for the future and that is Tech. Tech will soon take over everything including Finance. You said you don't want to through the hurdles of advanced mathematics. Investment banking nko, oh boy, nothing good comes easy o. If it is America, you will definitely get a job forget about all those hearsay, or people telling you, you can't make it. It just a matter of time. And finally, it now depends on the type of Tech, you wanna do. You can't be a software developer, cloud engineer, robotics, Artificial Intelligence or cyber security specialist and you won't get a job. You really need a mentor bro. 9 Likes |

hotwax: Okay is software engineering the only niche in tech? Do you know there are niches under Software Engineering that are not saturated? Not to talk of tech as a whole. 4 Likes |

You can merge the two (almost in a self employed manner).

hotwax: Good things dont come easy. If you want, to be big, you have to take the hard road or stay off tech. As for AI coders, saying AI will replace software engineers is like say wordpress will replace web developers 8 Likes |
