Replace HND with B.Tech, Rector appeals to FG
By Adeola Badru, Ibadan

The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede Ogbomosho, Oyo State, Dr. (Engr.) Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-hameed has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to replace the Higher National Diploma, HND with a Bachelor of Technology, B.Tech for the sake of indigent students across the country.

Abdul-Hameed during a live radio programme in Ibadan on Saturday, stated that a league of Rectors has resolved and clamoured for the replacement of HND with B.Tech to balance the dichotomy, stressing that both undergraduates and lecturers at the Polytechnics are as good as their counterparts in the universities.

The rector said that acquisition of technical skill and entrepreneurship contribute more to the economic development and growth of the nation than degrees, citing China and the United Arab Emirates as examples of growing economies which depend on the skills and abilities of its citizens for survival.

He mentioned that the Polytechnics inject their undergraduates with technical practicals and emphasise more entrepreneurship. Saying that there is a scarcity of White-collar jobs which is rationale behind acquitting students in one or two skills for them to be self-employed after graduation.

According to him: “Entrepreneurship and employability have been our core focuses due to the fact that jobs aren’t anywhere. Unlike universities, we cannot be giving out A4 paper diplomas without a Skill. Institutions that lay emphasis on entrepreneurship, you will see many of their graduates have skills they rely on rather than looking for white-collar jobs.”

“The way out is for the president to assent the bill and cancel the HND to B.Tech programme or else the disparity will continue. We hope that President Bola Tinubu signs the bill soon since last istration failed to do so.”

Abdul-Hameed, on approved Student Loan, lauded the Federal Government for making education accessible to the indigent students who have a shortfall of funds to their academics. Noting that scholarship and education loans are something people use to access education at all levels.

He added that the tuition fee should be low and students should also be permitted to take an interest-free loan.

“As long as the students are getting a loan from their various institutions, they should be acquitted with skill acquisitions so that they would be able to pay back after 2 years or graduation.”

“I want to believe that 2yrs is sufficient for students, even if it is not, the government does not make it mandatory. The loan can be renewed or extended,” he said.

If the govt converts hnd programs to btech for engineering students, what about the management students or students of other faculties, will they be issued btech too.

Since we’ve got the polytechnics rolling out graduatesin Nigeria, what technical skills have they been able to contribute to the development of Nigeria? All they do after graduation is to start seeking for the white collar job like their University counterparts and beefing degree holders at work

National Board for Technical Education NBTE. a body that governs polytechnics . From the name, you can see that if not because of greed, polytechnics are only meant for engineering or technologically driven courses. Management and social science courses were introduced to have more students and get more money.

Again, even in the university, the mode and duration of learning for engineering, health science, and management courses is different. And for the sake of simple understanding, how does Btech ing sounds to you?

This is a welcome development, it should be converted for all polytechnic student, and after that, all polytechnic graduate should also be given an opportunity to go back to their various schools to change their old certificate of HND to B.Tech....

The problem of Nigeria is that we don't tend to value our things, that's why when you also travel out of the country to work, you will be asked to do top up courses to cover the degree you brought from Nigeria...

I've a lecturer who is an HND holder from London, I'm sure no polytechnic can employ him as a lecture if he's carrying Nigeria HND...

Until we value our own things, we will always be devalued...

Truth is even if they call it B.Tech, there’ll still be disparity between B.Sc, B.Eng & the proposed B.Tech.

So what will social science & other non-technical disciplines be issued with?

There's no point swapping HND to Btech. Just remove the dichotomy.

Btech Microbiology??
Btech Public ?
O wrong now

Ngl, Polytechnic students are very good in practical aspect of their field, while the university counterparts dwell mainly on theories and syllabuses they've been using since 1520s

Theories are now outdated.
Practical aspect is always up to date.

Hmmmm..... E be like say something dey worry that rector. There's a huge difference between an HND holder and a degree holder, including the lecturers sef. They should just tell the rector to sit down and eat the poly cake jejely

HND is as useless that waec cert looks more important. Bsc is just so overrated

Same FG that were foaming in the mouth on how HND will be equal to BSc. If they don't value HND, they should close down all polytechnic and convert it to poultry. Studies also shows that HND students are doing better than their counterparts

The rector needs to to be schooled on why and how the HND programme came into being. There is no basis for comparison. It will only worsen the situation. So if they convert it to b. Tech technical colleges too should award diploma OND, HND. Mba

HND holder from London? Do they offer Hands there? I'm aware an HND is the equivalent of an associate degree in the US, an associate degree is considered lesser than a degree and is a three year course or so. It is just like our own HND is considered lesser than a degree.

There may be disparity on the basis of where they graduate, and not on the basis of a degree such as BTech. I graduated from a University of Technology with BTech. in Mechanical Engineering.

The main problem with Polytechnics is, they have deviated from their mandates. I don't know why Polytechnics will be offering courses like Mass Communication, Insurance, and other non-technical courses. Still they are expecting people to treat the same way as University graduates. I only revere those that study Engineering and courses like Building Tech., Architecture, Surveying, etc. Others have no business going to Polytechnics. Polytechnics these days are just like dumping ground for University aspirants that could not secure an ission.

The problem is B.tech is being offered by Universities of Technology. We all know the B.tech in a university and B.tech in a polytechnic isn't the same curriculum.

If not for the Nigerian system, polytechnic would have suited me better as I have more personal skills in tech than what I went through in the university. I used to envy those in poly. They are more practical and have extensive laboratories. The curriculum teaches how to do it. Universities teach what is needed to do it.

They should just stop comparing it.

It is better they ask to be upgraded to University of technology than ask HND to be B.tech.
