The United States has urged the Federal Government to prioritise investment in agriculture to tackle the prevailing food crisis and the hunger pummelling the country.

The US Charge d’Affaires in Nigeria, David Greene, said that leveraging on abundant agricultural potentials remained a crucial way to bolster food security and fast-track Nigeria’s socio-economic development including the creation of job opportunities.

Greene, who spoke on Wednesday at Ipao Ekiti, in Ikole Council area of Ekiti State during a visit by the US Embassy to the 15,000 hectares Agbeyewa Farms, a private initiative of Cavista Holdings, urged Nigeria to harness its abundant arable lands, fertile soil and favourable weather endowments to provide food for the citizenry and as well export.

He urged federal and state governments to take a cue from Agbeyewa Farms which had greatly tapped into the economic potentials of large-scale agriculture, saying, “We are aware of the food security challenge and the post-harvest losses in Nigeria. With Investments and leadership like this, I think the lives of a lot of Nigerians can be changed for the better.

“We know that agriculture in Nigeria has lots of incredible potential. The US will do a lot in the sector of course, but I can’t say precisely what we might do in the future. We got investment in Ikun Diary Farms and cocoa production in Ekiti and the rest.

“USAID sees the future and is offering a lot across board to the Nigerian producers collaborating with donors including the World Bank and others. With the kind of economic innovation we see here, we need to work together with the people of Nigerians to benefit the people,”
he said.

Chairman of Cavista Holdings, Mr John Olajide, said that the multimillion naira investment in agribusiness was to ensure adequate supply of foods, improve nutrition, create jobs and foster community development.

Olajide said that the crops of interest to the agro-allied farm were cassava, maize, and yam among others, saying that plans were afoot to commence the cassava revolution project in partnership with the Ekiti State Government to meet the rising demand for cassava chips in the export market and reduce post-harvest losses by at least 60 per cent.

He said, “Agbeyewa Farm is meant to create value and transform lives. The main reason why we invested in Ekiti State is to create jobs and create opportunities for a lot of people.

“We are doing experiments here with cassava to help farmers improve their yields. Those seedlings were given to the farmers to improve their lives and we incorporated the farmers into our outgrowers in our farm and do up to 10 hectares and get better yield.

“One important thing is farmers struggle with access to the market. We’re working on the early stage of the cassava revolution project in partnership with the state government where we will get at least 100 hectares of cassava cultivated in the state.

“It will reduce the over 60 per cent post-harvest loss, our goal is to eliminate post-harvest loss so that Ekiti farmers can create wealth through farming”, he added.

God bless the Nairaland mods today.
I was almost giving up on Nairaland cos the incessant posting of suffering people buying yam, bread and pepper, the increase in price of cement, people fainting on the road and also companies winding down will make you believe Nigeria is closer to Argentina,a country with more than 100% inflation.
I know the Algorithm favors bringing news about people buying one small fish and 3 spoons of rice for 2000 to the front-page and the need to continually rehash some pity party stories but I daresay Good things are happening in Nigeria.
I applaud the individual who decided to start this farm project,it confirms that there's some truth in the figures put out by the Nigeria bureau of statistics is correct.
According to the data,Ekiti attracted some foreign Direct investment In the last quarter of 2023,along with 3 other states.
I was wondering where the money came from into Ekiti state, but I'm sure it must definitely be through the farm project.
For other states who go abroad looking for Investors that never show up,I urge them to stop the wild goose chase abroad and focus on agriculture.
Production, processing and export of food is big business anywhere in the world and I believe this period should force these governors to look inwards.
God bless Nigeria....

No true and visionary leaders in Nigeria at the moment. They only think of drugs, forgeries, lootings, killings and evils.

They would rather embezzle money than to diversify or do anything that would benefit the general populace at the expense of their personal gain.

Make rice reach 200k per bag.

The hunger must choke, Mandate standers will soon full mortuary.

Na so we talk am

Government oooooh.

everything produced in ABA from now. Give them access to export without charge.

Do so for every producer and farmer etc. everything we can sell out lets sell out.

Send people to farm, clear bushes for everybody to farm and sell the produce in the next 6 months

Farm everywhere lets produce food and sell.

academic research, any researcher that does not produce anything deduct research fund from source for that researcher.

Gather experts Chemical Engineers to revamp the refineries.

Artisanal fuel production with control of pollution.

Give time line for everything called endeavor.

But the wicked one will not allow them to hear. They are a confused set. When they get there they get confused. They begin to wonder what is happening to them. It is not their fault. Man was not created to rule himself. Those who managed to get it somewhat right in the past though with unsolvable challenges are also getting confused now. Just look around and you will understand.
