A 9-Year-Old Male Lion On Monday Killed a Zookeeper while feeding the wild cats in their den at the Zoological garden of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The Victim, Identified As Mr Olabode Olawuyi, who was a Veterinary Technologist, was said to have has been in charge of the Zoological garden for over a decade.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday.

He said, “Mr Olawuyi has been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about 9 years ago but, tragically, the male lion killed the man who had been feeding them.

“The other of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities.”

Olarewaju said upon hearing the sad news, the management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Adebayo Bamire, abruptly ended an ongoing meeting for an on-the-spot assessment

“Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, was informed, on arrival, by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive.

“Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive Lion has been euthanized.

“The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life,” he added.

The varsity spokesman said the management had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

In February 2018, a 22-year-old woman was mauled to death by a lion at a private game lodge close to South Africa’s capital Pretoria.

The victim was attacked by the lioness near Hammanskraal, roughly 45 kilometres (30 miles) north of Pretoria around 0900 GMT.

“When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene, bystanders had initiated (resuscitation). Tragically, the victim had sustained severe injuries and she died at the scene,” Nick Dollman, spokesman for the Netcare 911 ambulance service, said.

Also in August 2022, a South African conservationist was killed by lions he hand-reared, according to the family.

West Mathewson, 69, was walking two white lionesses when one of the animals attacked and killed him without warning.

The incident took place on the premises of the family-owned Lion Tree Top Lodge, in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province.

Very sad, what could have gone wrong

Big cats are unpredictable, It is possible to tame lions and make them tolerant enough to follow certain instructions. However, they are not like dogs and can exhibit unpredictable behaviors even when considered professionally tamed.

In general, tamed lions are not exactly tamed. They are just subdued. They can still act out and pose a danger to caregivers and other people.

The lion was probably too hungry as well, don't wait till they become very hungry before feeding them

May his soul rest in peace

Tinubulation effect.
Probably the lion's meal was suddenly rationed due to high cost from tinubulation calamity.

Having had paitence for a change and saw none, the lion could no longer bear the hunger.

What a pity
It's called wild animal for a reason, after feeding it from birth to age 9 it still had the zeal to eat the zoologist then, no one is safe around it

But this should be a reminder that a wild animal will always remain wild and there should be extra precautions when dealing with them

The lion's meat should have been given to the family. Nobody — no good citizen — deserves to die in such manner, that lion was a typical dullard. A man raised you for 9 years and got death in return.

Nothing hurts like finding out you might be a failed Daniel or Samson right before your death.

The man wasn’t killed for food. He was killed because his back was turned. Lions who killed for food would make short work of his skinny frame. I wish condolences to all parties involved. The last thing on his mind before death surely was “damn, I bleeped up.”

No matter how u domesticate a lion, one day it will still exhibit its wild nature.

No matter how u domesticate an Olosho, one day she will still go and collect a random preeq. It's just a matter of time.

In general, tamed lions are not exactly tamed. They are just subdued. They can still act out and pose a danger to caregivers and other people.

Reminds me of one Hollywood actress whose father decided to keep lions when she was growing up.From the cub to the adult.

Let's just say long term, it was not a good idea.

For those who think I am telling tall tales...here are some pictures. LIFE magazine no less.

Sigh... This is sad.

Does anyone still need to be told or educated about the term "Feral"?!!

A wild animal is naturally wild... It has wild and dangerous instincts lurking within it. You never let your guards down around them.

Male lions are particularly dangerous especially during mating season, and can be quite territorial within their pride... Them nor dey sabi friend at all. Matter of fact, they can even hurt and kill their fellow male lions, how much more a human male.

Same thing goes for several other wild animals.

Don't get too comfy and lax around wild animals! Don't attempt to domesticate or befriend them... Forget that nonsense of raising them from birth. Their wild nature will eventually take over most times.
