There was pandemonium in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State on Monday after a lion killed a staff of the institution who was in charge of the zoological garden.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Simeon Bamire, ordered for full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Abiodun Olarewaju, explained the zoo keeper, a Veterinary Technologist, identified as Olabode Olawuyi was killed by a nine-year-old lion while feeding animals in the garden.

According to him: “Mr Olawuyi who has been in charge of the Zoological garden for over a decade was attacked this afternoon, Monday, 19th February 2024 by a lion when he was feeding them in their den at the Zoological garden of the University.

“The other of staff who were at the scene of the incident did everything within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat had already caused severe fatalities.”

He disclosed that the VC conducted an on-the-spot assessment and was informed by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre Dr Tirimisiyu Olatunji, that all first aid and medical efforts to save the life of the victim proved abortive.

“Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive lion has been euthanized. Mr Olawuyi has been taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about nine years ago but tragically, the male lion killed the man who had been feeding them.

“The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, imploring them to take solace in God who gives life and also has the power to take life.”

So this ill wind of hunger from BAT istration has even blown upon the wild animals in Nigerian zoos.
Lions are naturally dangerous to humans, but no wild animal in Africa kills more humans, than the herbivorous but extremely aggressive Hippopotamus.
Hippos kill twice more people in Africa, than African lions and Nile crocodiles put together, and rank on the world's Guinness record as Africa's deadliest animal.
Worldwide, snakes claim more human lives than sharks, crocodiles, tigers, lions, bees, jellyfish, blue ringed octopus, stonefish and other deadly animals, combined.

The hazard of the job.

I suspect some basic safety protocols in safeguarding themselves were taken for granted resulting in this fatal accident.

May his soul rest in peace.

Male WILD animals in captivity must be broken or they would one day challenge their master.

That man raised that lion

What exactly are they investigating again?
Why the Lion killed the man ,or who sent it to kill the man?

"Investigations" done suffer for Nigerians hand.

Rest in peace to the man and measures should be taking to prevent reoccurrence.

Very easy case. The deceased family should sue the school for millions. I'm not a lawyer but a very good lawyer would ask the school to provide daily records showing how much food the lion is being fed daily and then compare it to the recommended daily nutritional requirements of a fully grown lion both in the wild and in captivity. If it turns out that the lion is underfed and malnourished, this will be a slam dunk case. The lawyer can also bring up a wrongful death and death by gross negligence charge against the school for not having the proper safety measures in place for this man to carry out his work safely.

Condolences to the family but if they play this right, It could be a windfall upwards of N800 Million.

Of course that's what always happens.
He probably felt since he's been feeding them for years they now know him.

Do they go in that very close proximity to feed the beasts? Aren't they supposed to have a way to get a live goats or ram into the lions' territory or cage?

What a sad way to die! Honestly the lion that killed the man who he has been taken care of close to a decade eventually killed him. That is the sad reality of life, we just have to be careful those who you care for and take care can end uo hurting you badly. It is unfortunate that the hungry lion killed his helper, may we never become unfortunate in life, where we are hustling to cater for ourselves and family will not be our dead point.
