The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited says it did not clash with any party over petrol subsidy removal.

Media reports, on Wednesday morning, had said the national oil company clashed with oil marketers over whether the federal government was paying subsidy on petrol or otherwise.

In a terse statement shared with TheCable, the oil firm denied having such a fallout with oil marketers.

“The publication sought confirmation on alleged subsidy reduction, to which NNPC responded that subsidy has been entirely removed,” Olufemi Soneye, NNPC’s chief corporate communications officer, said.

In his inauguration speech in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu had announced that “petrol subsidy is gone”.

However, the full implementation of the policy has been mired in doubts, with the World Bank arguing that the subsidy removal was partial.

But on October 9, 2023, Mele Kyari, NNPC’s group chief executive officer (GCEO), said the federal government was not making any under-recovery payments.

He had also said the national oil company was recovering its full cost from imported products.

“No subsidy whatsoever. We are recovering our full cost from the products that we import. We sell to the market,” Kyari said.

“We understand why marketers are unable to import. We hope that they begin to do so very quickly and these are some of the interventions government is making. There is no subsidy.”

On October 21, 2023, Tinubu had said the removal of subsidy on petrol was imperative to prevent Nigeria’s collapse.

The way NNPL lies blatantly is nauseating ans shows just how bad things have become in this country. Till today the NNPL can't tell Nigerians the actual volume of petrol consumed in the country. The NNPL is yet to for revenue from oil. They claim they have removed subsidy completely and prices are supposed to be determined by market forces but yet somehow with the naira's freefall against the dollar, the price of petrol hasn't changed. They claim marketers can now import the product but the reality is they really can't import the product at the current rates and still be able to sell at the 660 the NNPL fixed. NNPL is still the sole importers of petrol into the country

Do we have journalists in Nigeria?

One sure way to know the cost of importing petrol is to get proforma invoice from the foreign petrol sellers. With this, we can know if subsidy is being paid or not.

The usual gimmick:
Step 1 - Float a rumour of an astronomical increment in fuel price citing compelling reasons. The citizens despairingly consider the bleak future with that price, while labour unions bare their fangs and filling stations shut down leading to scarcity, and attendant black market prices way above the outrageous one rumoured... The citizens groan and say usual phrase "the price don't matter, just let fuel be available".
Step 2 - The president appears to "weigh in", and gets the unions to sheath their swords by pegging the price just below the rumoured outrageous price, but way above the current high price...
The citizens heave a sigh of "relief" and life returns to normal...until the next increment.

IT'S ABSOLUTELY A LIE THAT SUBSIDY HAS BEEN ENTIRELY REMOVED.

When subsidy is fully removed, we won't have a stable price with all these inflation.

As at when subsidy was removed, 1 dollar was around 800 naira. Now 1 dollar is around 1,300 and price of fuel is still the same.
