The debate should be between the Oba of Benin and Oba of Lagos.

Is this what we should be discussing? I guess we should be talking about how each state will compete with themselves for greatness. Which states in Nigeria look sane and organised right now? Whoever created Lagos should not be an issue, Lagos State belongs to the Yoruba. If Nigeria should split along tribal line, will Ibo or Hausa or Benin come and make Lagos state part of their lands? 3 Likes 1 Share |

quickly: In this matter I believe the oba of Benin more.. Why ? Because the Benin kingdom and its obas have the longest recorded history in Nigeria and they also had one of the most formal setting before the advent of the white men in Nigeria.. their history is well documented and not just mere say.. I believe the oba is speaking from a factual point of view than all this emotional hearsay people online.. 9 Likes 1 Share |

In the discourse on the Bini versus Yoruba dynamics in Lagos, it becomes apparent that the numerical superiority of the Yorubas tends to exert dominance over the smaller Bini community. Yet, amid this demographic reality, a nuanced acknowledgment emerges โ an iota of truth lies in the cultural contributions of the Binis, as reflected in linguistic nuances and place names. Upon closer inspection, historical vestiges reveal Lagos towns bearing Bini names, challenging the assumption that everything is inherently Yoruba. The very title of "Oba" itself, often deemed quintessentially Yoruba, traces its origins to the Bini culture. This revelation underscores a complexity that defies simplistic categorizations. However, geographical realities persist, with Lagos firmly situated in the South-West, historically recognized as Yoruba territory. The notion of ceding land based on historical connections clashes with the fundamental principle of territorial sovereignty. It echoes parallels of an Igbo claim to Equatorial Guinea, emphasizing the impracticality of asserting ownership without tangible boundaries. Drawing a parallel to the Black American experience in claiming ownership of America, the conclusion surfaces โ the owner of the land remains the owner, akin to the immutable nature of citizenship. This prompts contemplation on the concept of naturalization, advocating a shift from the right of blood to the right of the soil in the Nigerian context. In the intricate tapestry of Lagos's identity, acknowledging historical contributions while respecting territorial boundaries becomes pivotal. The discourse urges a reevaluation of citizenship paradigms, inviting a nuanced perspective that accommodates both historical legacies and contemporary realities. 5 Likes |

it's so pitiful and pathetic that every 3 to 4 years everybody will gather and be fighting over the same patch of land. The same place that has been designated One of the dirtiest cities in the world and recently the worst traffic in the world. we are so backwards and damned that everyone wants Lagos. They want ownership not because they love it so much, but because when they look back it's still better than their decrepit hooverville. if only naija was better.

In the vibrant tapestry of Lagos, a discourse often arises regarding its identity, particularly concerning who can rightfully claim it as their "home State." The notion that Lagos exclusively belongs to the Yorubas is challenged by those who assert that the city transcends tribal affiliations. Seyi Law, a comedian not born in Lagos, serves as a case in point. The argument posits that his Lagosian identity is no more profound than that of other Nigerians who have made the bustling metropolis their home. This perspective extends to individuals like Chinedu or Musa, who, despite migrating to Lagos and investing a significant portion of their lives there, are perceived on equal footing with Seyi Law. Crucially, the narrative contends that the issue is not one of tribal allegiance but rather a question of statehood. An exasperated observer laments instances where Yoruba individuals, not originally from Lagos but perhaps from Osun State, engage in misguided territorial disputes, overlooking the fact that Lagos belongs to Lagosians, not a specific tribe. The discourse delves into historical roots, acknowledging the custodianship of the Oba of Benin, who, as a royal leader, holds sway over the historical narrative. The etymology of the name "EKO," asserted to be of Benin origin, juxtaposed with the Portuguese-derived "Lagos," underscores the historical complexity of the city's nomenclature. The absence of a Yoruba word for Lagos adds a layer of ambiguity, prompting reflections on land ownership. The argument suggests that if "Eko" is indeed a Benin word, it implies a historical period where the Benin people laid claim to Lagos, akin to the Portuguese who named it 'Lagos.' In the contemporary context, the narrative pivots to the inclusivity of Lagos, emphasizing that it now belongs to all. The assertion that most estates, notably the Lekki Peninsula, were predominantly built and developed by Igbo-speaking communities underscores the cosmopolitan nature of Lagos. Despite a personal history and affinity for Lagos, I have an aversion to residing in the city due to the perceived constraints akin to an "open air prison." The metaphor of Lagosians as both warders and prisoners within the confines of their own creation, coupled with the inescapable congestion symbolized by "crazy traffic," paints a poignant picture of the challenges faced in the city. 1 Like |

@MakeWeTalk , olodo, distorter of history and a spinner of truth , which tribes made Lagos wealthy? If anything, Lagos impacted the tribes and nations that sought economic refuge in it, not the other way round. It's very clear, u don't have a sense of history or, well , maybe u have a self~distorted one. The Portuguese first came to Lagos in 1472, long before these parasitic tribes, who unabashedly lay claim to Lagos, ever dreamt of making the voyage. They named it LAGOS DE KURAMO because of the many lagoons they saw. 2 Likes |

Whoever is too lazy to research history should STFU. There was mainland Yoruba land that spanned current SW Nigeria, Kwara, parts of Kogi, most of Benin Republic and parts of Togo. Lagos island (isale eko) which was first named internationally by portuguese and later explored by the English is 5-10% of current Lagos. This part was initially inhabited by very few wandering Yorubas from the mainland. Most of This parts was sacred uninhabited land used to worship OLOKUN and to do some sacrifices from Yoruba mainalanders. When the FREED SLAVES that still thIer Yoruba heritage requested to come back yo Africa , they were dumped on LAGOS ISLAND. When mainlanders invaded them, they requested Benin king to help them. This king from the last child of Odudwa who felt marginalized, sent warriors who conquered land for the helpless islanders. Then they set up an outpost called Eko. But when the rest of Yorubaland decided to challenge this, the Benin monarchy decided to relinquish total authority, but demand homage from the EKO (lagos island) king. Until this was stopped much later. This was the history! 3 Likes |

This is why Nigeria will never move forward... Have you seen people of Wales and Scott land dragging who found or formed England?? Or people from 2 states in Canada dragging about who founded Ontario or otawwa ![]() We no dey drag states wen get the most engineers... We no dey drag the state wen get the most investors or educationists... Na who form Lagos we dey drag.... May God heal the minds of Nigerians... If a youth can be dragging between who formed Lagos between the Yorubas and Benins...... If such a youth becomes a leader tomorrow, what will he bring to the table apart from tribalism and backwardness ![]() Before our leaders can be good... Our young ones need to be good first... Na who good today as a small pikin go good tomorrow as big person.... That being said.... The OP dey mad for asking such a useless question that's of no relevance to this country in its current state. 3 Likes |

seunmsg:Ashipa that was first Oba of Lagos isn't a Benin man sef. He was a Yorubaman of Awori clan. So this hullabaloo of Benins should stop. They should be ashamed the pattern of Lagos is Yoruba in all spheres and had little or no Benin identity. Lastly, this present Oba of Benin and all past were Yoruba boys so what's the fuss? Oranmiyan was first Oba of Benin. They can't erase him from their history. Ask any Benin man, including their king to give full meaning of Oba. The three letters, syllables all had deep meanings that Benin can't phantom and those that knew it kept quiet cos it ll step on ego of Benins 7 Likes 2 Shares |

Lagos state is a state in Nigeria. The indigenous people ( inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times ) in Lagos are the Yoruba. 1 Like |

Tzar:Everything you wrote here is trash because the word yoruba did not exist then. Yoruba was a creation of a popular yoruba historian. The earliest point of your history is ife and can be dated to the 16th century. The bini have been trading with the Portuguese since the 12th century and lagos was a port of trade for the bini. Bini is far older than ife. Meaning they are your fathers. 6 Likes |
