I have watched and read about the attacks you referenced above some time ago. It was clearly a failure on the part of Israel intelligence as they had wanted lure America into the war by blaming Egypt for the attack. I respected the IDF for acknolwedging this error on their part and apologizing to the United States. This was because in the early days of Israel independence and wars--the United States did not Israel militarily. They even had a weapons blockade on the Middle East. To fight the Arabs, Israel had to source a lot of its weapons from the former Czechoslovakia! While Russia amply supplied the Arabs with weapons. Even so, little Israel with no US defeated all the Arab nations. Eventually, US policy towards Israel will change even as Russia and China supplied the Arab countries a lot of tech and militray aid.

Backtracking a bit towards a historical context....

Muslims who took over areas under the control of the earlier defeated Greek Byzantine Empire were mostly focused on the larger population centers....Damascus, Constantinople etc., and the place called Israel was left as an abandoned backwater with a few overtaxed Jewish and Christian setllers and pilgrims. Twain witnessed this firsthand...NO SIZEABLE ARAB POPULATION DESIRED TO LIVE THERE! The transformation of the entire area from a barren unproductive wasteland to a green, well watered, tech center with a first world economy is a transformation that took place under the Jews since 1948.
