Jman06:
From my understanding, OSU or OHU or whatever is just a term coined by conmen of yesteryears to take advantage of their fellow humans whose only crime was that they migrated to a land later than others.
The practice is a clear reflection of how selfish and inhuman the black men of those days were.
In those days, people were migrating from one area to another until they found a liveable land to occupy. Once they settled on a land, any other person coming after them is termed an "OSU". Imagine a situation where aboriginal Americans describe immigrants as outcasts!
In some places, especially in Enugu state, the situation is even such that kinsmen who migrated from one place to another also segregated their kinsmen coming behind them and describe them as OSU or Ohu or whatever that is why they bear the same surname. That is why if you trace the origin of some people who are seen as OHUs in one village, you'll discover that same people belong to the so called AMADUs in another village. It is just the greediness and selfishness of humans at play, it has nothing to do with worship of any gods like some people claim.
Lies..... Even though I'm not Igbo, I know OSU is deeper than that

Re: My Mum Is Strongly Rejecting The Girl I Want To Marry by Nobody: 7:26pm On Aug 20, 2023 |
First of all, what's OSU?
Blaze14k:
I would like to use this opportunity to seek guidance based on the issue I have on ground. I believe it's igbos especially elderly person who is in a better position to give me a reasonable explanation. I told my mum my girlfriend is from ohafia, abia state and she instantly told me I can't get married to her. Her reason is because people from ohafia, arochukwu, izombe, and few other places in abia state are regarded as OSU. I complained to other of my family but they also rejected her.
I have made some research personally and found out people from other part of igboland marry from those places. Now my question is why are they strongly rejecting her cos it doesn't make sense to call everybody from different local government in abia state OSU.
I've made more research on the girls family and found out they are king makers and her father belongs to eze's cabinet.
Her father and mine are no longer alive. They both have a traditional title and belong to eze's cabinet too. Please I need your advice cos I really want marry this girl. I also know that people encounter alot of difficulties when they want to get married. So I need a clarification from someone who has extensive knowledge on igbo tradition. Thank you

What do you suggest.. should I ignore them and marry her. Who will attend the wedding and how do you I will cope with my family after that? I refuse to accept what they are saying cos it doesn't make sense to me.

Different parts of Igboland have their different interpretation of what their own "osu" or whatever entails. What I described is what basically applies to Enugu.
I think those who think they can take advantage of that practice politically are the ones roping everyone as "OSU". They forget that politics doesn't work that way in a democracy as there's no permanent enemy nor friend in politics but permanent interests, and that if the interests align, people will play politics together regardless of the caste system.

Persephone1: While this looks very pleasing to read, I won't advice a lady to get married into a family she's not wanted. Except of course the husband wants to cut ties and she won't have to deal with inlaws ever (which is very unrealistic and unreasonable).
Too much stress for nothing.
Still it's not advisable because the war will never end

You have done well with the little investigations you have done to be sure that she is not an Osu
Even non Osu from their place don't marry Osu, I don't want to know their reasons
But since you are very sure of your stand
I think you will be ready to sponsor anyone that will go for secret investigations from your family to her family
Is called Iju Ajuju Nwanyi
When the investigator goes and come back, the whole family will listen to his findings at a seating, including your woman
So advice your family to nominate an uncle that will do that
He may have to Lodge incase it's night depending on when he took of
If you really love her let this be one of the sacrifices you are making for her
Meanwhile she must not be aware of the findings
But will be aware of the family result announcement
Good luck

If you love this girl as you claim, hold on, let time sort your family out. Pretend to your people that you are no longer interested in getting married, enjoy your life and watch your family's reaction after 6 months. This is a problem you should handle with tact, because if your mother and wife are at war, you will be the battle ground. This is your 1st test, I will wish a straight A on this course.

Don't play with it whenever ur parents bring up issues like this'' many of them are talking from experience''
What experience? Please enlighten me on the dangers of this tribal discrimination. What happens if a non osu marries an osu.
