In Nigeria, we generally use the '#' sign to indicate Naira while the '$' is used for the dollar.

Therefore by '#50k", I meant I have invested FIFTY THOUSAND NAIRA and not fifty thousand dollars.

The symbols exist for a reason na. Many Nigerians have adopted the hash symbol as the primary representative of Naira.
