Avoid office politics at all costs."
I DISAGREE - that advice will kill your career.
You need to play office politics to succeed ❗❗

In 2015, a senior leader taught me how to 'play' the game when I was transferred to a leadership job in a new country.

- He told me who to befriend in the corporate hierarchy.
- He took me through their individual agendas.
- He gave me the best approach for each person.

When I played the game, my career skyrocketed
When I didn’t play it, it cost me my career ❌

Here are 4 ways to ‘play the game’.

1️⃣ Understand the culture and hierarchy.

Ignorance is NOT bliss. If you want to be recognised or need for your projects, you need to know who the decision-makers are and get clear on their agenda.

2️⃣ Demonstrate your value.

By working hard and helping others, you’ll earn respect. Speak up in meetings, share ideas and make everyone feel included - the corporate game can be cutthroat - don't be seen as docile.

3️⃣ Learn soft skills.

Hard skills are trained and measurable. Soft skills are intangible but will help you understand, empathise and connect with people on deeper levels. If you need coaching on this, invest in it!

4️⃣ Spread positive energy.

If you make people feel good and ooze positivity, people will want you on their team and you'll win more opportunities. Avoid being the pessimist. Offer solutions, don't just highlight problems.

Office politics is like a game of chess ♟️

Play it well and you win. Ignore it and you lose.

Office politics is like a game of chess ♟️

Play it well and you win. Ignore it and you lose.

This is the wisdom of the world. It can work (and also backfire) for overly ambitious people.

The best thing is to avoid power play. Do your best on the job. Be seen doing your job diligently and leave the rest.

Sometimes it is best to avoid office politics. The backbiting, backstabbing, gossiping and other forms of treacherous behaviour involved in it can darken one's soul and lead you away from God.

Keep yourself from evil!

I tend to a avoid undue attention and unnecessary popularity in the office...but we all need a bit of the activities, attitudes and behaviors that will give us an advantage within our workplace. In other words, office politics is necessary for survival if played subtly and sensibly

Well said.

I've seen so called office politics at play where the least qualified personnel is promoted because he plays office politics.

Life is beyond the office. Like the poster above me says, office politics often generate bad blood. People have been beaten up because of this and some even lost their life.

Do your job diligently. Keep a cordial relationship with everyone including your boss. Don't try to get ahead of others by going to wash his car or running errands for your boss' wife.

Spot on. But you have to play it with wisdom. Avoid unnecessary gossips but always be in the know of what is happening.

Ignoring office politics may not cost you your job but you may not progress or be promoted faster.

Speak at meetings but be careful what you say, one careless statement can cost you your job. Some bosses don't forget and they don't forgive.

Office politics is a double edged sword that doesn't know the owner.

In my opinion it's best to avoid it

Be good at what you do and be always ready to help others

You qualities and attitude will speak for you at the appropriate time, and of course be prayerful

Office politics most times = ass kissing...
Ass kissing can take you to a point but not to the top...
Focus on always bringing your A game to the table - doing your job exceptionally well...

I didn't read the write-up, but my submission is that, embrace office politics.

It is also important to state that, you don't need to backbite, gossip, malign or blackmail your colleagues in name of office politics.

Do your job well let your work speak for you. Office politics is seasonal because your group may be out of power over a mishap and it will ruboff on you as a beneficiary of that group. Best is do your job and manage whatever comes your way.

Well, before your group/clique gets out of power you should have already seen it and strategized on how to move to the new group in power. That way you stay afloat and on top of the game cool

From experience, I will advise you to play office politics But watch out to be sure you're in the right team. Any team that has the HR, your HOD and the manager is the best to . Have you wondered why some people are getting promotion upon promotion and some others are stuck at a point even though they are working? That's where the politics come to play. Do not get involved if it has occultic tendencies.
