Professor Ibrahim Garba, and Ibrahim Shehu Usman, former Vice Chancellor and Bursar respectively of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria were arraigned before Justice A.A Bello of the Kaduna State High Court on an eight count charge bordering on theft and money laundering to the tune of over N1billion, IGBERETV reports.

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Thursday, January 12, 2023 arraigned the two men following months of discreet investigation triggered by a petition accusing the duo of diverting monies meant for the renovation of the popular Kongo Conference Hotel, Zaria.

The investigation established that over one billion Naira was allegedly stolen from different s of the institution by the defendants and diverted into their private s.

Count one of the charge reads, “that you, Prof. Ibrahim Garba and Ibrahim Shehu Usman, sometimes in December, 2013, whilst the Vice Chancellor and Bursar of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria respectively, in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court conspired amongst yourselves to use the aggregate sum of N998,000,000.00 (Nine Hundred and Ninety Eight Million Naira), property of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria”.

Another count reads, “that you, Prof. Ibrahim Garba and Ibrahim Shehu Usman, between 2015 and 2016 in Kaduna, whilst the Vice Chancellor and Bursar of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria respectively, with dominion over the sum of aggregate sum of N173,428,020.00 (One Hundred and Seventy Three Million, Four Hundred and Twenty Eight Thousand, Twenty Naira), committed Criminal Breach of Trust in respect of the said sum through USIG NIGERIA LIMITED No. 1402548014, domiciled in First City Monument Bank Plc”.

They pleaded ‘not guilty’ when the charges were read to them.

Based on their plea, the prosecuting counsel, N. Salele and M.U Gadaka urged the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial, while the defence counsel M.S Kati asked the court to release his clients on bail.

Justice Bello granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N10 million each and a surety in like sum who must own a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court.

They are also to deposit their international ports with the registrar of the court. The case has been adjourned till March 15 and 16, 2023 for trial.

Just look at their remorsful faces

I believe there is hope for us yet as a nation. Although, cynical as it might paint me, I cannot but wonder what became of the findings by EFCC of many other curruption cases and where all the trillions supposedly recalled disappeared to.

I might be far behind in my update but I don't recall the money EFCC/IC recovered been put to any positive use today, if not diverted for fattening other people's already obessed bank s, sponsoring elections, campaigns and foreign s.

But what has not ceased to surprise me is the relative ease with which these accused VC, Bursar and others will be able to secure bail if given to them, which of course bail is certain. Also the court conspiracy smacks of something like the "big boys money exchanging hands" connections at work making the courts also currupt.

People keep complaining about the government as if they are the only corrupt people in the country.

The average Nigerian citizen is extremely corrupt. The society is completely rotten from top to bottom.

Corruption pervades everywhere - in schools, offices, churches and places of religious worship etc.

Even the Sharia law they practice will never deter them from criminality. So guess the zombies of this government can see that corruption cuts across every strata you want to assess it from?

I still blame the government.
In the western world , they have a very strict law and punishment for tax evaders. If such laws are not in place , people will definitely evade paying taxes.

No human is good by default. The government must lead by example.
This crooked ex VC will get at most a slap on the wrist.
The government must hold us all to when when commit crimes, that is the only way to tame corruption.
