If you were talking about the Soviet union...then yes, you could go to jail for possesing or even teaching from the bible (outside state sanction, and teaching the bible to kids was forbidden). The USSR was an atheist state, and state atheism was propagated at schools and institutions. (as V.I Lenin said...a true communist would always promote atheism and combat religion).

Today's russia? DEPENDS....while christianity(orthodox, catholic, and several protestant denominations eg Baptists and Lutherans), islam , judaisim and buddhisim are recognised....some sects (eg Jehovah's witnesses) are not, as well as some other religious bodies (eg scientology, i think), and organisations like the Salvation army.....and that is partly because they may receive funding from abroad.. Bibles are now freely available in Russia. Putin is himself an Orthodox Christian (has been seen on TV at an orthodox ceremony crossing himself....something a soviet leader won't be caught dead doing).

I am talking about right now. Many people are imprisoned for simply talking about the Christian God. Nope, not true...except for JW's and some other sects. For most christians, including evangelicals...not true.
