I want to go into programming (Python or UX/UI design) but I'm still contemplating if one can master it through YouTube video and other sources..

Sincerely most experts I know, learnt it all on their own. I'm not excluded.

We all have different things motivating us. But, it isn't easy.

OP, please and please ignore this comment because it's just full of negativity and discouragement. The best guys in field of IT today are basically self-taught programmers . In fact, a whole bunch of them never saw the four-walls of an algorithm class, talk more of a bootcamp but yet they've been able to build themselves and get amazing job offers in Silicon valley.

So in summary , the secret to being a successful programmer is just determination and practice. That's all

Having basic knowledge of a thing and decided to go on YouTube to sharpen up is different from someone without basic knowledge at all.

Op look for any good IT school around you and enrol,you can use YouTube to further teach yourself.

Oga, I did not arrive at this ; it is a fact you can for yourself if you'd take the time and do a bit of digging . Many of the celebrated programmers like Angela Yu and co today never saw a bootcamp...infact they didn't even have a computer degree yet they are web instructors on Udemy .

The ideology is that you learn by doing, by copying, by following along.

You are not going to feel confident if you do not implement something practically that you learned via an online course. We humans, learn best by doing it.

Yes you can learn through someone but the process would be longer. Everyone needs a guide for faster movement. Get a mentor and experience radio growth. Though I learnt Java, Python and JavaScript on my own but it took me a long time.

Bros, in life there's no easy way out; you just have to work and figure things out on your own.

When I started my coding journey , I ed someone to mentor me and he told me to bring 60k on a monthly basis . At that time I had lost my job , and was facing serious financial pressure on every side . Yet this chap wanted 60k from me on a monthly basis. Na so I carry my laptop enter enter Javanian thread for Nairaland.com, I then mixed it with Freecodecamp.com and started from there . And to God be the glory, i can now I can build projects on my own .


So anybody telling you that "you need a mentor " is indirectly demanding money from you . And I believe you don't have money.

And if you think about it ,you can use less than 60k to the necessary materials and videos needed to become a badass programmer

You're right . Even my some of my programming friends that studied computer science in school all learnt what they know by themselves. No lecturer or course outline gave them a clear pathway.

The idea of "self taught" is a misnomer. There's no such thing as "self taught". Somebody actually is teaching you, albeit not physically but rather through videos, books, docs etc. Maybe it should be properly called "unofficial taught"......

Go to a bootcamp.
And for your info, a majority of devs at FAANG and other Silicon Valley coys are computer science grads.

I totally agree with you! I find it funny people run around saying they are "self-taught". How many people knew algorithm by themselves?

Completely disagree! Have you mentored people before? A whole bunch of rubbish out there mentoring. You schedule an appointment with the mentee, doesn't turn up and comes days later with a flimsy excuse. If he was paying for that time he would turn up no matter what

I don't come come from an IT background, I've taught myself programming since 2019, and now I can confidently apply for jobs.

Stop spreading your negative energy to others

I'm self-taught and currently working for one of the tech giants.

so it is possible tho i wouldn't advice it.
It takes a lot of resilience, self discipline and determination .
