The Senate, Tuesday, ed two bills seeking to establish two federal universities in Ekiti and Nasarawa states.

The bills are Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences Iyin, Ekiti State (Establishment) Bill, 2021, and Federal University Lafia Teaching Hospital (Establishment) Bill, 2021.

Both bills are separately sponsored by Senators Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), and Tanko Al-Makura (APC,
Nasarawa South).

The age of both bills followed the presentation and consideration of two separate reports by the Committee on
Health (Secondary and Tertiary).

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Yahaya Oloriegbe (APC, Kwara Central), in his presentation, said the bill to establish the Federal University of Lafia Teaching Hospital was “necessitated as a result of the precarious health conditions faced by resident.”

According to him, the bill to establish the Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences Iyin, Ekiti State, seeks to promote and emphasize teaching, research and extension of knowledge in the field of medicine and environmental sciences.

In a related development, the Senate on Wednesday ed a third bill to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards) Act.

The bill’s age by the upper chamber followed consideration of a report by the Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary).

Senator Oloriegbe in his presentation explained that the amendment bill seeks to amend the First Schedule to the
Principal Act to include the University Teaching Hospital, Lafia and Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital.

In a related development, a bill seeking to establish the Federal College of Education, Kaiama, Kwara State, scaled second reading during plenary.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar (APC, Kwara North).

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, after the bill was considered, referred it to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

The Committee which is chaired Senator Ahmad Baba Kaita ( APC Katsina North) , was given four weeks to report back to the upper chamber.

All in the name of scoring political point for next election.

Politicians are the greatest enemies of this country.

How on earth would a sane human being embark on a project he knows the state is bureaucratically handicapped to financed.

Another glorified secondary school university loading.

Nonsense

I don't think this is a good strategy for higher education. Nigeria needs more universities to service the next generations, however they need to be private efforts at zero cost to govt revenue. If the idea is to always build more universities to gulp ission seekers who grow by 200,000 seekers almost every year then we simply can't build fast enough.

The private universities are picking up rapidly. Focus on enabling the highly capitalized one which can increase GDP spending on research. But more importantly can attain sustainability which most public varsities can't at the moment.

More universities? Where are the jobs? Where are lecturers and University staff salaries?

More Universities is definitely not Nigeria's problem now, can you pay the staff well, I mean livable wage or will they also be going on ASUU strike like others?
Can the students find jobs in their fields upon graduation?

When will we stop decieving ourselves in the contraption called Nigeria? When? We are too old to be running around in circle this country is now an elder we should be doing better by now

Universities with no common tooth pick factory.
I am yet to hear any of our lawmakers sponsoring a bill to reduce the birth rate to like maximum of three children per woman.

The graph below is the population growth between Britain and Nigeria from 1900s to 2021.
The population as at 1911 was about 44million
While that of Nigeria then was about 16million
100years down the line, Britain is about 60million
While Nigeria is over 200million.
Imagine the gap of 140million?
And you are expecting the government to perform magic.
And you are expecting things to get better very soon.
I'm not trying to justify corruption and malistration in the government.
But, this is a simple Economics.
Most countries with higher standards of living, higher per capital income among their citizens have lower population.
We need to put all hands on deck and stabilise the over bloating population.
We can't continue to be giving birth like rat and expect things to get better in the future.
The resources are scarce.
The poverty rate is alarming.
People are just pretending and packaging.
Help yourself.
Help your family
Help this country
Help your government.
Save our planet.

This is a wrong report!
There are no new Universities established but law was enacted for the Establishment of medical schools for the existing Federal Universities in those two places.

It's bad these people still see higher institutions as a means of developing their hometown, why not think of industries to provide employment and economic activities.

No not that way bro, it doesnt work like that. This is a good development for Ekiti state and Southwest region. If you happy with us us in celebration.

Eyah they give us more and more. Government establishments are beter sited where they will be safe and be appreciated. Because if sited somewhere else now, people whom education is not in their culture or blood strain will go and distrupt student while writing exams. They can only push cocaine, wander from one town to another, hate other people's achievement, and chest beating. Thats what they are good at.
